I used to think the SxF covers were kinda boring, but this is a really nice easter egg.

is it easter eggs to have a thematic consistency?

11 is Kaijuu, 12 is Neverland 13 is World Trigger 14 is Kaguya, 15 is Golden Kamuy 16 is Dr STONE
congrats to Kodansha for managing to get 2 series to break the Janpo combo:XD:XD

GIGA: experts on giving covers to Jump hits that ended a while ago. I can see Chainsawman being Spring cover though.
the cover selection isn't random, it's getting the cover because of the movie
Chainsaw man will get he cover if they have a reason for it
this Seraph of the End doujin doesn't looks very good

Nak: "I guess I will re-serialize The Promised Neverland as long as I can"
again, this isn't random Neverland shilling, the anime comes the next season and the live action movie is tomorrow

Unfortunately just because Mission: Yozakura Family managed to survive and grow to a safe place in the magazine doesn't mean newer series right now will have the same opportunity. With this issue we've now had seven veterans end in the past seven months, whereas in a standard year most/all of those endings would be from newcomers or mid-tier series that had plateaued.

With Chainsaw Man and We Never Learn now ending, there's a lot of series that could be cancelled even if it seems like they're not doing terrible in sales and would be in a decent place were it a year ago. Unless we get a slew of U19 serialisations for the year none of the series mentioned are safe from the axe anymore.
i think yozakura is very underestimated, even with low sales growth, it is still growing and this is something to be valued.

And as you said, jump lost 7 veterans. You can't cancel a manga like a phantom seer that sells 15K in 2 weeks, it would be a very bad strategy

Yozakura Family is in a good place now. It's showing growth in sales and its TOC rankings are much better than they were a few months ago, but it definitely came at an ideal time to be published (similar to Agravity Boys). I'm not worried about that.

The situation we have right now is four 2020 series all selling around/just above 10k for their first volumes and at the moment that's considered safe, but if that's the lowest bar for not getting cancelled and multiple new series are reaching that point, then it just means the bar is raised and even if something sells around that mark it's still in danger. It might not feel fair but until we see how second volumes trend everything below Ayakashi/Mashle/Undead Unluck could be a tricky spot depending on how well received the new 2021 series are (though I'd be willing to bet that Me & Roboco and Magu-chan have the best chance of survival thanks to their solid TOC placements).

They could cancel PS for the series that replaces it could sell 40K in 2 weeks.

That’s the strategy they’ve been doing for the last few decades.
I’m a fan of both Yozakura and Phantom Seer. But, as discussed a few pages back, holding on to these series that are barely selling past 10K first has the magazine feeling more stale and unexciting than ever

Except there aren't a lot of series coming out selling that much, much less more. And it's certainly not for a lack of shoving out new series. If anything, the last year or so has been a good time for good series to actually run and get some actual mileage instead of being cancelled in 3 volumes just because they fell below the arbitrary Jump standard.

On another note, how does a series not having the sales growth you'd like to see causing the magazine to be stale or unexciting? Most of the series in the magazine are less than a year old. It's arguably the least stale the magazine has been in years. Sales don't 100% correlate with quality, so if a good series can sell 10k a volume and run for 100 chapters, that's a good thing. Doesn't make the magazine stale or unexciting at all, unless they're just genuinely bad manga being well drawn out (looking at you, Tokyo Shinobi Squad).

Chopper looks kinda weird. Everyone else fits really well with their partner.

Having a chair in every cover is thematic consistency.

Making them real-life chairs that you can recognise and look up is an easter egg.

Looking at the cover, is this the first and final time Yuiga got to be on the cover? Also not much difference between the sizes of the characters, guess we'll have to wait until, jeez, the Golden Week cover to get a better idea of what covers will be looking like going forward.

If every new series in the magazine is selling 10K+ in the magazine there’s no way that we’re gonna go an entire year with barely any new serializations and barely any axes. They’d likely just increase their expectations of what a new series should sell.

We don’t know what could happen with Phantom Seer by the time it get to volume 3. For all we know it could get substantial growth and become the next big hit. But it a little too early to celebrate the the series is somewhat a success, and is gonna last a year+ like Yozakura.

Yozakura is in a bit of a healthy space, NOW. It probably won’t be getting axed anytime in the near future. But the only reason Yozakura is still here and was allowed to survive so long is because it was lucky to come out at the right time.
None of the new series were exactly hitting. So it was just doing slightly better than everything else. Kimetsu No Yaiba was ending soon. Haikyuu was ending soon. Yoragi was ending soon. We Never Learn was ending Neverland was ending soon. Samurai 8, the series that Editorial was throwing all their coins into being the next big thing, flopped hard. I’d imagine editorial new pretty early after Chainsaw Man became a success that it was gonna be a short run. And then Act-Age unexpectedly ended.

None of the mainstays that are left are showing any signs of ending, so the current series that are only doing moderately well have the cushion of popular series ending instead of a low TOC placing, low selling manga.

It feels stale right now because we have so many series that are lasting 20+ chapters with little signs of growth and improvement.

And it honestly feels pretty lame that we’re looking at these first weeks sales like “OH NICE! 9000 copies sold first week! It has a chance”. Which is somewhat true. But we’re having so many series survive by barely crawling past the criteria, instead of having a Kaiju 8, or SxF where something comes out and we say “yeah! That’s a hit”.

Idk about you, but even if I absolutely loved Agravity Boy, I’d find it pretty disappointing following it for 50+ chapters while looking at its TOC placements and sales. At this point we know that it’s only surviving due to just being lucky. It’s only a matter of time when it’ll get axed. Its really unexciting following a Jump series that we already know will never be “the next big thing”, and won’t get any kind of anime, games, films, etc. itd be different if we were following this series in a much smaller magazine, but all of us here have certain expectations for a Jump series.

Will we comment the fact One Piece isn't even top 15? Seems like chilling OP just isn't cool anymore for the japanese youth.
We all know this would happen someday, but it feels weird.

I was surfing through wikipedia rabbit hole and something got my attention

remember this competition from last year??

turns out Jump hasn't forgotten about it
you know Mogu Mogu Mogyu from Jump Plus? that was the grand prize winner

not only have it gotten the serialization reward, it even received a short 4 episodes anime which already aired (in the style of Jimoto ga Japan) that somehow I never seen anyone mentioned

It's not representative, plus you can probably spam vote your fav series since it was done via twitter

Chainsaw man will get he cover if they have a reason for it
Gintama getting Giga cover together with all this semi final thing might very well hint what every gintama fan should be prepared for.

It's funny that J+ is the platform that had a couple of major breakout hits in the last two years in newbies with SxF and Kaiju 8.

Half the magazine currently only lives because of the overall state of the magazine ie lack of many stable big hits. This conversation would not be happening at the start of this year where we had Kimetsu, TPN, HQ!!, CSM, Act Age all running.
The only surviving established series are in the top 5 of the ToC. THAT's the state of the magazine.

Also, it's hilarious that the bottom half of the ToC is basically the same with a couple of shuffling around.

I don't think we should place too much faith in the ToCs. I stumbled upon an article about Torishima's time with Jump and he had this to say:
The first thing was that during those days I was in charge of a manga series called Doberman Deka, which was illustrated by Shinji Hiramatsu. It had already been decided that the manga would finish its run in a few months, as it was doing very badly in the reader popularity rankings. From my perspective though, I thought Hiramatsu was very good at drawing action scenes but he was really bad at drawing women. They all looked the same. He couldn’t differentiate the characters. Since Doberman Deka was an original story, it was decided to add a new character that would be a policewoman. Hiramatsu drew this new character but I didn’t like it at all. So I went out and bought a famous magazine called Myojo, this was a magazine all about actors and idols. That magazine also had a separate issue that covered the ranking of idols at the time. The number one idol then was Sakakibara Ikue, while she’s in her 50s now in those days she was very young and cute. So I thought this type of face might become very popular in the near future and I asked Hiramatsu to change the face of the new character to match this idol. After this, the ranking for Doberman Deka changed dramatically, from around seventeenth place to third.
However, if you look at the ToC positions, you would see that it never appeared to have gone into the double digits until chapter 57...
Since Deka doesn't have any TL's I can't tell you when exactly this new character shows up but I think that this change isn't reflected in the ToCs at all...
