There is also just a tremendous amount of pressure on them as they do a weekly series. We have years to think about what they did wrong but they had far less time to decide what to do in the first place. Add to that the other realities of life. Family. Etc.

Given all of that it's not really surprising most end up going for something simple. Especially in a competitive magazine like Shounen jump. Week to week there is real pressure to keep people engaged. Nuanced story telling takes time and preparation. But you can just pull a dumb power up or OP villain out and solve some short term problems even if it slowly kills you long term.

I also think a lot of times authors have ideas for plots that just don't work and they don't know that until they start to do it. Then they have to do something that will and sitting right there, marked "break in case of emergencies", are all the bad shounen tropes we know so well.

After that, it still had a whole number of good parts, like the Minato/Kushina flashback. Heck, a whole lot of that preparation before the Ninja War was pretty hype. As a Kisame fan, I really liked that showdown with Guy : D

And then... the Ninja War happened. Which was a hot mess, I think no one can deny that. It still had its moment, but overall it was very obviously not good. Almost everyone probably gets a little angry thinking of Obito and Kaguya

Does that ruin the whole thing for me, though? No, I still look back very fondly on Naruto, and often find myself surprised how many people are trashing the series when they seemed to love it just as much in the past. I understand the salt to some extent, but for me the Ninja War alone isn't enough to shit on the whole series. Long story short, I hope to see some more love here

First series for me and obviously special place for it . And, well , just see it as a constructive criticism as some of them are legit correct.Also, Hating on old classics has been a trope lately , even bandwagoning. Personally, I don't care. :catshrug

Would like to eliminate kabuto and 3rd raikage from there.
Kabuto - Not a single jutsu tht can defeat 9 tails, bar he summons edo tensei OP hashi or maddy.
Guy - will have to pay with death, only for kyuubi to recover later easily. not much fruitful results unlike minato.
3rd raikage - definitely not because the most he could do was tie with hachibi, who still had less chakra then the halved kyuubi and whole kyuubi has at least 2 times or more the chakra + when minato removed the yin chakra, kyuubi was proportionally multiple times smaller.
So, even size wise, raikage's 1 finger jutsu is not doing much damage.

As in ? Multiple shadow clones ? Then, no, it has literally got nothing to do with kyuubi, it was him using his chakra to his limits. The very first influence of kyuubi was only shown during zabuza arc and healing , a bit earlier.

Transmigrant makes it better? All of this was way late in the game, after we were convinced Naruto worked hard to prove himself, and sometimes was a simp, because of the nine-tails discrimination etc. It's more about the reader feeling 'cucked' with the total re-hash of Naruto.

Or they just stop giving a shit and don't put as much effort into giving us quality, sometimes due to exhaustion, so they phone it in. It's actually quite upsetting when you realize just what could have been, like how we could have seen Naruto mature and how Sakura could have been a badass.

Lord knows I share your disappointment on both those things. Shit writing is shit writing and Naruto has a lot of that. Still I am somewhat sympathetic to manga authors when they make bad decisions because of the difficulty of their task. On the fan side of things it's just brutal to go through that, as we both did.

The thing that I'll never really understand. Is how he could do it so right before he did it so wrong. Example. Garra. The way Kishi took his character from the chunnin exam and brought him to help Rock Lee during the Sasuke pursuit arc. That is what character arcs are supposed to look like. That is one of a very few examples of him doing that correctly.

I sort of wonder if that editor who left was somebody he leaned on more than anybody realized. Like for fundamentals of writing.

Because I'll never forget after the Pain invasion was done, during all the stuff that came after that. I was pretty shocked at how badly written that period of the manga was. It's probably the 2nd sharpest drop off in series quality I've ever seen.

I'm just adding to what you said, as we're generally in agreement. It's kind of hard to be sympathetic to some authors like Kishi though, unless he was that burned out.

Agreed. I feel like that he may have done what he did because the editors wanted more DBZ-style writing as that's what it turned into in the end, another DBZ manga with power levels and AOE attacks.

Agreed. I'm still angry. Plus, I'd have loved to see a more mature Naruto during the war, not a worse Naruto given he was great during Pain Arc until the dreaded book no jutsu.
