Let's count "I don't like fighting" and "I protect nature for a living" 18 and 17 as the same as their murderous counter parts that watch people die for fun.

Ikr, its true the criteria for some character differences is a bit farfetched in Dragon Ball (like Vegetto-Gogeta and the like) but some of the future timeline characters are very different to the main timeline counterparts, F.Trunks being the most notorious example.

How do we categorize this btw?

At the moment, my criteria would be characters under "supporting" in MAL

e.g. Bleach:

There's six characters under "main" in MAL
Primary Characters (Main Characters) not eligible
Ichigo
Inoue
Rukia
Renji
Sado
Uryuu

Secondary Characters (Supporting Characters) eligible
Yoruichi
Kisuke
Kenpachi
Aizen
Mayuri
etc.

But in the case of Bleach, if I were hosting the round, I'd say:
Ichigo is main/primary character - rest are not.
Renji, for example, is a definite supporting character and rest are pretty much there to further Ichigo's development

I reckon you'd have more of a case to argue that Kisuke and Aizen are main characters, than Renji, Uryuu, Inoue or Sado

Naruto:
Naruto and Sasuke are only 'main' characters - rest of the characters are there to support Naruto and Sasuke's stories

One Piece:
This one's a tad more difficult - I could argue that the story is about Luffy's aim to find One Piece/become the Pirate King
or
It would be possible to argue that all the SH crew are 'main' characters, or a sort...

... also, if we take the round purely as 'supporting characters', which might be wise (as otherwise it just falls into another 'best characters in anime/manga' round), then we could knock off most of the shinigami, quincies, visards, etc - leaving only a few choice picks, such as Renji, Ulquiorra, Shinji...

This might make a more interesting round, imho.

Perhaps it might be best to ask/leave the final decision up to the person who suggested the round...

"Characters which were instrumental in aiding/furthering the main character(s) into achieving their goals [as in: supporting their progress in getting from the start to the end of the story]"


unless you can think of a better way to clearly define which characters are/aren't valid... in which case, say that

In my opinion relying on a third party database that already distinguish characters as main/primary or secondary/supporting will be better than just MH users subjectively debating which characters are or are not.

I don't reckon my idea in orange is that difficult - it should be pretty obvious to most people, which characters are eligible and which are not.
And if unsure, they can always ask

Also, is it really that broad?
you can remove 99% of OP/Naruto characters - at least 90-95% of Bleach ones (it's slightly less, due to how fewer named characters Bleach has than OP and Naruto) - almost all of the characters from Black Clover (not that any should win this)...

Since MH glorifies trolls (Community Awards) you can't convince me no one will actually do it and ruin that theme.

I really don't think it's anywhere near as subjective as you are making it out to be - sure, it's more subjective than most, I guess, but not enough to want to avoid running it.

Restrictions will come in the PM, if someone picks an obviously incorrect choice and they can not justify it.
As in, someone picking Babidi from DBZ or Foxy the Silver Fox from OP.

Yeah, that was a joke (the nomination, not what I wrote), but we do certainly get troll picks most rounds (especially for character related rounds)

But if anyone sends a list with Naruto, Sasuke, Ichigo, Luffy, Lucy, Edward Elric, Goku, Alucard, Claire, and Shinji Ikari on it, then it isn't that hard to tell them to pick another list (or not take part)

Depends which Trunks we talking about
When i was a kid Future Trunks was my fav char and for this ranking I did not want to betray my nostalgia, so i just nominated him.
I guess that makes me not love DBZ? Well i always loved the original more anyways

Future Trunks (before Super) is one of my favourite characters simply for taking things seriously and being the most selfless saiyan, he was like the only voice of reason in the whole Cell Saga but, unfortunately, was surrounded by idiots.
