Toriko seemed ready to become a second One Piece, before becoming the draft of Dragon Ball.

MHA will definitely go down as the top hits of the 2010s alongside Kimetsu no Yaiba, Ass Class, and Haikyuu. We've seen some MHA-influenced series already, both in WSJ itself (Zipman), in a bunch of oneshots, and a couple stuff in other magazines.

One thing benefiting MHA is that it's spending a very long time as a big hit, with anime every year since 2016 (though I don't think we'll see s5 until 2021).

I feel it'll end up leaving a lot more long-term impact and legacy than Ass Class as a result despite its manga being a lot bigger simply because Ass Class was only really big for ~2 years, while MHA has been a top mainstream hit for 4 years now and probably still will be for another 4 years (or more).

MHA will definitely leave behind a legacy. Like people have said, it's already inspiring new series and that will be its legacy. Also, think MHA's legacy is the fusion of western superhero influences into a mainstream manga/anime.

KNY's legacy is something that needs to be seen 10 years from now because of the likelihood that the series will end this year.
Death Note was a super short series but its widely viewed as an important series in manga history. KNY's explosion is very much like Death Note's but the impact it will leave behind needs to be studied at a later date.

That is an interesting point. You can constantly see series that were influenced by Dragon Ball, Naruto and Bleach. But, which popular Jump series takes obvious influence from One Piece?

I can think of a few cancelled series (Golem Hearts, etc) but I can't think of any successes. I want to say Toriko, but really, aside from the cookey artstyle and emphasis on worldbuilding, they weren't all that similar.

While Black Clover is more obviously influenced by something like Naruto, I do feel like One Piece had some amount of influence in the series, from the worldbuilding to the characters and interactions. The series also grew a lot in scale recently, which might help that feeling.

MHA lifetime sales in Germany are 700k
(Germany's manga and comic market is much smaller than the ones of France and Italy, so this might not seem much in comparison)

I think that goes to show how unique Oda writing really is.

When you actually think about, some of the best manga out there doesn't really have other mangas with similarities to them. Berserk, Kingdom, JoJo's come to mind.

I can't really think about any other manga who take many influences from them. I think OP belongs to that group where is really hard to replicate what they do.

There's a bunch of series influenced by One Piece, they're just not in Jump. WSJ isn't going to run a series that feels like One Piece but worse, especially when One Piece is still ongoing.

I feel like it was easier for later works to be to influence by those series because they mainly had good spins on existing tropes. Whereas with manga like one piece or even HXH it comes off too copycatty
Naruto, Jujutsu Kaisen, Toriko, Promised Neverland, World Trigger, Tower of God, Solo Leveling, Undead Unluck?

Also, Fairy Tail was influenced by one piece and wasn't too derivative in comparison to Naruto's influence on Black Clover and My Hero Academia. One Piece also influenced MHA and BC. Story-wise OP is not the most influential, but several series take from the art-style. I don't see too much Bleach influence story-wise either.
I think there's some popularity/proximity bias; I don't think Naruto or even Bleach are that much more influential to mangaka than One Piece.

What the most obscure influence on the modern series? Can't help but feel like we're missing something..

Not Jump, but Mashima's works are very Oda-esque in tone and character designs.
Also, Eden's Zero is better than anything running in Jump right now (sans Chainsaw Man) and there is a GALAXY sized hole in Jump too big for a Samurai to fit, but perhaps a GANG could?

I found out the series recently as the first volume came out. And have to say it looks quite good.

I really don't know how you can affirm these things and stay so calm. No manga you've quoted has been influenced by One Piece. Something that may have influenced, is natural, but influencing to the point that you create your work because you have been influenced by One Piece, definitely no. And logically there is an intention behind it.
Just two examples that deny to some extent what you have said:

Creator of Fairy Tail and My Hero Academia. :pwned

The genre staples were all established in the 70s by the likes of Kinnikuman and Ring ni Kakero, and broadly in the 60s by Kajiwara Ikki with Ashita no Joe, Kyojin no Hoshi and Tiger Mask.
But if you want you can go farther back before manga to other influences. Like the cultural touchstone that is bushido, or much farther back to the Greek epics.

There is an interview between horikoshi and Oda for a lack of a better word mostly comprised of horikoshi fanboying one piece and how some things in one piece influenced him. See some parts of it:

--Horikoshi-sensei has One Piece influenced you in any other areas –aside from artwork?

HORIKOSHI: I love the Arlong Arc. Especially the exchange (between Luffy and Nami) “Help me...” and “Of course!!” I thought that part was especially cool, and I wanted to draw a Luffy like protagonist. Oh and this week's One Piece chapter was crazy good. (Jump has a scattered turnover)

--Horikoshi-sensei has One Piece had any influences on you?

HORIKOSHI: How do I put this...I suppose having characters say things that I feel naturally is one influence I've taken from One Piece.

HORIKOSHI: I was influenced by how your characters have very small eyes. However I couldn't quite draw it all that well and had a lot of trouble....So lately I've been drawing them a little bigger than before (laughs).

You can read the whole interview here

My answer does not have to discredit your post, it is the lack of truth that does it. :pleased

It is curious that from the interview you only quote what is most convenient. One of the things that Kohei also says is that
he could do a protagonist like Luffy, but he preferred to do it in his likeness, for example.
Even the answers Kohei gives are too vague when asked about such influences. It would be shocking if a journalist asks Kohei if One Piece has influenced him and he replies "no" or "obviously not" when Oda is present at the top. For education and respect for what Oda is, of course he will say yes to something.

Besides that I have said it:

Stop! Hibari-kun and Kimagure Orange Road are both pretty influential romcoms from what I gather that don't really get talked about much.

Ninku I think is oddly influential too despite being so short, I haven't seen it myself but I've heard Naruto drew heavily from it (only 3 more eps until the anime is fully subbed though, I'l probablyl watch it if all the new shows are getting delayed). It did run during Jump's golden era though, and everything from back then has had a strong impact.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Also speaking of Ninku, I noticed that its sequel manga is actually longer than the original series (12 volumes compared to 9). Are there many other WSJ series whose later sequels are actually longer than the original? I know there's

Kinnikuman (Nisei is longer by itself, plus the direct continuation will overtake it this year, yudetamago's seriously a weekly manga machine)
Otokojuku (the various sequels are longer when combined, plus there's a prequel and various short spin-offs as well)
Ninku

any more?

I'm the only one who see actual Jump works are more influenced by Togashi/Oda/Kubo(or even shingeki) than Kishimoto?
Asides some ideas(and some of these ideas were in previous series) I don't see any Narutoesque work in the magazine, even MHA can saw more similarities with YYH and Bleach with a OP cast (Mujiwara=Class 1-A)

Just sharing this for fun. This japanese metereologist shared this fragment where he mimics one of the breathing technique from KnY. Also he says he's addicted to the series.
