Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I ended up finding this thread in the last few weeks and really enjoying It, but I realized that most of the conversations are about Sales and rankings, and while I really like those topics, I wanted to know the general perspective that you guys have in the quality of WSJ current line up.

I started following WSJ somewhere in the mid to late 2000's but through the years I stopped following the magazine, while still reading some of my favorite manga. However with this hole Covid thing and being stuck in home I started to pick up a lot of manga, and I mean a LOT.

And my opinion is that there is a huge drop in terms of quality and diversity compared to that time. I remember that we had the Big Three killing it, Gintama, Toriko, Eyeshield, D. Gray- Man, Hunter x Hunter, Bakuman, Kuroko no Basket, early Beelzub and some great mid tier series like Mx0 and Nura.

I understand that quality is a matter of perspective and opinion, but looking to this line-up, I Just think It was better back then.

Mostly the line up today looks bland, with average series like Black Clover, a lot of newbies who can't stablish themselves and a lack of diversity.

While KnY is truly a juggernaut in Sales and popularity, the series itself doesn't really have anything special. TPN has gone downhill. BC is average at best.

I know it's a weird subject to talk about, since quality is subjective, but do yous guys have any thoughts on that?
Comparing the strength of the lineup right now feels a bit unfair since this is a transition period for WSJ with almost half the lineup being made of newbies, so I don't really know about that.

I do get your complaints that WSJ used to be better in general, though. I have my personal biases in the current lineup with some series I really like but I used to enjoy the old lineups more than I did any of the recent ones in general. Diversity claim though, not so much. Also Kuroko is basically a 2009 series so it seems weird to include it in your argument that "2000s wsj was better".

Sometimes that's the case, sometimes it's not. I've found that time between chapters, which can be used to discuss the ins and outs of a given chapter with fellow fans and/or allow yourself time to comprehend/process, heightens your appreciation of a series.

Sometimes cliffhangers are less impactful when you can instantly read the next chapter to find out what happens, etc.
Yes exactly, I think reading/watching while it's running it's definitely the better experience since you actually get to theorize and stuff.. But then again we are in the age of Netflix and binge watching -.-

I think there is a pleasure to watching/reading something weekly in which you can discuss with others about what happened that week, but also there is a different pleasure of binging something and being able to experience it all in one go. I used to find it weird that some people prefer binging it all in one go instead of just watching it weekly, but I came to understand why they chose to do so.

It goes both ways really, with binge reading stuff.

There are some really tense moments and cliffhangers and things that took years of build up that you don't feel the impact of if you binge something, but a drawn out story arc might be much better if you go through it all in one, or certain fights and such could be more intense if you read it all as one big thing instead of in many parts over a few months.

What are some mangas, specifically from WSJ you think are better to binge read or read weekly (As they run/ran) and why?

I'll start with BLEACH definitely being better as binge read, so little happened in some chapters that it became a habit of mine just to look thru the raws to get a gist of what that chapter was about, but I'd wait for like 10 or so chapters to actually read it because otherwise it kinda felt like nothing really happened.

I mean there was this battle against this Arrancar I don't remember his name but basically I think it was like .. 10 chapters long at the very least, and by that point I was reading BLEACH.. just because.. Like I had already read like 400 chapters so I was like I'm not gonna drop it (I did.. I haven't read the last arc, which I'm just gonna watch the upcoming anime)..
Anyways reading this battle was such a drag, like Idk maybe it's because BLEACH battles were pretty repetitive, but yeah so the first issue this battle started I just looked thru the RAWS (looking at the pictures basically) "Oh the battle started", the next issue felt like nothing had happened, and so did the next issue... And so did the next one, and the next one, until a character revealed a transformation, and then the next issue a character revealed his Bankai, then the next issue something happened, etc, etc... This is pretty much every battle in BLEACH lol.

Edit: And from the current line up, I'd say One Piece is a better weekly read BUT it also works great as a binge read/watch.. But Oda's panels are so busy that if you binge read it you are going to miss details I'd bet.

I got burnt out from reading OP when it was at WCI and figured it'd be a better binge read instead. HxH also, is a better binge but for different reasons as Togashi does so much setup....

Ignoring the atrocity of a final arc it had, Food Wars was a story that kind of dragged week to week with it's slow pacing (again, ignoring the final arc), but worked really well as a binge. The cooking matches all had the same rhythm/plot beats that flowed a lot better when read together and made the cliffhangers (which was usually an off-screen introduction of a new dish/technique) much more tolerable.

To me Hunter x Hunter is in a super weird spot... I remember back in like idk.. 2010? when Chimera ant arc was being run I hated it, like I almost stopped HxH because all the narrations drove me crazy, Idk I just didn't like it, but I continued and it paid off immensely..

But Togashi is doing it again this arc, too much text, HxH is a freaking novel now lol, and I don't like it lol, it doesn't work for me neither as a binge read because I dont enjoy reading sooooooo much text, but also as a weekly read I forgot stuff!! (Seriously how does Togashi keep track of every single plot element he has introduced in this arc..??)

I mean it's not like I'm gonna stop reading HxH, I enjoy it a lot, but yeah.. too much stuff happening for my taste but if Togashi wants to end HxH on his lifetime I guess he has to make each chapter count.

I really enjoyed Food Wars, but yeah I totally see your point some matches felt super dragged. The final arc as you said wasn't really dragged, mostly because Jump must have seen how bad it was and told the authors to hurry up, but the final arc as you said.. It's just.. ughh...

After I finished the HxH anime, I went to go read the manga and I found myself struggling to catch all the way back up right away. I feel like HxH is a series that might fit that category of better to read weekly.

Generally speaking I'm on the perspective that series should be read from the perspective of binge.

Once it's out, it's out, and nothing can really change that. It's pointless to argue for a weekly read because that kind of experience is only fleeting. If an author is unable to make a full experience from their story, I'd consider that a failure of creative design.

Instantly reading the next chapter is even more fleeting, though. Certain moments/cliffhangers *need* processing time.

Furthermore, it doesn't necessarily need to be weekly. It could be daily and accomplish a somewhat similar feeling.

I feel like the current arc of HxH punishes you for binge reading. There is a lot of info that is likely to go over your head if you binge it. It's preferable to take your time with each chapter. That's why I feel that weekly is better for HxH.
P.S, I actually like all the text, don't ask why. All that P L O T actually intrigues me. this is coming from somebody who also reads "Super Interesting" manga like Yuuna.

But like, a Shonen Jump manga is made to be read on a week to week basis, that's the distribution method, like, I love bingeing series and it's how I read most before I get caught up, as yeah a good manga can be read either way, but I don't think you can really argue that the weekly read is some superficial experience.

As for which series I feel benefits from a slow read, surprise surprise, it's Toriko.

There's too many little details you'll miss if you binge it. Too many impactful moments that go right over your head *unless* you take your time with it.

I've seen too many people binge it only to make remarks or complain about aspects that they otherwise wouldn't if only they'd have taken time to process the information.

How does it punish you for binge reading? If anything I'd argue the opposite. With the obvious inconsistent release schedule of the manga, it's hard to keep up with the details/subplots of the manga. I remember there were fans passing around "cheat sheets" for HxH for those that forgot some details of the Dark Continent arc.

IMO what you can binge read properly, probably depends on the series and how great your perceptive skills are.

Action manga that have larger panels like Bleach, Kingdom, One Punchman are all definitely binge worthy titles.
One Piece, I don't know if I'd wanna binge read that since like someone said there are chances you'll miss out on some details in the background.

Text heavy titles might be harder to binge read without missing details or fully grasp what's going on. Again, think it depends from person to person.

I think the series that fits the most from a slow read is hunter x hunter post chimera ant arc due to the amount of dialogue, death note for the same reason, one piece due to it’s massive storyline , world, and the fact that it’s 978 chapters long (been reading it for a year and still not at new world yet), and the promised neverland due to it having major Easter eggs that are important to the plot.

I feel like it depends on how you read; I can read super fast with battle and comedic manga (with a few exceptions) but have to read slow with good thriller and drama manga due to the amount of attention to detail and dialogue.

Great writeup but, uh...paragraphs exist.
My bad I didn’t realize I was going on for that long 😅

Hunter x hunter does not fit a weekly read because it's not a weekly read. It's pointless to argue while acting like the hiatuses don't completely skew that. The current arc has too many details and plot elements moving for me to keep track of with a gap of years between batches.

Just going from the current lineup, here are my thoughts on weekly vs binge. I think most series can be enjoyed either way and it really comes down to preference, but some series certainly lean one way or another. I prefer weekly as I like staying on top of things and the week to week speculation, but being able to read a completed product or even just a large chunk at once is also beneficial.

One Piece I think is great both weekly and binged, however slow parts of the arc are probably better binged like most of wano. Volumes seem to be designed to end on strong moments, and the distinct arcs are a good marker for progression. Speculation is very fun with OP so I like reading weekly, but it's written so that everything flows together when taken in at once

Haikyuu I'd say binge, mostly to be able to read entire matches at once, however watching each turn of the match unfold is fun too

MHA I'd say binge, especially when the page counts are low. Otherwise works either weekly or binge, chapters can often be pretty action heavy too, which is where I think binge shines the best

BC I'd say binge, very action heavy. Reading the fight against the demon weekly kinda felt like going in circles at times but taking it in all at once wouldn't have that problem

Yuuna I'd say weekly, episodic series I think are best enjoyed weekly, as there isn't as strong of a narrative to pull you into the next chapter, moreso you're own investment in the series and if you'd want another chapter of more episodic shenanigans

KnY I lean binge, especially after the pacing of some recent fights feeling very slow weekly, but I don't know if I'd have the same problem binging it. Action heavy as well

TPN I'd say weekly for the first arc, to build the most suspense, after that really either way. Not the biggest fan of it as of late so I'd say weekly so you don't have to read a ton of mediocre chapters in a row and instead take it one by one, but that's my opinion

Dr Stone I'd say weekly, except when there's slower paced sciencey chapters like the past few on the boat.

WNL I'd definitely say weekly, episodic chapters and romantic developments are better over the long term, and there's certainly more appeal to not knowing who the winner is weekly instead of possibly knowing it when reading the whole thing

Act Age I lean binge, especially during the performances, but the smaller stuff like the past two chapters I'd say weekly

Jujutsu, although an action series, I'd lean weekly. Fights aren't super long and explanations for cursed techniques can be lengthy

Chainsaw I'm not sure, but I'd go weekly to stay on top of all the crazy shit happening, but it's not that long of a read so binging is a fine alternative

For the newbies, you can go either way. Read weekly to see week by week if they may survive and see what's new in jump, or binge after the axe so you don't get attached before it gets axed. Obviously, series like Mitama and Yozakura would probably be better weekly, and stuff like GotW and UxU better binged based on my logic for established series. Agravity and Mash are kind of between those two so I'm not sure what to call, and Moriking and Bone Collection are too new to say where they'll go.

And to think, the ridiculous number of characters is because of Captain Tsubasa. Damn you, Tsubasa!
I think you've beaten the record (assuming it was #1), Togashi. You can stop now.
