Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

So what you all expect on how strong Kaido's son to be? Will he be stronger than Calamities or equal or under them at best being YC4 lvl?
I want him to be strong.

At least Jack level of strenght, he would be the type of guy who unlike his father dislikes violence but is insanely strong despite never training.

i am being hypothetical.... One Piece is more than just swordsmenship and i dont know how else to say it.... Shanks would've been a better example but we've barely seen him fight...

They aren't sword techniques, they can work independent of Big Mama... And if Haki techniques didn't work on Prometheus, how would Mihawk counter it?

I think its more like she's always using haki even subsconsciously, but i agree with you and what i was trying to point out... i haven't read your boxing post and i will do now, but it seems like we are in agreement.
I can even change the boxing point a little: Floyd Mayweather, at the time the pound for pound best, fought against Conor McGregor, and MMA fighter. Floyd won the fight. It was a boxing match. He didn't get acknowledged as the best MMA fighter after winning.

Likewise, if BM beat Mihawk, using all of her various powers, but mostly fought with her sword, just "winning" the fight wouldn't make her the worlds best swordsperson. Because they aren't necessarily having a full swordfight, or at the least it's not the only thing happening. If someone like Zoro fights Mihawk, yes, it's 100% a swordfight, and the better skilled will win. Or against Vista, take your pick of pure swordsmen.

As for Shanks vs Mihawk, the truth is, we don't know how Shanks fights. We've seen him pull a sword, but we have seen precisely 0 fights of his. We know that he used to duel with Mihawk in a seemingly friendly rivalry that didn't seem to have a clear winner, and that stopped years before Shanks became recognized as a Yonko, one of the strongest pirates in the world. We have seen his crew, and it's small, and yet he is strong enough to repel Kaido and still make it to Marineford. And he is so strong that with less than a dozen fighters, the marines and all pirate crews lose their will to fight.

The biggest feats we have of either Shanks or Mihawk are right there in Marineford. and honestly, it's not close. It's not like Shanks brought a huge fleet. His strength caused the WG and Blackbeard to both say "nah, not worth it". Meanwhile, Mihawk...was there? He didn't seem to hurt Vista. Crocodile was unscathed from whatever scuffle they had. Jozu took his strong slash head on (yes yes, DF, but he did it nonetheless). Shanks stopped Kaido, another Yonko, then stopped the war. Mihawk cut some rocks.

If I want to intimidate someone through numbers I'll call Roger or Shanks.
If I want to beat a swordsman, I'll call Mihawk.

Through numbers lol. Shanks had maybe a dozen people with him at Marineford and directly challenged an admiral, the entire marines, and Blackbeards crew. If that's intimidation by numbers, well, Shanks himself must be really intimidating.

But if you need to intimidate a mountain, or some rocks, well, Mihawk will due (but it seems like every swordsman can do that, so you have your pick of those. Hell, Daz Bones was able to disintegrate two buildings with ease, when attacking Zoro. I'm beginning to think rocks aren't the most intimidating enemy...)

I want him to be equal to the Calamities and more, I want him to be the “Ace” in Kaido’s crew. And to go a little further, I want him to be a swordsman. So Sanji can fight King (I love to say this, the flaming flying black power ranger against the black fire flying Kaiju, perfect :x3), Jinbe can fight Queen (the biggest fish against the biggest dinosaur) and the Minks can fight Jack (they deserve it) and Zoro can fight him, swordsman against swordsman

If I’m not wrong, Roger destroy a country because someone insults a member of his crew. So he don’t need numbers to intimidate anyone. And even if you need numbers, Roger’s crew have what, 20, 30 members at max? It’s not so intimidating a group of dudes at first sight in the middle of a war.

And Shanks is the same thing. His crew is very little. Shanks it self is a great presence

what are the chances that Kaido's son is actually someone who's already introduced, like someone in BMP.... i am talking outside the monster triplets, since that is already covered.

I'm not the one falling for his bait, in fact it's everybody else that is.
The recent pages have been everyone else vs. Nik
I stopped replying back to his imaginations
Am I whining? No i'm just tired of rereading the same arguments over and over again and how others keep responding to him, I'm the one telling everyone else to ignore him but seems everybody is ignoring me.
I had changed the subject to Supernovas ranking but somehow it went back to Mihawk and Zoro.
This was at everyone who keeps responding to him and crying about his arguments.
So what you all expect on how strong Kaido's son to be? Will he be stronger than Calamities or equal or under them at best being YC4 lvl?
Hopefully he's the Katakuri of the Beast Pirates, if not stronger.

If I wanted to see a swordsman get beaten, I'd get Roger, Shanks, Whitebeard, or Mihawk to help.

If I wanted to see swordsmen fight, I'd get Mihawk or Shanks.

If I wanted one of the most powerful fighters beaten, I'd get Roger, Shanks, or Whitebeard to do it.

Hell, there's no evidence that Roger was even stronger than Whitebeard. The two had a friendly rivalry, and WB never cared to go after one piece. I'm not sure where Shanks ranks with those two, but wherever it is, he's also above Mihawk.

Why is he? What supports that? What is the point of Mihawk's character if Zoro has to defeat Shanks to be WSS while beating the man who isnt WSS?

Zoro doesn't have to beat Shanks, nor will he beat Shanks. You are taking certain things (not even in the manga), and stretching them beyond their breaking point to fit your internal Zoro love.

Shanks doesn't have the title of WSS. He is however a stronger pirate, one feared by everyone. You make the mistake thinking that everyone with a sword is a swordsmen exclusively, or someone who has dedicated their life to the sword the way Zoro and Mihawk do.

(and also note that there is no indication that Mihawk was even stronger when the two dueled, all indications are that as swordsmen, they were equals, and haven't fought since Shanks lost his arm. This is all canon. It's not in a vivre card, it's not in a book that no ones read. It's in the actual manga!)

I think you have to understand something. I'll try to help. THE MANGA ISN'T ZORO'S STORY. Shanks doesn't exist for Zoro to surpass. He exists for Luffy to surpass. And surpass here doesn't mean "beat", since Luffy worships him. Unless something hidden in his life comes up, Shanks will not be an enemy, a stepping stone. He'll be like Whitebeard to Luffy's Roger, someone who shares a drink with him as Luffy goes off on his journey to One Piece.

Mihawk's character's point for Zoro was established early in the manga. Shanks has never played a part in that. He only plays a part to you because you are obsessed with the notion that Zoro, the non-lead character, the man Oda sidelines for months, or years as he focuses on the actual protagonist, will be the strongest. This is entirely your invention. It has nothing to do with the actual manga, how it's been written, what has been set up.

By EOS, Luffy will be the "strongest" character. Zoro and Sanji will be close behind him, but likely not the official 2nd or 3rd strongest characters. Given how much focus is on Law and Kid, I wouldn't be shocked if they are both the Whitebeard to Luffy's Roger in the future since they are in the same generation as him, and are considered just as, or close to as strong as he is.

They'll never fight to see who is strongest (Luffy, Zoro and Sanji), so we'll only have the manga to base this off of. The manga where Luffy will continue to fight the strongest enemy while Sanji and Zoro fight their 2nd and 3rd in command. And that's fine. For normal people, it really is.

I think only Zoro fanboys think that's how the ranking works.

no need for name-calling, just express your thoughts and learn to accept other's opinion
oda often used hierarchy to describe power, no way roger is not stronger than WB. The fact that his bounty exceeded WB's explained much
shanks had a fight with mihawk and mihawk still came out as WSS, simple logic means mihawk is the stronger one

Mihawk continued to go around fighting swordsmen. Shanks went around becoming a Yonko. There is no indication that their fights were anything but draws. Simple logic says: The manga says Yonko are the strongest pirates, ergo, a Yonko is stronger than a non-Yonko (until they get beaten).

Yes, I know what a swordsman is. We don't know how Shanks fights at all, let alone when he is serious. We also know that since he stopped fighting Mihawk, he rose to power and became one of the 4 most feared pirates in the world, while Mihawk tests his power from 200 yards away and fights fodder in the background.

I really don't think Mihawk is much weaker, but there is really no indication he is on the level of a Yonko. Oda couldn't make that more clear when he had Mihawk try to hit WB from 6 blocks down.

Yonko literally just means four emperor, never say anything about being strongest
Emperor coz they have large territories

Why would shanks bring sword with him if he doesn't fight with it? Your argument does not make sense
