Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I've kind of done that with this old list I made and posted years ago that listed successes and failures since 1997.

It's not the best put together, and if I were to completely redo it I'd probably completely re-evaluate how I categorize what is a success or not with sales taken into account. Still I decide to update to current info based on the same metric before posting again.

Yearly Jump Success/Failures

Put this together awhile ago because I was bored and continue updating it every year. Thought I’d share.
I started this list at 1997 since that was the debut of One Piece and began the era of modern Jump.

These aren’t the perfect criteria to judge success by, but it’s the one I’m using.
Huge Success= Became a defining series for Jump.
Notable Success= 3 Or More Years
Quasi Success= Ran for 1-2 Years (with exceptions for short series who received anime)

For 2014+ these are tentative guesses on success.

1997

Looking at shoseki numbers and... at least Agravity kind of held? sort of? hard to find any sort of silver lining here, going to have to start preparing my notes for the funeral.

So I checked around, and as far as I can tell, this is the biggest first week for a light novel on oricon to date. Second highest I could find would be Biblia Koshodou no Jiken Techou Vol.4 with 225,948 in 2013.
I don't know the biggest first week for a light novel but haruhi vol. 10 did more in its first week.

Weekly Light Novel Rankings for May 23 – May 29
*1, 341,184 *,341,184 Suzumiya Haruhi Series vol.10 Limited Edition

It's ok. What I do know is the highest novel(not light novel) sales on oricon in 2014(and i doubt it has been overtaken). Eien no zero(kodansha ver.) did 4,383,020(5 years) at the end of 2014 and oricon stated that it was the highest in any category for a volume.

oricon article when eien no zero surpassed 4 million (from 2014)

The article also states that the closest/previous record holder was ONE PIECE 61 with 3.765 million(3 years) in 2014.

Well, that's another record that KNY will surely top.

Funny thing about Kimetsu and these records now is that its not a matter of IF Kimetsu can break the records, its simply a matter of WHEN.

I see HeroAca is selling really well in the U.S., while Kimetsu still has Japan by it's wallet. I didn't know how big HeroAca was in the book market, though. Damn.

I honestly expect to see Kimetsu's U.S. sales begin to improve from this year (if COVID doesn't fuck things hard enough). I believe it's begun to consistently chart in the NPD Bookscan rankings now. I can see more people go out and read the manga, especially after the movie hits.

(This isn't some random person. Rather, this is actually the official translator of HeroAca for Viz Media saying this. Just in case anybody doesn't know and asks how legitimate this is.)

Whelp, that settles it. HeroAca's on an entirely unexpected break this issue. I really hope Horikoshi's doing fine.

It didn't rose though and that's the true problem. Just write in your funeral speech notes stuff about dreams and Chris, hopes and Chris as well as potential and Chris. And do not forget to write about Chris and Chris, that is a very important point to mention.
But yeah, AB is the next goner if there is no miracle waiting on the horizon. Only question is if Mitama will also follow of if the bird escapes the axe yet again.

Do you have a limit on the number of series that can be canceled per year ?

if you have a limit amount they can just leave the cancellation of Mitama and Agravity to 2021.

It all depends on how many new series start, since they never go above 20 series total in the magazine for more than a few issues.

The most new series we've had in one year in about 3 decades is 14. There's 12 so far, so 2 more new series (and hence two more manga ending) seems reasonable going by past records and considering we still have a lot of time until Jump 2021 starts.

So I think we probably will see Mitama and Agravity Boys end this year but possibly nothing else until WNL in early 2021.

Yes, but remember WSJ's years end in November, so WNL probably ending in December means it'll be ending in the first few issues of 2021 WSJ.

So I'm thinking we'll see Burn the Witch and one or two more series in 2020 Jump (taking the place of Mitama and Agravity Boys), then the next batch might not be until around December when WNL ends.
