I have noticed that there's a lot of criticism against Oden after the flashback, but I don't get it.
Oden is role in the story is very similar to Tom, Ace or Corazón. He had a tragic death, and set the plot forward.
Maybe it's because his silhouette was shown a few too many times. Or maybe it's because he was a member of the Roger Pirates. God forbid anything related to Roger or Raftel is not the most epic story ever written, and instead Oden just fulfilled his already established role in the story.
We already knew everything about Oden, except for the details. We knew he sailed with Whitebeard and Roger, we knew he could fight a Yonko, we knew he was fooled by Orochi, we knew how he died.
Is it because he was too kind and humiliated himself? That's not new in One Piece, like when Shanks let Higuma get the best of him in the first chapter.
Is it because Oden choose not to fight Kaido from the beginning? It would put the population of Wano in danger, and he wasn't sure if he could win.
Much of the criticism I see is not much a problem with Oden character, but Kaido. He barely did anything in the flashback. He had an off-panel battle with Oden, was sliced, but won with Higurashi help. He awkwardly played with Oden inside the barrier. He executed Oden with just a handgun. Even after the flashback is over, Kaido looks like Orochi's bodyguard or drinking buddy.
