Henceforth, I will be deleting posts that complain about Weekly Shonen Jump having too many/not enough gag/battle/exorcism/sports/etc series.

These posts are not insightful, and do not meaningfully contribute to this thread. Also, this decision is not up for discussion, so posts discussing this decision will also be deleted.~ Halloween

I caught up with CSM. It feels good to be caught up again but at the same time the feels :emocat

Ao no Hako was a pretty good one shot. It feels like something out of WSM lol. I'm guessing it's going to get serialized with it's reception.

I would at least be ok with it if Matsuki wasn't still getting royalties (small as they are)...

Is it possible for Jump to legally change that agreement? If anything, the revenue should go to Usazaki.
No and why should the revenue go to Usazaki now? Over a scandal? He still did his part in writing the story. Even if Jump tried changing the agreement I would assume that it would turn into a legal mess and Matsuki would probably fight back.

Unless you want to count romance series where a character happens to play a sport (Blue Flag, Your Lie in April) or the reverse (can't actually think of any examples right now but I know I've read some) the closest I can think of is Chihayafuru which is ongoing and started in December 2007 (has 44 volumes and 70+ episodes of anime). That's in a Josei magazine though so it's not really comparable.
I think Namaiki Zakari counts? Romance focused with a sports background. It's still ongoing (started in 2013) and is pretty sucessful too, with a circulation of 4 million for 19 volumes (so, We Never Learn level).

In regards to covers for the rest of the year, I think Mashle will definitely get a second one before the end of the year, Undead and Yozakura seem less likely but I wouldn't put it out of the question. As for the established series, I think we'll see a lot of Dr Stone and Jujutsu covers in 2021.

Well, the author came from there. He had a 4volumes series in WSM and a bunch of oneshots before jumping ship to Shueisha. So it's not surprising that it gives that vibe, I would say. It's a pretty good thing imo, not a fan of WSJ romcoms.

An incredible chapter for Jigokuraku this week. This series handles backstories so well and this fight is heating up nicely (pun intended :cheez)

Seriously cant wait to see this manga get animated one day. Please let the studio be David Pro

True.

Although Matsuki is a deplorable person, this is still his work (which is unrelated to his crime), so he cannot be deprived of his earnings.

That said, his victims can sue him. So, he may not end up enjoying those gains.

I saw a few tweets mentioning it last night on JPN Twitter, but it's still baffling to me. Most of this has to be from resellers, right?
I think overall the increased sales for Act-Age right now is probably a combination of a few things:
  1. Controversy increasing its name recognition and people flocking to something 'dramatic'. The same thing happens when artists/singers do something awful or are part of a controversy - their streaming numbers actually go up. I remember it happened with R Kelly when his documentary aired.
  2. People who partially have the manga already want to ensure they have the rest.
  3. Fans are trying to show their support for Shiro Usazaki, perhaps in attempt to keep it published.
  4. People want to leave negative reviews online like people were theorising yesterday.
In the end it's probably a mixture of a positive and negative responses to the news that has people reacting by jumping on the series. I'm sure Shueisha/Jump aren't blind to that either.

If Jump keeps starting new rounds of 4 series every 8 issues they don't need to worry about what series to give covers to :3c
Out of all the 32 covers Jump has had this year, only 16 (half of them) have been inidividual covers for older series. If we count the upcoming series, it will be 20 shared/debut covers out of 36 issues. They really could move forward like that lol.

Also...

Blue Flag
Blue Lock
Blue Period
Blue Box

What is with these titles? Lol it's getting ridiculous.
I assume it's because the first kanji in the word for adolescence/youth (青春) means blue.

I still hold out a small hope that AA survives this but with a new writer or hopefully Matsuki already wrote out the entire story as text as some mangakas tend to do and he sells that to WSJ when he has to leave (he doesn't sound like the kinda guy to do so though) so that Usazaki can continue this on her own and give it a satisfying ending. Because ending it right there where we are at the moment.... man.... that would suck...

In Blue Lock case (mini-spam mode: the best spokon manga currently in serialization in the Big 4 shonen magazines for me. If you haven't read it, give it a chance), the Blue is because Japan football team are the Blue Samurais

I put it on hold after the first volume despite enjoying it, however the premise of all these youth being locked away in a secret facility to play soccer seems related as well. Due to the rules of the Japanese language many titles can have rather obvious double meanings.

I personally think best case scenario is MAYBE they allow Shiro to wrap up this current arc quickly.
Then afterwards we get 2 or 3 “This is what would have happened if the series never got cancelled” montage chapters. Like we usually see with a lot of axed series with their final chapters(Golem Hearts ending comes to mind)

From what little I've read of AA, I wouldn't want a new writer. Despite his disgusting behavior, he's clearly a talented writer and having anyone else conclude the series would probably mess it up. I know not everyone on this forum is willing to separate the art from the writer (which is fine) but Matsuki must be the one to conclude imo.

AA doesn't look like it'll survive in WSJ but not all hope is lost since it can very well end in another magazine (assuming Usazaki is fine with it). The same thing happened with Takeshi (it was apparently in it's final arc at time of the scandal). After like 3 years, it was later serialized in Super Jump (seinen mag.) to give a proper conclusion (a whopping 10 chapters) and hell even got the cover for it's serialization

I would hope that Usazaki will move on for now (i.e work on another series) and once some time has passed (at least a couple of years honestly) regarding Matsuki's scandal then they'll conclude in another magazine (ideally a lesser known one for a more lengthy serialization). If they were to hypothetically return as a duo and the demand was high enough then I don't see why they can't give it as close of a natural conclusion as possible. It's a shitty situation but don't give up hope.

Allowing Matsuki to return sends a message that “being a sex offender is okay in our magazine as long as your series is good and sells well.” and would also be a bad look for them, especially considering they’re no longer in the days of 2002 where Manga wasn’t all that big internationally.
My mom is in her 60s, doesn’t even know what manga is, let alone Shonen Jump, and she saw a headline about this and asked me if I heard of it. I’m sure some Japanese fans would be disgusted, but internationally Shonen Jump readers would absolutely HATE this.

Also, most ppl are pretty disgusted by sex offenders, so i don’t think it’s right to assume that Usazaki would even want to work with Matsuki again going forward. I hope she finds a new work, it takes off to be even bigger than Act-Age and she never looks back. So even if Matsuki were to return years later she’s too busy with her own success to even consider working with him again

I’ve seen many people who at the very least are extremely uncomfortable with how the Watsuki situation was dealt with. And that isn’t as bad as this, so you’re definitely right about that.

For me I wanted to revisit Kenshin before his situation(I only watched the Kenshin anime when I was like 8. But I no longer remember much). But as soon as it happened I refuse to even look through the manga.

I usually have no issue separating the art from the artist. But my only exception is when said artist has done something that involves harming children(or supporting it). For me and a lot of ppl that’s one thing I can’t skip over to enjoy your work.

I can actually see Jump taking this approach, looking how they handled the other two situations. This would mean AA getting cancelled and Matsuki getting his punishments (whether it's jail or whichever punishment he gets). Then in a few years once the situation isn't a big topic anymore, Matsuki is out of jail (assuming he goes to jail) and when Usazaki isn't currently working on anything else, the series can get concluded in another smaller magazine, so it doesn't get much attention. Especially because it kind of seemed like the arc after the current arc would've been the final arc anyways. So it could be concluded in maybe around 50 more chapters.

Not that I think it's the way it should be. IMO, Matsuki absolutely shouldn't be able to return. But seeing how often sexual crimes in Japan don't end with the perpetrator landing in jail , I wouldn't be surprised if Jump takes that solution. It lets them finish the series at some point in the future when people have forgotten about the situation.
