Naruto never needed to be an epic storyline, about the originator of all ninja techniques, his mum, a magic tree, and [later on] two warring clans that (jyuubi knows how) somehow had DNA that complimented each other in the exact manner to create the same eyes that Hashirama had

It was already doing fine as a far less grandiose (but, and this is key, far more engaging) story about friendship, revenge, and a demon fox

Exactly. Narutos true strength never was the lore and world (actually if you start to think of it, the whole child super mercenary thing is rather silly).

The strength was the characters and their personal, sometimes rather small scale, problems and relationships. With the use of intense action and very hurtful flashbacks Kishimoto managed to get us readers really close to the minds of these young warriors. And he should have kept us there.

But instead he made the amateur editor mistake 101. When you built up the tension, and the tension was really intense in Naruto, you should embrace it, keep us there until comes it comes to an natural end. Give those eye close-ups, show people sweat and bleed. Do not cut out into a wide shot to "release the tension a bit" or "show the full picture" or "expand the world". Why the hell would you do that when you managed already to success in your core task as a story teller - get the readers feel - have them in your grip - build the tension.

God damn Naruto really got side tracked into silly lore instead of the emotional conflicts of the characters.

You draw the boundary at the Pain invasion arc - I draw it a little further back, when Sasuke killed Itachi (possibly even at the point where Sasuke escaped from Orochimaru).

Sure, Naruto did have some good bits following this. The problem, however, is that they were couched in this entirely uninteresting Uchiha/Senju bullshit. As soon as Itachi was retconned into a hero, the story quickly started to degrade into the hot mess that it ended up as - and, as I've said [countless times] before, this switcheroo was not only damaging to the story, but also entirely unnecessary.

That switch ruined numerous characters (Sasuke, Itachi, and Pain, being prime examples [I could also argue that it ruined Tobi, but I personally never found him that interesting to begin with]) - it also (as much as I'm sure people will disagree with me here) seemed very much out of left field.

It led to the ninja war, the increase in OP WTFNUKETHEWORLD jutsu (though that was already becoming a bit of an issue already), as well as all the mythical Hashirama-cells/Uchiha-Senju nonsense, the Jyuubi, and many other awful things.

Now, can any of you argue that you would not have preferred a story about ninjas?

The story, before then, could be nicely crystalized into 3 parts
1 - Sasuke's mission for revenge against Itachi
2 - Naruto's desire to 'save' Sasuke from spiralling into darkness/bring his friend back to Konoha
3 - Pain's desire to bring peace to the world through the ninja version of M.A.D.

All 3 parts nicely fit together with:
- Sasuke trying to avoid Naruto (as he didn't really want to have to kill him), whilst trying to track down the Akatsuki
- Naruto trying to avoid being caught by the Akatsuki, whilst trying to track down (and 'save') Sasuke
- The Akatsuki trying to work from the shadows (Itachi, for example, trying to avoid Sasuke - as he didn't really want to kill him, either [or the Akatsuki trying to avoid drawing too much attention - as, although powerful, they weren't that overpowered at that point in the manga]), whilst trying to track down (and capture) Naruto

This could've made a nice triangle, if Orochimaru had taken a more active interest in tracking down the Akatsuki

That would've left the door open to some of the characters actually performing some ninja-like activities [subterfuge, stealth, reconnaissance...] and would have enabled the author to natrually allow the characters to explore different parts of the ninja world/different villages, as they each tried to achieve their own goals

The idea, for example, of the Akatsuki being made up of powerful ninjas, but being a small enough group that they still have to fear being tracked down (and killed) by the larger (and more powerful) 5 villages, is a really great one. One that opens the door to all kinds of interesting developments and story arcs

It would also have left the door open to the exploration of some more non-nuclear ninja techniques (such as those related to stealth and information gathering)

I'm happy to talk positively about part 1 Naruto
I'm more than happy to talk positively about many of the characters in Naruto
I like the fights of Naruto when the 'ninjas' have to use their brains to win, rather than just turning the whole battlefield into burning ash (Shikamaru vs Hidan being an easy to reach for example)

I still don't understand why Kishi took Naruto the direction that he did. Why on earth would you DBZ a great manga that was more intriguing and dynamic and turn it boring? Why would you take great supporting characters that you built and make them... unimportant? So much potential, especially during the War ARc, and he turned it way too simple with "BELIEVE IN ME NO JUTSU!" and Naruto doing everything, while the only significant losses were Neji and Shikamaru's dad.

Like, Pain's speeches hyped up the war, and Kishi deflated that hype as we went along.

I'm honestly fine with sasuke and naruto as main..kisha could've wrote their characters better.

I don't think Sasuke needed to be one of the main characters, he could have been a vital supporting character along with Shikamaru, Kakashi, and Sakura. I also hate how he turned into an enemy, rather than stay a rival. Or do I hate how Naruto and Sakura were obsessed with him?

The thing that disappointed me the most was Naruto being the son af a genius, i loved when Naruto was the "loser" , the "nobody" doing his best, working hard. the whole series was about losers vs genius, after all, and i wanted him to be the loser who managed to become hokage. I like a lot Rock Lee and Guy, and wanted Naruto to stay the same as 1st part. But then he ended up being the son of Minato and Kushina (another genius), and all his "zero" background, all his "i dont rely on family legacy" his vs Neji fight & discourse, became nonsensical somehow. (i do llike minato and kushina but well).

@Nii and yes i did enjoy a lot Naruto despite the flaws all the stuff i dislike, and i still consider it as one of the series that impacted me the most, not among my top top10 faves but definitely one of the most memorable, i did have good times reading it and even watching the anime.

I thought it was implied Naruto was the son of Minato back in Part I. Personally, this wasn't a problem because Naruto was still the same, he was still an outcast loser who worked hard to get where he was. The problem arose when all Naruto had to do was say "BELIEVE IN MEH AND MY TALK NO JUTSU!!" and people did. Then he got handed free shit like working with the Kyuubi and etc, that made it boring. I had a great thought on this a long time ago, but I don't remember most of it, sadly. Like, how his heritage didn't cancel out his hard work until the War Arc.

Their relationship in Part 1 was great and I don't disagree. Him motivating her to do better and her slowly falling in love with him due to that is fine character work. But the fact that they barely interact with each through the majority of the series is a large detriment to me "buying" their relationship. The fact that Kishi literally admitted that he had Neji die to get that ship to sail and The Last movie had to genjutsu Naruto into realizing his love for her doesn't help matters at all.

I'm definitely in agreement with all of that about Sakura. I liked her at the start when she was independent and made true of her promise to not fall behind Naruto and Sasuke. But then Part 2 kept going and she just became the worst. Boruto certainly didn't help either with Sarada's little mini series in which Sakura reveals that she not only never kissed Sasuke, she couldn't remember if he ever wore glasses.

That's why I leaned more towards NaruSaku because, as you said, it looked like she was growing to like him and care about him. Couple that with their panel time together, and I was more for that than Hinata who had nothing going on at the time.

If Kishi had done the bare minimum of leg work like, I don't know, having Naruto acknowledge Hinata's confession after the Pain fight, I'd have been more inclined to buy the relationship. As it stands, neither Kishi nor Naruto pulled through on that. Now all that's left is Doujin authors picking up Kishi's slack.

I agree with you in regards to their relationship, and I wish we had more of Naruto and Hinata without using Neji's death to bring them closer. Like, that makes no sense when Hinata literally jumped in to save Naruto AND confessed she loved him. It feels weird and out of character for Naruto to ignore that completely until the war. Kishi could have either done way better or consulted his wife (I think she had input on Minato and Kushina's flashback?)

It's like, Sakura became a running joke after the first Shippuden arc, it makes you wonder wtf happened. Plus, having her with SasuSaku just made everything worse because she easily forgave someone who tried to kill her and was obsessed with him again. Sasuke at least hinted he felt something towards Sakura back in Part I, even if he did try to kill her after beating Danzou.

Seeing a kid around my age (back then) spitting fire intrigued me...Then some time passes, and the next episode I watch is Neji vs Hinata, that totally had me. Then Rock-lee vs Gaara, and I was hooked...!

Seeing a kid around my age (back then) spitting fire intrigued me...Then some time passes, and the next episode I watch is Neji vs Hinata, that totally had me. I had completely forgotten about Konan. Man, that was really a top 15 narrative crime of Kishi's. Just straight up discarding a character without really ever doing anything with her. Great concept. Great character design. Even had a cool backstory but unfortunatly she just became Nagato's lovely assistant and nothing else. Only to die really stupidly.

#1 crime will always be Neji though. Such potential in that character. Two really solid stories in a character arc. Then a final one that just shits the bed with a force and ferocity that's difficult to believe.

Around the Konan part was where when things really started to get bad though. There were lots of warning signs and problematic stuff before that but I remember that period after the Danzou/Sasuke fight was really the point were things got bad.

Like after all our time with the cool Jinchuriki's like Garra's raccoon thing and Naruto's menacing fox we got Killer Bee's rapping and his stupid octopus. Then the hits just kept coming. The dumb stuff with Kabuto. The power ranger puddy army (so Kishi could have a war without really having a war). Everything Uchiha/Senjou. It just kept getting worse and then all of a sudden there was Kaguya and all her bullshit. It was just a 4 year long process that dismantled any potential the series had while we all watched on in horror. Good times.

Couldn't agree more. I was so relieved when it ended to not have this painful routine anymore regularly checking in with that shitshow, but also the constant question on the mind why couldn't it have been wrapped up sooner?

This weekly release schedule and dependancy on ratings have such big impact on quality of the story that makes me dislike its very concept. Creativity and artistry is compromised by the big capitalistic money kraken. Sad.
