The bit about Jojo surprised me though, didn't expect jojo to be the influence for kimetsu.
Though to clarify, it's what Katayama thinks Kimetsu was inspired by. But people have had Hamon and Dio in mind for a while now.
Also, Akaza's ability is reminiscent of a Stand from Part 6, which could just be coincidence.

That's pretty informative and damn, what a story actually... To go from planning to quit to having the biggest series in recent memory in the span of just a few years. Also didn't think they considered kimetsu a success right from the very start, good to know.

There are plenty of Jojos reference, specially with Douma haha.

Oh yea don't get me wrong there are references, it's just that kimetsu doesn't feel very jojo-esque to me I guess

Have to say, a part of me is a little shocked David didn't do better than it did. Anyone have an idea as to why the JP audience didn't take to it?
Because David's design is ass

Isn't China second biggest market for anime after Japan? I'm not big expert about anime in China so far as I know Bilibili is popular service with mostly younger users (teen, young adult). Dunno about how much revenue came from China/Bilibili but it's nothing to celebrated.
The biggest market after japan is france

I should have clarified like someone else did after me.
Obviously a mega seller like One Piece, Kimetsu, and series like MHA and Haikyuu have tons of people who aren’t reading the magazine that are buying the manga.
And for a series that’s like 10 volumes in it makes sense that non magazine readers are buying it.

But assuming Yozakura and Mitama well we’ll, they’ll likely only do like 20K at most.
I can’t see how Jump Shuiesha would possibly know that those sales all came from ppl who don’t buy the magazine.
Oh. Okay I actually agree with you. I doubt Maitama or Yozakura have a lot if not any readers from outside WSJ. My point was technically for when a manga gets exposure via some other means that isnt the main magazine itself like an anime or drama etc etc.

The editor didnt really say that the sales before any such boosts or exposure are from a lot of people who dont read the magazine right?
Unless a series blows up in popularity, I doubt anyone from outside the magazine reads it.

Nakano said that it's more because of the rise of digital. A lot of it can be chalked up to word of mouth from people who do follow the mags.

Yeah Yaiba cover magazines are kinda bland but i wonder if this one isn't a reference for the first cover since is the 4th and supposedly last anniversary, also it does resemble like a "then and now" type of illustration.

Man... weird to think that Kimetsu launched when AssClass and Nisekoi were still in the magazine, those were two of the first Jump titles that I got into. Time flies.

but for there to be word of mouth that convinces someone to go buy a manga day 1 that would mean generally positive reception anyway right? Yozakura and Mitama started back in August so even if the first month was positive and it started slipping would anyone remember a series they heard good things about back in September, never mind still buy after realizing they'd heard nothing about it for 4 months?

I have no idea. I'm just going off what Nakano himself has said. And who am I to disagree with the guy in charge?

Doubt this applies to series that are new like Mitama and Yozakura. Probably a generalized statement since at any given time in WSJ, a lot of the well established series have / had anime or some kind of exposure and therefore people from outside WSJ would've picked it up by buying the volumes.

I guess its pointless to keep talking about this since we'll never know until Nakano himself specifically says it.

BTW, being catching up with Mitama, and boy now I can see why everybody loves it, it quite comfy for a comedy series, it really gets better with each chapter
I agree. I think what got people attention is how strong the continuity has been thus far. Every chapter feels like it genuinely adds something, and for a gag manga the series has already set up a lot that be delved into.

Man, I wish Gotouge stepped up their cover game because KNY's covers are historically bland.

So do you think Zipman and Agravity Boys will have the same kind of result as Mitama and Yozakura ? (for sales)
Probably just one of them.

Any chance of an early ToC today with cover dropping early? (or at least i think this is earlier than usual)

Agravity looks like it'll do well from the jp response to it on twitter. Zipman doesn't look as promising imo.
I mean if we can learn from Yozakura (at least looking at the first day on Shoseki), is that twitter response isn't always reliable.

Damn I really wish they showed up in Oricon so we could see the numbers, I'm dying to see them.

On a side note, I wonder how 'Fafner' sounds in Japanese. It's already hard to pronounce in English. Where did they even get... wait, was it supposed to be Fafnir? That's not a very happy reference.
It's written as "ファフナ", so basically you read like a British person would, kinda.

I just noticed that all volumes of ACT-AGE are in the 2/4 Shoseki BEST500! I assume that’s because of Akimoto’s recommendation? For reference:

3. Volume 10
145. Volume 9
256. Volume 2
257. Volume 1
285. Volume 8
362. Volume 3
429. Volume 7
431. Volume 6
480. Volume 4
500. Volume 5
This happens to AA when it releases a volume, usually.

Hm, I wonder if the reason is the MHA issue.

Oh, that's nice! Are these the numbers all volumes usually do upon a new release, or did the Akimoto recommendation boost the backlog in any way?

By the way, does anyone know what series this is? I don't own any WNL volumes so I can't cross-check the staff page with new manga debuts.

So is the magazine going to come out earlier than usual this week? Not exactly sure what’s going on.

They are slightly better this time, but not by much.

#179 Act-age 7
#294 Act-age 1
#337 Act-age 3
#338 Act-age 2
#353 Act-age 4
#372 Act-age 6
#375 Act-age 5

#152 Act-age 8
#238 Act-age 1
#269 Act-age 2
#341 Act-age 7
#360 Act-age 6
#386 Act-age 3
#452 Act-age 5

It would come out later, not sooner, if that were the case.
Oh yeah, I mixed up the dates lol. My bad.
