Alright I might play this one

Faust · Apr 8, 2020

It's a combined list btw; live action and animated.

But it's up for you to decide your allocation.

Organizized · Apr 9, 2020

That makes it even harder.

Riku · Apr 9, 2020

Luckily I did include animations already in my initial list.

This has made think a lot on what is science fiction really. I'm actually gonna leave out some entries because I don't think they are really scifi. Or rather they are more of an example of another genre, with sci-fi elements or flavor.

z.5 · Apr 9, 2020

The list I've put forward is not so inspired - but even if not all necessarily my favourite sci-fi films, I reckon they have a good claim to being in the top 10 based upon how influential they were

I'm expecting more interesting lists from both of you, Org and Uste, hopefully with some picks that I haven't seen (and can make sure to do so - over the pandemic-period)

Yeah same, a couple of my picks even though they re regarded as sci-fi, might be debatable, especially my #1 and 2 idk, i had to think a lot abt it. Have only 1 anime entry (havent watched yet a lot of sci fi animes movies), and for the remaining picks, well, im afraid a great part of them, though they re mainstream, wont be shared, theres not a single super-hero pick, not that i dislike them but havent watched a lot and those ive watched havent impressed me that much. find it really difficult to rank. But it was a really interesting top to do.

This is a dilemma for me as well since a lot of the ones on my long initial list aren't in-your-face SF but rather have that SF flavor.. but some of those films are so much more my favorites than the obviously science fiction ones so I'm kinda torn as to which approach to take.

Also interesting to note that I thought my final list would be mostly SF classics, but really the majority of my longlist is from 2000 and onwards.

Brandish μ · Apr 9, 2020

I do like a lot of movies which are adventure/horror/etc that are in a space setting. But I chose to leave a lot of those out in favour of ones that emphasise the 'science' part. There's tons of great movies where science/technology is used to explain or analyse something about people and society, the past and the future. Which doesn't really help narrow it down tbh...

Riku · Apr 9, 2020

I'm debating in my head me vs me whether one film I love is scifi.

I'm going mad.

I think my list will be rather mainstream eventually.

Same. I want to push the lesser known favorites but in the end I have to be honest with myself as to whether I actually like them more than some of those which are labelled "greatest" for a reason.

PM me ten sci-fi films. Order them from your most favorite #1 to #10.

I see. Thank you for the information.

Riku · Apr 10, 2020

Down to 12 films. So hard.

Wish I had time to rewatch some of these now.

Done. Ended up with less horror oriented list than I initially thought. The favorite aspect weighted in a lot in the end. While I do love the classics from 50s to late 80s, I did end up with actually quite modern list. I simply don't rewatch those 50s classics. Great films, but there are stuff that is such fun that I end up watching those gain. And I like the direction of modern scifi a lot.

Also, the list isn't maybe as mainstream as I thought. We'll see.
