Wow I was not expecting a continuation of Bleach at all... I was thinking of Burn the Witch but this is some crazy twist with the Hell stuff. I guess that Hell Arc movie was canon. They will fight their old friends?! Awesome! That means Gin will be back too
I thought it was very good, and it seems we have some plot lined up. I doubt Kubo would stop at this one shot (in my opinion, it seems like they were testing the waters here). Honestly, I would be keen on reading Bleach if the story telling mistakes do not repeat themselves (and mostly, they don't force Kubo to axe it and rush things)
Nah he's just back to his old Zangetsu, prior to him reforging his two powers into swords. Don't ask me how.
Edit: ahhh yeah riiight, Ichigo's Hollow/Quincy powers were absorbed by Ywach, and his Bankai broken, but somehow his old-school Zangetsu still existed as the "core" of the broken bankai, so when Ywach broke it he still got jobbed by the shikai core. How or why it was old-school Zangetsu and not the newly forged twin Zangetsu is a mystery.
Any guesses as to why he was using OG Zangetsu? My two biggest guesses are:
1: Since it's just an anniversary one-shot (wink, wink), it's just an opportunity for us to see Zangetsu in it's most recognizable state. For the fans.
2: Living in Karakura Town with his family requires him to suppress his colossal spirit pressure, hence keeping his zanpakuto in it's faux sealed state is a safety precaution.

Well that was a really cool start to a sequel/mini-series. I enjoyed learning more about Hell in the Bleachverse, and based on the deceased characters all being given a title, seems highly likely they will make an appearance as enemies down the line. Really excited to see where this goes.

But... tsukishima rewrote the past so as to restore ichigo's powers and bankai. So... ichigo should be fine? I can buy him not having the armor from back then since that was made by the royal guard but his power should remain the same. For as long as tsukishima exists at least. Of course, his bankai was broken back then which should be a permanent issue. So... ichigo maybe is permanently in bankai?
After reading the chapter again have a few questions for the group and wanted to point out a few things:
- Nice to see Akon in the battlefield now since he's the lieutenant.
- Szayel had the same horns Ichigo did when he's in his half hollow form, could that be an indication of power source or just hell related markings?
- Does this mean everyone (and I mean everyone with the level three power) who died before will make their appearance again?
- Who do you guys think is the skull on the bottom panel from the second to last page?
- Any announcement when the next one is?

This makes little sense if you want my opinion, and I think Kubo decided to go with good ol Zangetsu as it became Ichigo's trademark at this stage (unlike his new Zangetsu version)
As far as we were shown, his mother wasn't that strong, since she was among the Quincys who had their power taken. So seems really unlikely that she would make an appearance in hell.

Have been reading it for a while now. Have to say, it has been an excellent experience. Currently I am past the Grimmjow fight with Ichigo, the bit where Nnoitra shows up.

But I'm gonna read into it too much anyway just because. Cos the Bankai he used against Yhwach was all about him completely merging his various powers, and then that was shattered to reveal the original model for Zangetsu. So that suggests this form of Zangetsu is still a full merging of his Quincy/Hollow/Shinigami powers - except, does he even have all those anymore? Yhwach stole something from Ichigo before he went off to destroy SS, but it was never even made clear what he wanted to take from Ichigo (my guess is he wanted access to Hollow + Shinigami power, but who knows). And the fact that Ichigo can even be in Shinigami form in the human world suggests that he lost a ton of power since the last arc.
Tbh I wouldn't be surprised if Kubo doesn't actually answer these questions at all, but it'd be nice if he did.
I was wondering that, but after re-reading it seems that the whole burial ritual is the thing that sends class 3+ souls on to hell, so any such soul that dies without getting the ritual just kind of floats around as reishi. I mean, I thought reishi was distinct from the actual soul. Like, reishi is matter, and the soul is something intangible, but this all seems to suggest that they're the same thing. Anyway, that's just an aside - the point is the ritual is what sends captains to hell. Szayel Aporro was presumably damned to hell because he sinned in his human life, like the serial killer Hollow at the start of the series. Will be interesting to see if any other Espada got the same treatment.
This also raises the question of what happened to Kaname and Gin, since there's no mention of them.

Depending on how accurate the ritual needs to be, they might be present. The number of arrancar killed during the war should be more than enough to meet the requirements, however, they were killed before Kaname and Gin. Kubo could easily fold them in using that as an excuse still.

True in Kaname's case. Gin was killed in SS though, and iirc no Hollows or Arrancar were killed near him. Also it possibly depends on if there's a reason for waiting 12 years for the ritual. I guess I could see Kira or Matsumoto quietly performing the ritual out of respect for Gin though.
