It seems most likely that Cracker just created structures like bridges to assist him in battle:

For example, if it was Galdino or Perosperos, it wouldn't be strange at all if after fighting for hours, the floor was covered with the substance they produce.

With only two paramecia to go off of I doubt he has a knack for it.
There's a lot of paramecia that veer outside of the scope of "changing the environment", or at least that would be a weird way to awaken.

Like, does Moria change the environment into shadows? How does Vander Decken's work? Or Kanjuro? Pica's fruit literally lets him become a golem and control the whole environment anyways, so what's his awakening?

I'm thinking paramecia have more than one way of showing 'awakening'. Luffy's is likely turning the environment to rubber, because that's an easy one. Some of the ones I listed are a bit harder to imagine.
Pica can only manipulate existing stone. His awakening would have the same effect as Doflamingo or Katakuri.

I guess that's true for Pica since Dressrosa is a giant piece of stone, but I don't think that Vander Decken's fruit will have anything to do with the environment, or Moria, or Linlin. Like, does Big Mom turn the environment into a soul? Does Apoo turn the environment into music? Or Rosinante, who just creates silent zones, or Law, who creates a room. I think not all paramecia have to do with environment manipulation / creating more of their paramecia.

I think that the DF awakening of Paramecia Producers and Paramecia Transformers should impact their environment as it would be an extension of their abilities outside their normal range which is their own bodies:
  • Paramecia Producers use their bodies as plants for their own elements: Doflamingo, Katakuri, Mr. 3, Magellan, Cracker
  • Paramecia Transformers alter their own bodies
    • Temporary Transformers alter their body at will: Jozu, Mr. 1, Baby 5, Buffalo
    • Permanent Transformers have their body always altered: Luffy, Alvida
For Paramecia Specials (Big Mom, Kuma, Law, Mr. 2), the DF awakening should upgrade their special abilities to grant them extended Special powers:
  • Kuma - repel intangible things (pain, fatigue)
  • Mr. 2 - change the bodies of other people
  • Big Mom - manipulate the Souls of other people
  • Pudding - alter the history of objects and change their fate (broken objects can be repaired, modified objects can be unmodified)
  • Viola - read the mind of objects and thus understand their purpose/essence (Poneglyph can be deciphered)
As a summary, all DF awakening should grant additional abilities in top of the normal DF powers. They are not to be mixed with advanced DF techniques that rely on the mastery of DF normal powers. For example, Luffy’s Gears are due to Luffy’s mastery over his normal powers which is to have a rubber body - it does not rely on awakened powers outside his normal powers (rubber body).

It's possible the awakening of more fruits will be random, and the author will just make up stuff.

However, based on what we have seen so far, it seems there should be a clear pattern, as Luffy could tell Katakuri was doing the same as Doflamingo right away.

From what we were told, awakening affects the environment. More specifically, what the fruit does to their bodies, now applies to the environment. It's like if all objects around the person ate the same fruit.

Based on that, abilities that require direct contact (Pica, Moriah, Vander Decken) now would affect any person or object around. This would be consistent with Gild Tesoro from Film: Gold. In Kanjuro's case, he would be able to bring to life any drawing, not just the ones painted by him.

Perhaps we should focus on the names. A Paramecia transform a Human into a "X-person". It could be a "rubber person", or a "string person". Awakening creates a "X-environment".

Zoans are different, they just become super strong. Based on that, Logias may be something entirely different from the other two types.

However, I suspect Logia will be the same as Paramecia:
  • Katakuri's ability is identical to that of a Logia, except for being a man-made substance.
  • Crocodile has the ability to turn objects he touches into sand, which is unusual for a Logia. Crocodile proudly claimed to have mastered his ability, and was the first character to mention awakening in the series.

Dunno about cracker being awakened... His ability is to clap and create crackers which he can manipulate so I am not sure of how that fits into an awakening. If he awakens then he could... turn his surroundings into crackers? But if he could then there should have been way more soldiers than we saw. We should have seen things actually turning into crackers.

To me the main issue here is that awakening's actual nature is unclear to us. Doflamingo framed it as extending his abilities beyond his body but that clearly does not, and cannot work, for all abilities. Zoan awakenings are specially strange in general and do not involve the user's surroundings turning into animals.

And take luffy or buggy... Would luffy's awakening involve his surroundings turning into rubber? How is that helpful? I suppose luffy could bounce around and bounce his enemies but it's not exactly necessarily useful. Or buggy.... would get the ability to split things aroud them? If he can control them then its more or less telekinesis. If we go by the non cannon awakenings then perhaps something that makes sense is that buggy would have greater range for his ability to work with...

What non cannon awakenings are there? Are them from fillers?

Bullet. From Stampede. Allows him to have a greater range.

I think turning the environment into rubber could be useful for Luffy in a lot of ways. Think of how he defeated Cracker by using elasticity to suck him in, and then shoot him out at a high speed. Also, if he had enough mastery he could probably form rubber fists from the ground to hit his opponents remotely.

Edit: I think in general though, that Doflamingo's "awakening" style is not imaginative enough for Luffy. When it comes to Luffy, Oda goes the extra mile with creativity for his particular abilities. While I think "changing the environment into rubber" makes sense, it's pretty boring, and I suspect we're going to see it done in a rather unique way with respect to Luffy.

Other awakening I'm curious about is Brook. He's able to remove his soul from his body for espionage purposes, and he's able to reign over Big Mom's homies other than Zeus / Prometheus / Napoleon. Not sure what awakening could offer him, though.

Welp, yeah, where else would you get non cannon stuff? IIRC there was also a movie that featured an awakening (and movies are also poorly animated filler).

I guess there are also non cannon fruits in videogames. I remember that in World Seeker there was even an Iron Man.

It really depends. Luffy does not have the ability to actually manipulate rubber. So for what you mention to work out luffy's awakening would have to allow him to transform his surroundings into rubber AND also allow him to manipulate said rubber from a distance. Otherwise his ability just turns the world into a bouncy house of sorts. Which could be useful in some ways of course (say, tactical bouncing) but it's not exactly broken either. It's far less useful than katakuri's or doflamingo's awakening.

For brook... maybe being able to drag out people's literal souls from their bodies so that they can roam around as souls for a while? As in, not lifespan or shadows. Or perhaps if we think of the underworld's chill as the true nature of brook's ability then his ability would allow be to harvest the chills from others...

On the topic of Luffy controlling rubber, can anyone explain to me how Luffy's punches in G4 actually work?

I've disliked his power ups since the Doflamingo fight because I stopped understanding the logic behind them. Usually Luffy needs a logical and superhuman amount of strength to stretch himself by punching with sufficient power, but in G4, his arm just randomly makes 90º turns at random points and homes onto the target without losing any of its speed or power despite the illogical switch of momentum.

Is there an explanation for this that I have failed to grasp or did logic really go out the window for him?

There is no explanation that would make sense in the world of physics that you and I know, as to why Luffy's arm can turn, extend, and continuously accelerate simultaneously.

Yeah Katakuri's DF is the weirdest one in the series in that it's a "special paramecia" but basically that means a Logia.

I think Luffy potentially is just not well explored in his own devil fruit; similar to what Crocodile said about having a disdain for people who can't use their abilities properly.
Katakuri actually PRODUCES mochi, which allows him to regenerate his body like a logia, as well as create those weird donut punches.
Luffy doesn't "produce" rubber, though.. culverin sure as hell makes it seem like he's producing rubber in Gear 4. It doesn't make logical sense for him to be able to stretch like he does. His arm would be millimeters in diameter by the time it hits his target.

That's a shame, to me at least. I know it's fantasy and all but even in fantasy there should still be verisimilitude in how their world's physics work and some explanation for us, even if unrealistic.

Last time Lucci explained G2 to the readers but Doflamingo wasn't able to explain anything before he went down.

I don't think there is any specific logic behind luffy being able to have his punches move around like that. The sharp turns he makes make no sense in regards to muscle anatomy at least. Maybe it is related to gear 4 incorporating haki and using said haki to manipulate his own elasticity? That would explain an increase potency to luffy's attacks though it doesn't explain sharp turns though. It's just muscles bending in places with no joint for no reason. If luffy can do that then he shouldn't even need gear 4 for it.

To me luffy's fruit is weird in the context of mastering it. Because... there's very little to actually master about it. Luffy kinda just is rubber. He doesn't activate or deactivate his fruit and luffy's techniques are just a variety of punches. His fruit does not exactly give him techniques or abilities to master in the same way as others do.

I don't agree with that framing of katakuri's ability. Logias don't heal because they can produce their element. Logias in fact do not have any capacity to heal at all. The fruits simply make the substance of their body untouchable without haki. Or sea stone I suppose. I would argue that katakuri works the same way.

Culverin's stretching actually makes sense IMO. Luffy has shown the capacity to stretch his limbs potentially hundreds of meters. If anything with gear 4 he stretches less than he does with other gears in general. With gear 3 luffy is able to inflate his fists to dwarf shirahoshi and even then stretch them hundreds of meters from where he is. The issue here would be luffy's muscles bending in places where there is no joint. Nothing we know about about luffy's devil fruit or haki justifies that.

I basically said the same thing you did, unless you mean you disagree with his classification as a special paramecia. The difference Katakuri has from a logia is that he has to consciously predict where an enemy will hit him, which makes his fruit exceptional only in the hands of extremely elite fighters such as himself (or Luffy could probably make use of it now).

Logia with the exception of that scene where Luffy rockets into Smoker seem to be able to unconsciously be able to let things pass through. I think the scene with Smoker existed only for comic relief, and was worth it.

I meant specifically the bit about regeneration, basically logias do not regenerate or heal in any way, shape, form or context. And producing stuff has nothing to do with it either. I don't have issue with the special paramecia classification. Also, I would maintain that katakuri was able to do the stuff he did with haki because he functions like a logia. It's not that his haki allows him to act like a logia. Since his fruit functions in an identical manner to a logia he can use his haki to make holes in his body an pretend to be intangible even against enemies who are haki users. And luffy of course can't exactly do that. Because luffy is not intangible. With his fruit he could be capable of extraordinary dodging feats but he can't let enemies just pass through him.

I’m not really sure what you mean about the regeneration/healing. I never said that logia or Katakuri can heal.

Katakuri has regenerated parts of his body on numerous occasions, though. It’s not healing. He just recreates his arm with Mochi.

I could very easily picture Luffy performing OP tasks with an awakening granting his rubber-body abilities (stretching, inflating, bouncing) to his surroundings.

Think back about Marineford battle:
  • Imagine Luffy in place of Aokiji jumping towards Whitebeard’s tsunamis and stretching them back onto the pirate fleet.
  • Imagine Luffy in place of Marco jumping before Whitebeard - the air suddenly starts stretching with Kizaru’s lasers which stop their course in mid-air and bounce back to the Marine forces.
  • Imagine Luffy stretching one of Marineford side tower over the plaza to protect the pirate forces from Akainu’s lava punches - "Gomu Gomu no Marineford Migawari".
  • Imagine Luffy stretching the entire Marineford wall, applying Gear 2 on it, then releasing it to beat down all the Marines behind it - "Gomu Gumu no Jet Bullet Wall".
  • Imagine any of Luffy’s Gears applied to buildings for attacks.
I think he would be more impressive than Yonko or Admirals with his awakened abilities considering
  1. He would not turn the environment into formless matter but manipulate the normal environment at will like his rubber body
  2. He could potentially not only block any attack but send them back to any target
I really hope Oda will deliver such an amazing awakening. Luffy at least deserves them for the final war of the manga.

That's all contingent on luffy being able to turn the environment into rubber AND also be able to manipulate it at will though. Luffy currently has zero.... rubberkinesis abilities. At least when katakuri and doflamingo used their awakening manipulating their mochi or strings was already something they could freely do. And sure, if luffy has rubberkinesis it's easy to see how an awakening would benefit him.
