I have noticed that there's a lot of criticism against Oden after the flashback, but I don't get it.

Oden is role in the story is very similar to Tom, Ace or Corazón. He had a tragic death, and set the plot forward.

Maybe it's because his silhouette was shown a few too many times. Or maybe it's because he was a member of the Roger Pirates. God forbid anything related to Roger or Raftel is not the most epic story ever written, and instead Oden just fulfilled his already established role in the story.

We already knew everything about Oden, except for the details. We knew he sailed with Whitebeard and Roger, we knew he could fight a Yonko, we knew he was fooled by Orochi, we knew how he died.

Is it because he was too kind and humiliated himself? That's not new in One Piece, like when Shanks let Higuma get the best of him in the first chapter.

Is it because Oden choose not to fight Kaido from the beginning? It would put the population of Wano in danger, and he wasn't sure if he could win.

Much of the criticism I see is not much a problem with Oden character, but Kaido. He barely did anything in the flashback. He had an off-panel battle with Oden, was sliced, but won with Higurashi help. He awkwardly played with Oden inside the barrier. He executed Oden with just a handgun. Even after the flashback is over, Kaido looks like Orochi's bodyguard or drinking buddy.

Its not difficult. Oden was portrait as a major badass character, whorewars... clash with WB was on WBs Ship + Rogers. Even knew what the damn one piece thing is.

So far his flashback was quite good and interesting, the problem came with the return to wano.

His powerlevel was so high, that he needed to dumb down immensly, that the plot doesnt blow up itself!. With the power of his he could just roflstomped Orochi and his goons and everything would be fine, instead he choose to play the game Orochi offered. Hell he could have even asked WB for help.

It was kinda hard to swallow that the so badass introduced character was in the end reduced to a dumb naiv fool who was played like a fiddle.

Because he's annoying and stupid, or at least he became that. Just feels like another Luffy, and I think we have too many Luffys running around without his charm. It's like how they made Minato and Hashirama be too similar to Naruto.

The problem with Oden is that after he found One Piece he became so obsessed with the future that he neglected the present and only came to the realization too late to do anything for Wano.
Going out to sea changed him to the point he didn't care so much about his people blight but rather what he and Wano could do for Joyboy when he reached Wano

I think Oden was gullible, that can extend to all the samurais of the scabbards.. even Kanjuro, i am sure that him being a Kurozumi is a lie.

WHy would anyone like him trust Orochi with a promise? more than that, act dumb... not that he had to work hard for it... Oden is not as impressive as Oda wants him to be

When Oden tried to fight Orochi and Kaido forces, he lost.

Even if he tried to gather allies 5 years ago, would the result be different? Kanjuro would still leak his plan. Higurashi would still be there to help Kaido in the battle. The allied samurai would have been arrested, like it happened in the future.

Hell he could have even asked WB for help.
Would Whitebeard help? He's a pirate, it's not his job to save a country. Besides it would be against another Yonko, meaning he would sacrifice many of his sons.

Perhaps if Oden manipulated him by saying he would die alone fighting Kaido (which is actually true), but it's not like Oden to do that.

Orochi did release 100 of the hostages every time Oden danced naked.

Also, didn't Oden himself promised that he would do his part Orochi released him from the barrier? Oden wouldn't break his word.

Oden already "lost" to the Bari Bari no Mi user. Orochi could just have let him die in there. He only let Oden free because they made a deal.

To me there are several things about oden that just didn't click with me. An one that did.

1.- When he was first introduced he was a character that just did stuff and the reactions we saw from others to said stuff just didn't make sense. The part I found jarring is that he basically defiled a corpse in the middle of a funeral and half the people there were near orgasm over how hard boiled oden was. Even by OP standards that just doesn't add up. Oden defiled a corpse in the presence of said corpse's friends and family, that is literally all the context there.

2.- The part that did click with me was when oden travelled with WB and roger. He seemed more like an actual person who can potentially be likeable. Wonder at the world, clashing headfirst against strong enemies... That's just plain fun.

3.- Then the events after the voyage... Oden returned to kuri and.... trusted kaido and orochi. Now, I understand the deal oden was given and how it ultimately protected people. But.... This was still all oden's fault. Oden was terminally naive to the point of idiocy. Oden should have known he was being played, that there was no way kaido and orochi would stick to their end of the bargain. Play the part, plan around it, but don't for even an iota of a second EVER believe there is a sliver of a chance in 9 frozen hells that kaido and orochi would actually deliver on 0.0000001% of their worthless word.

To be honest, the part were he meals one last time with a friend corpse is not for the faint of heart but I approved it. But trusting on a scumbag like Orochi was simply unacceptable; I think that being under the effects of a smile fruit would have been a better solution to the large gap between him returning to Wano and facing Kaido.

I agree on that. Much of Oden alleged charisma was something informed, rather than shown.

While someone could claim that Luffy or Whitebeard wouldn't attract so many followers in real life, at least they aren't desecrating someone's beloved one while said person reaction is to have an orgasm.

Regarding the time Oden travelled with Whitebeard or Roger, it could be that Oda is loosing some tact with his story-telling, so when it involved older characters, and events that already been planned, we saw more of his old style.

To me luffy and WB are different from oden... in that they actually have charisma and it sort of makes sense people kinda like them, within the context of the series. In turn with oden what we got is women being in a constant near orgasm state around oden when he was eating of a corpse he defiled. Contrary to, say, luffy comforting nami and putting his hat on her before confronting arlong for her sake. And even then nami wasn't constantly near orgasm, she was just grateful and saw that luffy was a good friend. WB for instance was in many ways an ass but he still took people in and gave them both a home and purpose. oden in turn was just unlucky enough that his orgams inducing aura applied to the scabbards and followed him in spite of his pretty much actively spurring them (at least at first).

No, he's annoying and a very cheap version of Luffy without Luffy's charms or charisma. Stupid too.

Be constructive. Why don't you like Oden? His design, his character, his portrayal within the series, the arc, etc.
My reason was similar to M3J

Nah, Riku was miles better. Oden is way worse, at least Riku did what he did to protect his townspeople and didn't expect Doflamingo to be that evil. Plus, Riku wasn't similar to Luffy at all, like Oden was made out to be. Oden had King's Haki? yet dull af

Different opinion between you and me. I just dont like how spineless king riku is as a leader. His ideology is too naive and unrealistic

He was spineless yeah, but at least Oda didn't try to make him look super charismatic and shit like he did with Oden. Riku had people's heart with how good of a leader he was, whereas Oden just failed as a leader.

He’s a slow version of luffy don’t see what else is there to say. He’s a great character regardless but he was built to fail.

I like Oden well enough.

The backlash mainly stems from his lack of action during those five years after his return to Wano. I get what Oda was going for, Oden wasn't the hot headed man of action he was in his youth, so he held back out of fear of getting everyone in Wano involved in the crossfire.

It's not the first time in the series a character took an obviously bum deal to keep the peace or to help other people and I doubt it'll be the last.
