Too bad its often remembered for the pervy antics in many cases.

Gohan has the most development of the whole series, but it's not for everyone.

Goten is only around for kid Goku nostalgia and to fuse with Trunks, sadly. He isn't even a character really.

I don't think he really knew what to do with Gohan.

He wrote him to have more potential power than Goku, but that was rarely utilized in the plot.
I think that Toriyama probably realised just how much more beloved Goku was than Gohan, so he didn't really try too hard to expand upon Gohan's that much (as a character).

Also, Gohan was kinda lacking a rival, to play off against, in the way that Goku had Vegeta.

This is just a fan theory tbh. We do know hhis original idea was just finishing the series (and that he was told to change the bad guy in the cell arc twice). And his original original idea was wrapping it vs Freezer.

I don't think Gohan would have been a good MC. For a comedy series yes(He is great at the beginning of the Buu saga), but not for a battle shonen.

I actually prefer Gohan over Goku. Smart, sensitive, but still strong and good at heart. His development as character is great. Goku has definetly some mental development issues. Sure I love him as well, but I'd rather hangout with Gohan. With Goku around I'd feel very stressed all the time.

We don't know any of that, I certainly don't even know how well/bad the first chapters of the buu arc did money wise. At the end of the day it's a fan theory, Goku is around through all of the arc and Gohan never really takes the torch from Goku and is just a big red herring as to who the hero will be. The pay off of "who will be here to save the day once Goku is gone" is the rebirth of buu, ending the series.
