Either way it wasn't on the level of the Uchiha sharingan nonsense. But that's not really my core point, honestly.

My core point is that the inherent imbalance in the Uchiha clan and all the Senju stuff, and various other absurdities that happened, were all forms of plot cancer. Just that idea that you have certain superior clans who were more important than the other clans diminishes the depth and variety of the world. As well as gimping the fights themselves.

Imagine for a moment that you take away all those broken powers. Individual shinobi are stronger and weaker but the general strength baseline is a lot closer. Is that series better or worse? I think it's better, much better in fact.

You would not have uneven comparisons like the Uchiha versus like.. the Aburame clan. They got bugs. Whoopie. With a more even playing field characters like Asuma or Kurenai might have actually been able to be relevant too. Like TenTen could have been great in a manga where actual skills mattered. She just wasn't in that manga.

I like Basilisk though.

Another good series that treats ninja well is Jigokuraku. The ninja in that series do not mess around.

Part of why I was so into Naruto is that vein of heroic fantasy it's got (or once had). I think you'd agree that's not Basilisk. Which is a good series, it's just not that. There is a certain appeal to stories of underdogs and heroism that keeps us coming back to shounen after being burned so many times. There is bad that comes with it, obviously.

But those moments like Naruto Rasengening Kabuto to protect Tsunade. Or him beating Garra after the Chunnin exam. Those are what I want.

At this point I don't think it's worth the time investment. For me, a weekly battle shounen series has such a low probability of being good that I don't even bother anymore.

I would much rather take 5 volumes of Basilisk, or maybe a monthly series that distinguishes itself. There's something about the weekly grind that leads all of these series to ruin, with few exceptions.

I definitely think Basilisk is a terrible manga to make that case with but you aren't wrong. There are a lot of opportunities for success and failure in weekly manga. For me, most end up on the happy side of that equation (I'd put Bleach and Fairy Tail on that side of it) but the failure rate is considerable.

Weekly or Monthly though the long running stories coming apart at the seams is just a fact of life. Shounen manga doesn't have the market cornered on that. But when it's good it can be great.

Terrible manga to make what case with? I wasn't comparing the content necessarily, outside of the ninja stuff. I just think there's merit to stories having a better chance of not being ruined if they end when they should end. You just have to assume that many authors feel pressured to continue something when it's a hit, and I don't think the average length of a weekly chapter leads to the best developments either. Stories have no room to breath week-to-week and in many cases things are for more enjoyable to read in longer format after the fact, even if it felt like a chore reading it when it was being published. I almost never experience that when reading a monthly series, I just think they're probably paced much better.

Asuma's death was sad, especially where it related to Shikamaru. Shikamaru grew a lot in two moments: after coming from from failing to rescue Sasuke and after Asuma's death. Asuma was like that cool uncle, and I missed his presence.

Kushina was pretty good, but she was too much like Naruto, like Minato and Hashirama.

I think this is a good time to make a break and discuss about one of the most controversial characters in this series, Uchiha Obito.

I honestly don't know where to begin with. Not sure if a character such as Obito is even worth a damn single letter. Throughout my whole Otaku-life, I came across many badly written characters. But three characters take the cake for me, and this with an incredibly huge gap. Obito is one of these three characters I consider one of the worst characters in manga/anime history I've ever seen in my life. Everything about him reeks of plotholes, contradictions, and stuff which doesn't make any sense whatsoever. Aside from his appearance in Kakashi's Gaiden, every single panel with him dragged the whole series down, literally. Period. He is one of the main reasons why this manga became and ended this awful. The whole circumstances about his survival made no sense, his change of character made no sense, his goal based on the events he witnessed was laughable, the question why he did so little before the start of the series is unanswerable. The biggest Uchiha noob to ever exist in the Narutoverse, every unnamed fodder shinobi would have accomplished much more if they had the abilities and power-ups which Obito had.

Sorry to everyone who likes Obito. But he pretty much destroyed the series in a tag-team with a certain other character for me.

If you consider this not civilized or as bashing a character -> feel free to report me. I won't take it amiss! I gladly take whatever punishment there is.

Fro thinks so too, Obito was decent but after Tobi was revealed to be Obito, it absolutely destroyed his character and made him one of the most idiotic and shit characters ever. Like, despite having knowledge on Minato and surprise attack, he failed so badly and was never able to do anything to Konoha even after Minato's death. He was a complete and utter failure and one of the most annoying characters.

I feel like Izuna was a legit possibility as well until Kishi read theories of Tobi possibly being Obito and liked that better.
