Moderator Notice:
Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

Sure. UU is rated exceptionally well on there. Meaning it gets usually over 75-80% "very good" ratings on the site which is really rare. I think the only other Manga that get that many "very good" ratings are Chainsawman and JJK. Agravity Boys, just going by what i checked right now, gets usually around 40-50% "very good" ratings and the other categories (good, meh/bad, very bad) are pretty even.
Thank you for the info. That's really good for UU!

I'm not talking about a supposed Japanese reception, I'm talking about how I personally feel about the series and saying that I can see the series failing if a lot of people also feel that way. It's definitely getting a decent bit of controversy on western sites at least, so I can imagine it being similar in Japan.

I don't like Ghost Writer because I don't want to read a manga about a character with no talent who only finds success by plagiarising someone better, and is treated like the good guy. I don't like it as a premise and I find it very mean-spirited to aspiring new creators and to WSJ in general.

What will an aspiring jump mangaka think reading this intro? Seeing a series where someone spends years failing like them, and finds success not because they worked hard but because they directly copied a much better writer?

The message behind the series so far is 'Plagiarism will work out fine as long as nobody's heard of the person you're copying'. That's not a good message to send out.
Well, this is you making up history, the manga never advocated plagiarism at any time.
You are charging a complete story in just 3 chapters and Time paradox is not a mini series.
But let's end the matter here, after all it will not lead anywhere to discuss such an idiotic controversy.

It's just that the setting is unique enough that you cannot judge it before knowing where it goes.
The problem is we need to judge it before knowing where it's going.

This is Weekly Shounen Jump after all, a magazine that sometimes cancels new manga on ch 10. If the first 3 chapters of a WSJ manga are disliked then it doesn't really matter that you could look back and see that it was great build-up by ch 30, because it won't get there.

You can't say 'it's unfair, you don't know how it'll turn out later' because we'll never see that 'later' if people don't like the beginning. In an ideal world all series would have time to grow and show what they're really capable of, but Jump's not that kind.
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Like if people gave everything a chance to develop maybe Last Saiyuuki would've become an incredibly compelling adventure story by now with an anime being planned, maybe Ole Golazo would be the current big sports hit on its second anime season this year, maybe Love Rush would've become the new generation of romcom alongside WNL and Yuuna.

But in jump we have to judge series by their intro chapters, so if theintro doesn't make people want to read more then they won't get that chance to show the journey was worth it.

Even you must have liked some manga that ended up being canceled.
The point is that you may not like a manga for many reasons.
That is why you can say that it is unfair. look we've been following the jump for a long time, so we've gotten used to seeing manga that we like being canceled.
Take GoTW for example, many find it cliché, the characters are boring and the fights have no emotion, and because of that it did not please anyone and therefore the manga will be canceled.
But there are cliché stories in the jump that are successful, there is Black clover that even with criticisms similar to GoTW, but is alive with more than 250 chapters.
That's why I personally think that this controversy about TPGW is unfounded, in no time in these 3 chapters the guy defended plagiarism, not liking the protagonist is acceptable, not liking any character is acceptable, I even abandoned boku no hero for cause of Bakugou, this after 130 chapters.
Now creating all this controversy because of such a silly reason because of the theme, I think it is unnecessary.

I'm not saying give it 30 chapters or something. I'm saying give it at least 8.

Sports manga, romcoms, ecchi, battle manga have a particular set of things they need to be good at to draw people in. However, the time travel concept mixed with manga writing is the unique draw of this series. How the mangaka chooses to approach that and the MC's actions is what needs to be seen.

The series he is plagiarizing isn't even serialized by chapter 3 yet. Let them show him serializing it and his reactions to the reception and how he feels about it - which would probably be the next few chapters.
Then we can judge whether or not this series is truly attempting to normalize the idea of plagiarism or not, IMO

I don't like Time Paradox Ghostwriter.

Although it annoys me that the MC receive praise by a story he plagiarized, that isn't my main problem.

My main problem is that I don't think the MC or the story are interesting (or likeable).

How does jump gauge reception for its manga? I always hear something about reader survey so how does that work? Is that the only way they do it?

Also when is TPGW Vol 1 releasing

TPGW Vol 1 is out in August.

For the reader survey thing, people who buy the magazine get either the paper from print release or a code to enter the survey on Jump website in order to vote. The voting is done either by writing down the numbers of the Top 3 series they like the most that week and sending them by mail to Shueisha, or on online by just selecting those three manga. How does that look like is depicted in these 2 pictures below.

I'm not saying give it 30 chapters or something. I'm saying give it at least 8.
That's the thing, even waiting 8 chapters can sometimes be too long for WSJ. Here's something a former EiC said a few years ago:

Horie said that even if the work in question is by a major creator, if its popularity starts to fall, the magazine may decide to discontinue the series based on reader survey results. He said that editors can determine whether or not a work will become popular by about three weeks after it debuts. The magazine aims to operate closely in line with readers' desires and tastes. Therefore, it places a lot of weight on the results of reader surveys, and readers can determine whether or or not manga will continue.
He also that sometimes series start to get more popular by week 7 or 8, but the decision is often made by ch 10, implying that's sometimes too late to start growing (resulting in some possible hits that just had slow build-up being axed).

Jump's standards for popularity are probably a little different now compared to his era but still, if a manga's not popular by chapter 3 they may already be thinking about cancelling it. It's been a few years since we've had a really early cancellation, but we did get a few series ending at only ch 10-12 in the 2010s, and the U19 club got a new member recently, so they do still judge things very quickly sometimes.

Friend this material is from 2017, things are not so black and white anymore. If it were that simple, Mitama would have already been canceled.

You're using a interview with a editor in chief of the 80's/90's, what he said doesnt really represent Jump today specially when volume sales are slowly being more proeminent in keeping series alive, this volumes that are released when they're over 10 chapters.

I’m pretty sure the MC in Ghost Writer will get caught at some point in the series and the reveal that he didn’t actually write the series will hurt him immensely.

Don’t get why anyone would go into the series think the entire series just be him stealing an idea, getting praised for it, and living happily ever after. There has to be a of conflict, drama and consequences going forward

Jump did not care about Kimetsu and Act Age until volume 4. I still think if the FAT campaign they did for Act Age volume 4 did not work out, it would have go bye bye

I agree, the manga cannot last more than 160 or 200 chapters.
I think that with 120 chapters (as well as gotoubon no hanayome), it would be a good amount.

I don't know why a few people here seem to think Mitama some sort of total failure, it's probably had the best overall ToC placements of any newer series except Mashle. Heck it's even in the top 5 ranked series this issue. Sales might not be great but if it's still around and still getting good placement then chances are it's doing okay on the reader surveys.

If someone can prove all that info from an EiC is outdated irrelevant go ahead. But unless you've got a newer source that says something different, I'm going to trust the word of a former editor in chief over random people on a forum guessing.

Zipman ended at ch 17, and quite a few series the past decade ended even earlier than that, Buddy Strike in 2015 only got 1 volume. They definitely still judge new manga very early.

I don't think that EiC comment is irrelevant. WSJ is still cut throat as it was. S8 from Kishi was just cancelled few months ago. Its why I think BC won't survive past 2 years if it keeps dropping in sales. But anyway, besides the point.

At this point, lets probably just wait and see how the japanese views it based on TOC placements and whatnot. Otherwise, everyone's just gonna keep reiterating their opinion. If I'm wrong and it's canned, so be it. Won't bat an eye.

If anything, the discussion this has raised is interesting, at the very least.

Be careful with the One Piece early spoiler pics lads.

Feels so strange to have One Piece early spoiler pics on Tuesday, and have to wait to Thursday for ToC and next issue cover lol

Nah it has happened several times before. The op leaker is a different one from the one who leaks the toc and the rest of the mag I think.

financially, the editors of jump have more reason to cancel Mitama than Agravity boys or any other manga they put in by example.
If this interview were 100% correct, Act age, kimetsu and sket dance would never have been successful in jumping.
