Naruto's not blameless either. <_<
Him and his Kyuubi got way too overpowered.

The Kyuubi was always overpowered - that was pretty much the point of the mythical 9 tailed fox
(it was meant to be a risk to Konoha, by itself - enough that the Hokage would have to sacrifice his own life as the only way to deal with it)

You know you have a problem when the majority of villains from part 2 could arguably solo the 9 tails (making the 4th's 'sacrifice' appear rather less necessary [and his abilities (and those of the village) far less impressive])

But Naruto... well... like for most things in the story, you can (and I'm more than happy to) blame the Uchiha for that also
Naruto had to get OP, or else he'd never have been able to compete with Sasuke [or any of the part 2 villains]

Around the Konan part was where when things really started to get bad though. There were lots of warning signs and problematic stuff before that but I remember that period after the Danzou/Sasuke fight was really the point were things got bad.

Like after all our time with the cool Jinchuriki's like Garra's raccoon thing and Naruto's menacing fox we got Killer Bee's rapping and his stupid octopus. Then the hits just kept coming. The dumb stuff with Kabuto. The power ranger puddy army (so Kishi could have a war without really having a war). Everything Uchiha/Senjou. It just kept getting worse and then all of a sudden there was Kaguya and all her bullshit. It was just a 4 year long process that dismantled any potential the series had while we all watched on in horror. Good times.

We all wanted to buy into something and we got scammed.

I think your right losing the tension was a problem. But there were so many problems that contributed to that. Like Zim was saying earlier the retconing with stuff like Itachi screwed things up because, as a story builds, it creates momentum and tension. Each arc characters should go through things that effect them in ways they can carry to future arcs. That's what's an overarching plot is supposed to be right? You can't just suddenly change that, much less do it repeatedly.

What happens doesn't actually need to be bigger and bigger and bigger. Escalation is not the same thing as progression. In an all too common mistake among shounen authors Kishi tried to substitute one for the other. The fights got bigger but meant less.

To take Naruto's ideals and test and mature them through his experiences as a shinobi. To do the same with Sasuke. And with Sakura. And with Hinata. Etc, etc.. That's where the real strength of the story was.

But instead Kishi pretty much destroyed the story while trying avoid that to the point where Naruto is fighting Genova from Final fantasy VII because that's how far he was willing to go in order to have something else to blame for everything that he could unite people against. That's what all that fatalistic crap was about to. And the Senju and Uchiha shit. To have his characters simply "caught in the current of history". So there is no guilt, blame, regret, conflict, reconciliation, redemption, love. All the personal emotions and conflict that actual good storytelling thrives on, Kishi ran from them. Not sure why, but in the end it doesn't matter.

This is why I sometimes defend Bleach and Fairy Tail. Two series that ran into that simply ran out of road. But with what little they had Mashima and Kubo tried to spin that straw into gold. They both failed, IMO. But they tried. Kishi on the other hand had gold and spun it into straw. That's why I never defend Naruto. I consider it indefensible.

Yea it's the one and the same problem, really.

The Senju/Uchiha stuff was bad, especially the reincarnation stuff or whatever that was. Naruto's character was pronounced dead with that.

I loved the Madara vs 5kages...one of the if not only highlight of the war.
But thats what it shoulda been...those 5kages...not +4 dead ones...idk

I mean kishi coulda went off the deep end with power levels and such...Idgaf but when he started taking the story out of the newbs hands...and had dead characters save the day.
It wasnt the basis of Naruto that we all fell in love with.
Fanservice is good and all...but not when its a cog in moving the stories progress.
We coulda got all that thru characters flashbacks/memories...my 2cents

Sage Mode Naruto was great, and I think he'd have been able to compete with his cleverness as well. What separated Naruto from others for me was just how shrewd he could be, and I feel like if he was given proper development, we could see him blossom into someone who's actually smart. I've always argued that he was intelligent though, and that his childhood is why he was "dumb."

Agreed. Pain's speech at the end helped build tension, but once you realized that Naruto was going to be saving the day constantly, the tensions just turned limp.

Those two were hyped over the course of the arc. Literally from the first moment they meet you have the 'Last year's top rookie Hyuuga Neji', and 'This year's top rookie Uchiha Sasuke.'
All to amount to nothing
To date that is the one fight I am annoyed never happened.

Teenager syx would have definitely agreed with you there, but nowadays I think Neji vs. Gaara would have been the much better fight technically as well as aesthetically. The Gentle Fist against Gaara's sand bombardment sounds sick as fuck. Not sure if Sasuke had a legit chance against Neji back then.

It started with approx. 8 days as far as I remember. I think 7 days is normal? In any case, I honestly miscalculated the level of participation for the Naruto theme. Sure, its popularity can be compared to One Piece, but it already ended years ago while OP is still ongoing. My pms might have helped a little bit, but I still didn't expect that many entries.

Trivia - Top Ten Game - Interim Round 45: Naruto Characters

Being a host is fun. But only if your list resembles those of the others. syx has no fun.

Two Members have 8 matching characters in their lists, but none of them match in terms of points.

This is surpassed by two other Members who also have 8 matching characters in their list, but here we have a matching 1- and 10-pointer.

I considered to tier your lists (Sakura < Genin < Chuunin < Jonin < Kage < Akatsuki), but I discarded the idea, because it would give away too much information. Not to mention my frustration over your lists, since most of them would end up in the Sakura tier.

Kudos to the Member who wanted to take advantage of the fact that I didn't read the Naruto novels, and thus blend Shigekuni Yamamoto Genryusai into their Naruto list (it is not lakhan220). That Member was even smart enough to provide a picture in the hopes I wouldn't check the internet to find out about this low level Genjutsu. But listen to me guys... my Sharingan powers surpass these of Bleach. I can see through Kyouka Suigetsu and my Amaterasu will extinguish any form of Ryujin Jakka or Zanka no Tachi. As jdw once said: it is impossible to troll Yondaime my Sharingan. Get over it.

You can't imagine how awful it is when there are characters with slightly identical names, and you realize it way later, which means you have to check the other pms for possible fuck ups from your side.

The feels when Members vote for a Mizu/Rai/Tsuchi/Kaze/Ho -kage, but don't specify the number, and you are left behind to figure out yourself which one they mean.
