Shueisha is trending on twitter. Accounts that shared, of all things, DBZ reaction gifs, manga panels, fanart, clips, (or any Shonen Jump IP) are getting zapped due to an overzealous copyright law that just passed in Japan. What makes it a ridiculous and embarrassing situation for most people is this tweet. fenyo_n is an official artist for Dragon Ball. His works can be seen on the mobile games Dokkan Battle and Dragon Ball Legends. An official artist hired and paid.

Japan’s conservative corporate culture never ceases to amaze me.....

I’m well aware of Nintendo (or Japan’s gaming industry in general) crackdown on unofficial tournaments with their IPs, but this is absolutely ridiculous. One of the biggest reasons why the animanga industry is so strong and is now considered part of global pop culture is the fans. That’s why you have doujin cons everywhere in Japan. They are one of the main lifebloods of their industry.

Biting the hand that feeds you indeed.

I thought Khara’s move was stupid the other day, but this is near Orange cheetos-levels of stupid. Yes, I just compared Shueisha to the orange tub of lard.

As one redditor put it, no wonder South Korea is replacing Japan’s pop culture hegemony these days...

EDIT: Caleb (MHA translator) locked his account too. I don’t know if this is related, but this is getting ridiculous. You’re going to copyright strike the guy who’s translating your manga? The guy who is also helping overseas fans capture the nuances of Japanese Language in his work?

What even the hell? Japan has been long overdue for a culture change in their corporations

The Wall
South Korea already kill Japanese boybands and TV dramas.
Japanese corporation are backward and forever stuck in their 80s mindset.
To be fair, zealous copyright rule is a trend around the world, with dumbass Twitch DMCA debacle and one Republican Senator proposed a law to jail people over DMCA.

Everyone are locking their accounts from what i have seen. Apparently it won't be only DB and OP for the next couple of days.

Locking accounts is kinda pointless since it's a twitter algorithm and not Shueisha themselves going around and striking content. So whether your account is locked or not, if you have content that falls under this copyright, it'll get taken down.

I propose we refer Shueisha as “Shoowaysha” (thanks Horikoshi!) from now on until they overturn this very seriously dumb policy.

It’s a tongue in cheek reference.

The upcoming arc in MHA anime covers My Villain Academia. The Meta Liberation Army, a hardline leftist group in-universe advocating for liberal Quirk usage has a lot of branches of society it controls, from general trade to politics and publishing. The publishing sector is in charge of their founder’s propaganda and just so happens to be a not-so-implicit reference to Shueisha, Jump’s parent company. Yes, Shueisha is being controlled by a villain group. “Shoowaysha” just happens to be the translated version of the reference.

I don't understand the indignation, the problem is that on this Twitter profile for the majority they pulled too hard with material that we remember was mostly stolen.

Of course now they will end up banning even the right people and it is certainly not the ideal method.....

Didn’t Togashi outright make shueisha a villain as well in HxH?

Fans are the main life blood of every media industry or am I missing something?

As of this writing, nothing on his account has been claimed (at least things he posted last Sunday) and as someone said making it private won't do anything

Well, I don’t read HxH, so you”ll have to forgive me not knowing.

Pretty much what you’re stating. I just put it that way because there may be others that I haven’t accounted for from the top of my head.

I don’t know either. I went to his twitter hoping to see what he’d say about this, and what he knows.

Problem is, it’s clear “Shoowaysha” has no idea how social media algorithm works. So, asking twitter for example to purge any and all content potentially infringing their IPs is just asking for trouble. Algorithm cannot understand or identify the usage of their IPs for memes, parodies and such. You even have major global outlets using their IPs for memes.

Supporting their doujin artists is good and all, but this broadly covering law are hurting these very same artists if their fanarts get striked down. They need to show and promote their artwork to sell their doujins.

He regularly locks and unlocks his account. I'm not really sure why but this isn't anything new

Is that so? I certainly hope we hear something from him soon. He may have some additional insight about what’s going on, and I’m hoping he’s willing to criticize the policy if he feels these are hurting the fans.

So from now on we will posting info from official accounts? How this will affect the thread?

Quite a lot. Jump needs to be more aggressive in their social media game if they don’t want randos posting information ahead of time. Part of the reason some series get noticed is because someone or some people talk about it, but Jump doesn’t have an official account for the series yet. This also extends to other, more niche magazines under Shoowaysha that could use the promotion from fans.

A fan posting a pic of a little-known manga series will do wonders. Just because Shoowaysha magazines don’t see much point in promoting a manga they don’t feel worth promoting doesn’t mean its fans feel the same. Viral-ness is a difficult thing to predict.

I mean, aside from posting links to fan translated one-shots and manga and maybe early scans of CPs, I doubt this affects the thread significantly.

Most anyway post @WSJ_twitter posts or other sources which either link to an official news article or are just text information. And usually whatever WSJ_twitter posts falls in the legal category.

You'll still get ToC and other info, most likely.

This just majorly affects anitwitter overall and other platforms like that.
