Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

19. ZIPMAN!! 11 - 0 Votes
Big F for Shibata. I was really excited to see his return to the magazine but this portrays really well how most people (me included) are feeling about the manga now...

Chiyoko reigns supreme and is the superior actress.

Funny as you can also easily say that it's lazy as hell to call OP's art as just being clustered when there's depth to it. It's not perfect but it captures the chaotic/expansive nature of the New World.

I do agree to an extent as I miss his spreads like Zoro's shishi sonson against Mr.1...
It's both lazy to add nothing (lmao bleach xd), and add too much. Also you touched another grudge I have post timeskip: "new" world is just old world with higher bounties number and not new in any other sense at all.

I think you mean he rarely goes beyond the frames of the panels?
He probably means to say Oda rarely experiments with panel shapes or layouts, sticking just to his usual sequences with plain squares and rectangles rather than doing creative panel layouts or sequences much.

Feels good to see Mashle and Mitama being so loved here, they are really enjoyable week after week. AA topping the poll is a testament to its status as one of the best running series in the magazine. Also, really amusing to see Yozakura that high when it was a punching bag for so long. GOWT, AG and Zipman haven't found their footing yet it seems.

Really do feel pretty bad for Shibata. It takes five years for him to get another go-around, only to from the looks of it bomb even harder. Dunno if I'd call him a "bad" mangaka, but it's clear he doesn't have what it takes to solidify himself.

Yup. OP's panels feel so expository, there's so rarely an emotional impact to them.

I think Zipman has more just fallen off the side of the cliff.

An interesting detail, the top 7 is basically the same thing adding or not the extra votes/points, the only difference is that Mashle and Dr. Stone swapped positions and that the total number of votes increased a LOT with the extra votes added taking in count the positions you guys ranked, so basically the second poll hold a lot of weight in the results depending in how users rank the chapters, so if you want to have more impact in the results, vote in the second poll too!

Edit: The number of excluded voters in the notes is about the first poll.

Kinda feel bad for Zipman because in this two last polls that the series had 0 votes i had to exclude the only vote it got because the user still not have enough comments (20something comments, user-san just comment more so your vote will count!)

Wait, how did Act-Age get 64 votes and One Piece 63 if there were only 62 voters?
The two polls were combined.

People sometimes cite Horikoshi as an example of a flop author not giving up after 2 failures and getting a hit at last, but his first series, Oumagadoki Zoo, did get 5 volumes in a pretty competitive wsj era. The second series might have been a total failure but he started out showing promise.

Shibata however started with an instantly cancelled flop, and Zipman appears to be going to be the same way which isn't a good sign. Has there been a creator who's come back with success after two total flops before?

Anyone know what numbers Hungry Joker did? Curious if I can test something.

I also wonder if some of those almost-successes would've ended up as long runners had there been as much empty space in the magazine as there is now. Like maybe we'd have Oumagadoki zoo, St@rs, Soul Catcher(s), etc anime to look back on if all the big manga didn't push them out.

Personally, I think it's pointless to dwell on what-ifs, especially this kind where we're asking if a work of fiction would've preformed better in a different environment. There's simply too many factors to consider to where a meaningful point can be made.

Soul Catcher(S) would totally survive if it was published now, sales were at the same level of Chainsaw Man:

the problem is you have to account for time, who knows how this translates to now in sales, numbers were way bigger then, and different audiences

Has there been a creator who's come back with success after two total flops before?
These two probably don't meet the criteria exactly, but:

- Tetsuya Saruwatari had two very short WSJ series (I think for the latter he was only doing the art), but then found success in Business Jump (Riki-Oh, artist only) and WYJ (Tough), among other series.

- Before Hikaru, Obata had Cyborg Grandpa G (4 volumes, and under a pen name), Majin Bōkentan Lamp Lamp (3 volumes, artist only), Rikito Densetsu -Oni wo Tsugu Mono- (3 volumes, artist only, and I think this one may have been intended to be short, but I'm not sure), and Karakurizōshi Ayatsuri Sakon (4 volumes, artist only).

Like I said with Fukuda after Taisei ended, maybe Shibata should try a series with Jump+ and see if he can get something going there before using up his final strike (presumably).

Yes but the thing is, the series at the time already had some impressive sales and dedicate fanbase despite the not much good toc rankings, it was quite popular between fujoshis, and the popularity poll received over 35k votes despite already being at JumpNEXT at the time:

We don't know how would really do today but in the current Jump with "not so typical Jump" series being popular i think Soul Catcher(S) would fit and also get attention of the female readers like at that time, specially with the lack of fujobait new series.

Hn, interesting. Anyone know where the author is?
He started a detective series on Saikyo Jump in 2018 but i think already ended

Yup. all quantitative comparison with the past are relative after all.

I think that page has very bad panelling and BNHA has the worst panelling of the current established series.
Chainsawman has great, movie-style panelling. Fujimoto is very playful once in a while as well.
JJK has great, action manga-style panelling.
Haikyuu is amazing as well.
And Togashi is still king but atm Kimetsu has the best panelling in Jump, it has perfected "giving attention to what matters". Since movies and manga are different mediums, completely drawing manga through movie shots can't leverage all of manga's potential. Kimetsu is making full use of the manga medium's potential.
And no, having a devil hand flick from outside a panel or having the back of a door create the panelling doesn't make the panelling instantly great - although Fujimoto has always delivered when he is experimenting.
Btw the BNHA example above is how a "cool idea" - essentially a novelty, a knickknack - can be terrible in execution. Luckily Fujimoto has never gone overboard without reason.

If this adds any merit to my points, I've drawn around 300 manga pages with constantly improving my panelling and composition in mind ofc, and been actively studying panelling for a year or so.
I don't know if I would go as far as to say Gotouge is the best panelist in jump rn, but Gotouge definitely has great paneling that goes underappreciated because of her artstyle.

The Death Note one-shot reached 1 000 000 views on M+. Even One Piece only does 250k in a good week.

So does that mean that people who voted in both polls got their votes counted double?
If not, which one was counted?

I would have liked to see the difference between both methods...
