Think they should have gone with kids (TPN age) with the concept with Ame no Furu, would have been really cute and goofy to have kids trying to save Tokyo from Gummi Bears and Peeps with Licorice Sticks and Lollipops. And there'd be tons of comedy.
Late to answering this but sure I guess? He could go for another chance. I don't see his career being over despite how awful BK was & btw Nakano made the right move on not pushing the series (ignoring that popularity comment lol). Maybe one of the reasons Nakano decided not to push BK was because of Shimabu's comment of finding BK very challenging to create, which already sounded like a major red flag. Anyway, either Shimabu comes back to WSJ or goes to Grand Jump. He did Ring & finished off Takeshi in Super Jump and did a few one shots in Grand Jump so it wouldn't surprise me if he goes to Grand Jump.
As for changing/improving, I think he shouldn't shy away from attempting character writing and shorter serialization. His character writing can be pretty decent and underappreciated in some ways imo. I'd like to see him change how he does his coloring for the characters attire as he struggled for ages in that aspect. Perhaps Shimabu teaming up with an artist isn't a bad idea and looks more likely than Shimabu changing his ways tbh. I'm confident that someone like Matsuura or Hirano would team up with him in a heartbeat if they were given the opportunity but the real question is will Shimabu do it? That may require convincing from the editors or better yet Nakano himself.
Well this goes not only for manga but in art in general. Time has changed and you should flow with the mold to receive recognizable respect for the new work you put in. You can great your own thing in every way you want but this is just one example. If I make an kenshiro look alike manga now in WSJ, it won't survive. Point blank
But then again, it all comes down what ya love and what you are inspire. For BK author case his time is over, atleast he could make a bit of his dream come to for the manga he also truly wanted to create for ages.
If I give my own vision what he could do different
- A whole redesign for the mc (its just so ugly man..)
Instead of him calling him another "builder" which he diffently isn't, call him a guardian.
Give the mc another special route to be the guardian of the houses to set him on special mission to find mysterious minerals/wood for his bro
For his bro the author can go an little bit in depth how to make houses, dont make it complicated of boredom but just simple enough to grasp how it is build.
The power system is so old fashioned in an way it Flys over your head... so let's say we keep put the colors as power system, a good example would be from the webtoon beginning after the end but a bit enhanced
Yellow (based on heat/fire/sun/steam)
Yellow 1 heat (hand/feet,breath)
Yellow 2 steam (coffee setter, shovel, air conditioner)
Yellow 3 fire (ect ect ect)
Yellow 4 sun (ect ect ect)
Just some absurd ideas that fit the author idea/style
It's also something that everyone can use, yes it makes an individuel less unqiue cuz the characters with Yellow power has the same branch but it makes more sense in battles system.
There Is so much other ideas you can blend and copy but too lazy to write any longer.
"It failed because it didn't make enough of an impact! It's still a difficult time so please take good care, everyone!"
I wasn't sure if he was saying the manga didn't have enough power/strength or he himself didn't, but here's the original for those who can actually read it:

It pretty much confirms what is my impression about the overall reception, and Shima knows the main reason why failed, it lacked the impact that Toriko had in the long run, Build King wasn't hated or anything in the start, plenty of praise everywhere on jp twitter for at least the first 2 chapters where i followed the reactions closely, most saying it was super exciting but after a while the main complain was "it's not exciting", people just got bored, readers don't have a problem with Shima's art but with Tonkachi design that many just directly called " very ugly" and i agree that it was pretty weak compared to Toriko.
Shima's message is actually promising, because seems like he's aware of what went wrong, and can just change, there was a lot of potential in BK which shows Shima just need to be focused and knowing what he's doing, so he can deliver another popular series on Jump, i wonder what would've happened if he returned like Yabuki, with just a simple and popular theme, nothing out of ordinary and doing what he do best, in Shima's case a crazy battle shounen with amazing fights and a big world to discover, it would probably have performed at least better.

Am I wrong to expect Ame no Furu to be a full nonsense action? We know so little about this series...
I really like this kind of series when it's handled properly and just hope it doesn't go for the gore way.
