Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Because Inoue says no new adaptation for Slam Dunk
and Toriyama is the same thing. The God Movie and DBS Super only was made because he got fed up with GT and the live action

Where did you get the information that Inoue denied a new adaptation of Slam Dunk?

Don't quote me on this, but I recall reading something about Inoue being really disappointed with the anime adaptation of Slam Dunk.

Thinking in meta-stuff, I'd love to see Shonen Jump announcements where Yonagi promotes the magazine.

Saint Seiya ran in WSJ from the mid 80s to the early 90s iirc. That coincided with the anime boom in pretty much every country but the anglo-speaking countries, there were 3 titles that were pretty much staples of 90% of an entire generation of childhood worldwide: Captain Tsubasa AKA Oliver & Benji AKA Super Campeones, Saint Seiya AKA Caballeros del Zodiaco and Dragon Ball.

And yeah Seiya is pretty much the most recognizable anime character worldwide after Goku and Pikachu I'd say. And I'm not even joking, there's an entire generation of 30 somethings worldwide that know who Seiya is... I'd guess there's even some old people that know who Seiya and Goku are but probably don't know who Pikachu is (Because their kids grew watching DB and SS, but not Pokemon).

Btw do you know why this happened? why these animes were all over different non ango-speaking countries? Why the anime boom didn't start until the late 90s in USA?

It's because these "Japanese cartoons" used to be sold for super duper low prices in cartoon fairs, Toei would go to them, and getting some money was better than getting none so they were selling their shows for pretty damn cheap to international broadcasters.. and the rest is history.

Also just as an extra funny bit my friends and I used to call Oliver Atom (Tsubasa Ozora, Captain Tsubasa's main character) Oliver gatom (A portmanteau of Oliver and Verga, slang for dick in Spanish).

You are forgetting that Jump manga about different Japanese prefectures, I think it got announced in like.. Idk but super fast.

Yeah I guess Saint Seiya is one of those franchise where the anime is so much better than the manga that.. You just watch the anime (BTW guys if you haven't you owe it to yourselves to watch it, it's on Netflix).

//////////////////////////////////////////////////////////

Also it's kinda weird how Saint Seiya gets lots of adaptations, just like @Mankichi Togawa mentioned there are plenty of manga that have sold way better than SS and still SS is a property that has gotten at least some sort of adaptation every 2 years, like.. Why not DB or Slam Dunk..

Something else of interest, Saint Seiya the Legend of Sanctuary box office.

Super interesting that Mexico surpassed Japan because we have similar stats (both are 126 million population) but the prices here are way cheaper, like I bought a ticket for the equivalent of around $3 USD while in Japan, at least when I went prices were around $18 to enter a movie... Maybe there are cheaper theaters there idk.
There is one reason why Saint Seiya never got popular in the US,....it's because we never got this..

The 80s were a weird time where anything Japanese were "Westernized" in the US. Look no further than the "alternative" titles for NES games. Admittedly though, one reason may have been the lingering xenophobia for the parents of that generation towards anything Japanese due to their parents' experiences in WWII. By the time the 90s rolled around, this view slowly and gradually changed, and eventually widely accepted.

The 80s were simply a difficult time for anglo-speaking countries to accept Japanese pop culture. Animes trying to market their titles to the US sometimes had to accept the possibility of getting so "westernized" until it was unrecognized. Any anime that could penetrate the market during that time had to have a million different things going right for them. Even if they barely made themsleves known to the audience.

As for the rest of the world, they were, ironically more accepting. Although it helps most of the market at the time were in closer proximity (Asia). I personally think it's a stroke of luck that SS was able to gain an audience in the latino hemisphere. Captain Tsubasa goes without saying really.

Wasn’t like eight chapters ago the prior arc so this would be the reception to that arc
Should be for ch.6 yeah, ch.8 was when Gina's arc ended. Ch.6 was the part where he figured out her UN-ability. So next week with ch.7 can't be counted as it is CP, meaning we gotta look at the rank in two weeks for ch.8 though I am more interested in the rank UU gets for ch.9.

edit: link doesn't work right but just search for "Takehiko Inoue’s manga as a living being" interview

Since Buzzer Beater we haven’t seen a TV adaptation of any of your works. Would you like to transform any of your current manga into anime?
Yes, there are possibilities but I can not say anything about it. There’s no concrete plans, I do not seek such projects, but if I someone call me in and I feel comfortable with the project, I’ll give them the green light. But I’m not actively pursuing these projects.

Make perfect sense as to why no anime for REAL or Vagabond. Okay he doesn't deny it outright, but why would he refuse it if it will bring him money?

Maybe no one has really pushed him for anime adaptations more than a point? Like he seems like the type of creator who has a set vision for his work and if a studio or individual wants to create a franchise around that, they probably need to change a lot of their own ideas to suit Inoue's vision.

Maybe a studio thinks it needs to change some aspects to appeal to a wider audience which goes against his vision and the studio hasn't tried persuading him more after that.
There could be tons of reasons why. It wouldn't necessarily have to be solely Inoue's fault that we don't see any further anime from his works.

Like for example - There was an interview with Kubo after Bleach ended where he said he was annoyed with some things the anime took liberties in and brought those up with the studio. I don't know what the issues were that Kubo had.

But if Kubo has had issues with somethings being represented, I can only imagine Inoue's vision is going to be 10 times more strict than Kubo's.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Edit - Here's the summary of Kubo's interview regarding Bleach's anime.

"- Kubo was involved quite a bit with the anime. In the beginning he wasn't but he saw that the anime would change lots of things from the manga and he said "his stomach would hurt". He would get irritated with that and say, "That's wrong!". In the beginning he would look at those different scenes and basically squeeze his cushion with irritation. Then from some point on he asked to check the scripts and the like. Each week, the script would be sent to him. He says he's rather particular about the dialogue and since the anime can't overtake the manga, there would be extra dialogue. Sometimes it would be different from how the character actually is and the readers would notice the differences and he didn't like that so he would correct it. It was a feeling of responsibility to the readers since his name would appear first and lots of people would enter the series through the anime but he also didn't want to let the readers from before the anime down so he would correct it to make sure everything was right. "

You guys didn't have Pegasus Fantasy? Wow, I can't imagine what that feels like, that was the hypest opening when I was growing up and pretty much everyone my age knows it (that and DB's openings, specially GT's lol).

Even here in Italy Saint Seya (or rather as we used to call it, "I Cavalieri dello Zodiaco" (literally, The Knights of the Zodiac) is very popular .....

Saint seiya is very popular here in Latin America, I'm pretty sure if you ask anyone above its 20s to shout Seiya's main attack, they immediately will do it lol.
Meteoro de pegasoooooo.

I'm one of the few people that is hoping that Lost canvas will be fully adapted some day. ;-;.

I don't know what we got here, but it wasn't that. Standard procedure for Anime stuff back in the 80's-2000's was to change the opening. Can't have Japanese people singing on American TV... though I believe that Adult Swim's anime output in the early 2000's did have the original opening to stuff like Outlaw Star, Gundam 0083 and Yu Yu Hakusho

Saint Seiya was localized in the US, but it was just a massacred censored dub on Cartoon Network. While not as bad as 4Kids One Piece, it did turn a lot of people off the series.

Ironically, the manga would be licensed by Viz and that is the complete uncensored experience.

I usually agree with you all the time but I think this is counter productive since it's general talk about WSJ series which should be on-topic. Otherwise, this would apply to a lot of series like Kuroko, AC, Death Note, Gintama, Toriko, Bleach, Reborn, Slam Dunk etc that have ended.

The issue is, there's a balance that must be upheld.

There's too much discussion centered around Saint Seiya currently, which is why in my post I said "mostly."

Discussion on series that have ended isn't prohibited, it just can't take over the majority of the current discussion in this topic. I'd say the same thing for any of the other series you mentioned.

If a veteran mangaka returns, like in the case of Kubo, I'll allow more discussion in that regard. But that's a rare case.

I hope the 55th anniversary Jump game will be so much better than Jump Force.

JF felt like it did not know what direction to go. Dark, serious, and devoid of charm. Whatever happened to the tagline "Laughter, effort, and friendship?",you know the magazine's motto? J Stars Victory VS nailed this aspect more. Or hell, most of the older Jump crossover games.

I disagree. I would agree with you if SS's story related specifics were being discussed over 2 pages.

The posts were also comparing how SS wasn't popular in the some parts of the west and the reasons why it might have been.
It's industry related. It's an important series to Shueisha and WSJ and their history but is also similar to something like One Piece in how it never kicked off in some parts of the west. Anime censorship and decisions/choices.

I thought they were interesting since it provides information about a series that is/was popular somewhere you wouldn't have expected. Much rather prefer such discussions than One Piece vs Kimetsu debates or anything else like those. These are actually informative.

They really need to go back to the drawing board with these games. They just aren't fun after the initial brief bit. I couldn't last more than 2 hours with Jump Force. Also, it was so plastic-y. You'd think they'd have a higher budget.
If done well, these games could have become a big thing with recurring sequels. But ALAS.
