Honestly didn't expect less, been saying for days it would do similar numbers to the previous trio, and right on, same numbers as Roboco and Magu but of course in 2 days less. Really hoping this stops the axe trash talk over a series that has hit Bottom 1, when the magazine has 2 of them going for 4 and 6 volumes respectively, not to mention that both HSF and OBO are getting the same exact placements too.
Good numbers for Undead and Ayakashi, but still a shame none won't chart in Oricon. This is what we get thanks to KnY and JJK covering it all, and it was kind expected given Kimetsu was reprinted this week and Jujutsu has backlog enough to go on.
It's supposed to be a newbie ranking but yes, it's also over Shakunetsu no Niraikanai, but not included because of what I stated earlier; same thing with Ayakashi Triangle and Burn the Witch!
Even though I don't have the data I more or less remember the top volume sales of MHA before anime and that was 277K while charting. It's peak was around 700-750K while charting and as a yearly possibly more. Neverland went a bit past that and I think it did 800K while charting once during it's backlogs but none have had a boost of above 40K per week for all it's volumes consecutively like JJK or Kimetsu. The only one that I do remember achieving this was Shingeki.
JJK's pre anime sales were ~200K while charting, correct me if i'm wrong, and now the backlog pushed the volumes to ~600K-800K already and it shows signs of increasing.
Ah, these Phantom Seer sales are going to make the cancellations in coming months quite interesting. We've still got to see what Our Blood Oath sells, but most seem in agreement it'll be out the door sooner than later, and Moriking and Agravity Boys feel like/make sense to wrap up in single digits as well. Once those three are gone you've got a bunch of newbies that sell around the same, then some have better average rankings than others, but so much could change in the TOC in the weeks until then (like Magu-chan getting 3rd last week).
I'm glad this is perhaps giving Phantom Seer a lifeline, though now that it might be comparable to the standard of the rest it just makes the process of elimination more uncertain. I think if anything it highlights that Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin is in the worst spot sales-wise, especially considering it's semi-veteran author.
Happy for Phantom Seer! Huge fan of it, and ending up selling (at least slightly) better than Magu-chan and Roboco is a nice thing to hear about.
Unluck got a nice boost again, and it's slowly making the name for itself. Not yet at the hit numbers, but it'll come there soon enough.
There are a few factors to consider here that may only be solved when we have week 2. It is indeed a surprising number considering the estimation is pretty much almost the same or a little bit lower than Volume 1 Oricon data, but we could argue this is due to the number itself is an estimation. Wouldn't be the first time a Shoseki number is lower or higher than the Oricon one, but of course, we'll have no way to know this since it won't rank in Oricon, so it's just arguing in circles.
I'm relying here on it being able to pull its backlog of Volume 1 on weekly when not even Undead was able to do so, and the fact that it may not be frontloaded and may show bigger increases in following weeks.
Like I said this is all theorizing, it could just perfectly stall at the same numbers Volume 1 made or even decrease, which would be disappointing and surprising but still wouldn't put the series at any risk, imho. We should just wait and see how it progresses during this whole month.

I see, thanks for your explanation. Like, the common sense would tell me it is supposed to grow based on the backlog, but the estimations aren't backing it up here. Hopefully, Week 2 will make up for any inconsistencies or theories being tossed around.

Incredible news for Phantom Seer, Jump finally got a hit with a GFC winner, and also Kaijuu 8 getting reprints when his initial print was probably the highest for a fist volume this year (not counting spin-offs) ... definitely a monster
Next serialization round should be straightforward (it´s just a matter of whether or not Agravity Boys and OBO get axed with Moriking) but the one after that is going to be pretty interesting. We have 4 series (Niraikanai, Roboco, Magu and Phantom Seer) with first volume sales that would have assured them at least a year of publication if they had started one year earlier (see Agravity Boys). But with no veterans to take the fall, some are going to be cancelled.
Currently, it seems Tamura is first on the chopping block, but second volumes will give a better indication. Magu´s will be released on January, and the rest on February.
Really happy to see Honomieru Shounen sell well and get reprints going straight to bookstores, expecting to see it jump to at least the middle of the ToC in upcoming weeks. Feels like I hit jackpot this year with both my favorite newbies (Mashle and Honomieru Shounen) surviving. The axe situation is going to be interesting now that we have another newbie that clearly sells above the rest which sells almost the same. The opportunities are narrowing down for the next round of serialization. Good stuff for Kaijuu No.8 as well, I remember how there were worries that it would tank despite it being insanely popular online, but it was a surefire hit, the kind of hit that probably receveid anime proposals from the get go.
Kimetsu no Yaiba 23 getting reprints sent out on two days in a row is just too ridiculous lol. This is obviously because of holiday season, which tends to boost sales naturally but with the first print being 3.95 million and reprints going out in 2 days, this will easily add up to make it either cross or get close to 5 million in the near future. But obviously the 3.95 millon first print was the better choice.
