Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

huh, I wanted to respond, but then I remembered it is April 2020, so I'll probably just wait a week or 2, since we might get helpful stuff right from the publishers soon. (yes 'publishers' as in plural, as in not just shueisha, though in this case that is the only one that matters)

on a semi related note,

today (it is already Wednesday in Japan) might be D-day and less than half a day to making history, maybe
I've already started my countdown. It will be fun in 12 hours or so.

I think many One Piece fans equate it's legacy with it's sales, because for as long as they've been following it, it's been the #1 undisputed king in the sales department.
Even so, just because KnY is beating it now the fact that it held the mantle of top selling manga for so long, and held so many records for so long won't change. KnY isn't a more important series than OP in terms of legacy, not for jump and not for the industry, at the very least not at this point in time. I think regardless of what fanbase you belong to we can all agree to this.

Seeing a new name at the top for a change after so long is good. It shows that the industry hasn't stagnated yet. Gods can bleed. Kimetsu's rise to the top was a very cool underdog story, and probably the most surprising thing I've seen in all my years of following manga. The fact that some people are so adamant about discrediting it is pretty ridicolous.

Dunno, this apply for every series (that have achieved big sales) not only op, but we shouldn't consider something untouchable because it has astronomic sales regardless of the quality, there will be more series in the future that will achieve the same or maybe more. We have to open our minds that nothing last forever or it will stay there printed in a rock. Time changes, as well as people and their ways of consuming things. :hmph

Maybe in Japan but I doubt about west
Then you're talking about fans that don't interact with online communities, which is extremely small.

From personal experience, One Piece fans love mentioning that their favorite series also happens to have the highest sales. I'm not saying that as a negative, but as a matter of fact.

In reality, it'll be another solid 50 years before we can truly take a step back and see which series in history has left behind the biggest legacy.
That brings to mind an interesting thought, if the top series now do end up leaving a strong legacy and being very influential, what parts of the series will people be influenced by?

Like how you've got a bunch of series where DBZ/One Piece/Naruto/etc was the main inspiration, what could a series where the main inspiration was Ass Class or Kimetsu no Yaiba or MHA potentially be like?

In regards to MHA, the inspiration is so heavily based on American Comics, wouldn't something inspired by MHA be better off taking inspiration from American Comics as well?

I think casual fans are majority. For example, I doubt majority people follow every movie or tv shows they watch online, people just watch and move on.

Manga/anime isn't as mainstream as TV and movies in the West, though.

The biggest percentage of manga readers in the US is online, I'm pretty sure.

In general I agree with you and more when I have read you on occasion. But you have to take into account that DS is simply not more important than One Piece because historically it is only 4 years old. A manga / anime, no matter how boom it may be at any given moment, paradoxically it is difficult for everyone to know it so soon. And despite that great disadvantage, Demon Slayer with just 3 years (2019) broke a few records. And this without speaking of this year.

One Piece was already well known at the time, but only in 2010/11 did it achieve global consolidation. 11 years later.

Legacy, what is a legacy?
It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see

...
anyway, hindsight is 20/20

nothing wrong in talking about what had happened or what could happen,
but comparing what you already know to something that might happen isn't really a wise decision

those 2 scenarios are distinct, meh

anyway... generations are a thing, and they change over time, that doesn't discredit the past, that is what created our current present,

but our current present will shape the future, the next generation and so on,

and they hopefully will create and pass on the "legacy".

some things may be considered evergreen and timeless, but you can't expect everyone to share that opinion.

also,
random, yet related and because I remember random stuff

Which is why I said "at this point in time". In the future? Who knows. The future is full of surprises, and Kimetsu is living proof of that.

I wouldn't say we can all agree about the legacy thing. What a series' "legacy" is, is something that's difficult to pin down. Especially without the benefit of hindsight. For as big as One Piece is, I'm not sure it has that much of a legacy. A lot of Jump's newer series seem to mostly draw their inspiration from Naruto, Bleach, or Hunter x Hunter. There doesn't seem to be much that's patterning themselves after One Piece or Luffy or other characters. In fairness I'm not sure if that's truly on the mangaka, or if Jump's editors are discouraging One Piece imitators. Still, One Piece doesn't seem to have much trying to follow in it's footsteps so to speak. Similarly I'm not seeing how One Piece changed any business practices at Jump. To my knowledge it hasn't caused them to be more accepting of a genre they didn't do much with before, or change how they approach deciding what series to axe and what to keep. At most Oda's health troubles may have encouraged them to be more lenient with authors who are having health issues that impact their ability to meet deadlines, but that's far from certain.

All in all, there's a lot of room for discussion and debate as to what the legacy is of OP, and if it's more important than the legacy of another series. It's likely not going to be until at least a few years after both OP and Kimetsu have ended that we can truly make an informed judgement.

The one who is getting all his assistants serialized in Jump last 2 years has been Tabata hasn't he?
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

I think all this discussion about One Piece Vs. Kimetsu no Yaiba is a bit boring lol

Yes, Kimetsu no Yaiba won last year japanese sales, and of course will win this year. And this year will break One Piece 2011 record (probably Kimetsu no Yaiba will surpass 55 million copies, or even 60 million this year). Yes, Kimetsu no Yaiba is a HUGE success and I think it's good for japanese market that a new phenomenon had appeared, especially for all new readers that had arrived with its new success.

But I think Kimetsu no Yaiba is still far away from the importance or the legacy of One Piece in the Manga/Anime world. And when I say One Piece, I can say other series like Dragon Ball, Slam Dunk, Kochikame, Hokuto no Ken, Kenshin, Dr. Slump, Detective Conan, Mazinger, Evangelion, Gundam, Lupin, Jojo's Bizarre Adventure, Berserk, Ranma, Death Note...

Will Kimetsu no Yaiba be part of this list in the future? Yes, I think so but only time will tell.
Do you think My Hero Academia will also join that legacy list you say?

I really loved your point of view. From a distant but logical perspective, in my opinion. I had never really stopped to think about that fact, although OP is different in many ways, it really is true that you do not see any manga that follows the same line of the best-selling manga in history. And clearly I'm not talking about plagiarizing, I'm talking about similarities.

A really interesting point.

I personally am not interested in all this OP vs Kimetsu stuff. But I'm interested if My Hero Academia will also become one legacy manga in the future.

I mean, MHA is doing numbers similar to a lot of legacy manga (Saint Seiya, Yu-gi-oh, Kuroko no Basket, Haikyuu, etc). I wonder if Hero Academia will be a big hit in 2040 like for example Saint Seiya is in 2020

From last decade we can grant for sure Haikyuu and Kimetsu. What about My Hero Academia?

That is an interesting point. You can constantly see series that were influenced by Dragon Ball, Naruto and Bleach. But, which popular Jump series takes obvious influence from One Piece?

I can think of a few cancelled series (Golem Hearts, etc) but I can't think of any successes. I want to say Toriko, but really, aside from the cookey artstyle and emphasis on worldbuilding, they weren't all that similar.

I'm hesitant to say this since I'm not too confidant with the comparison personally, but maybe Dr. STONE? At least in the way that it starts out as a relatively simple journey that gets exponentially more vast and complex as time goes on (especially with recent developments, lol).

Guys, for future reference, just because a series releases on viz/M+, that doesn't mean it's on-topic to this thread.

RWBY released on the WSJ app at one point, but it's obviously not a WSJ property. The same goes for One-Punch Man, and other such series.

The series needs to be native to WSJ/M+ in order to be on-topic.

I feel like it was easier for later works to be to influence by those series because they mainly had good spins on existing tropes. Whereas with manga like one piece or even HXH it comes off too copycatty
