That's a pretty high ranking for Red Hood, even if with extra pages (which didn't helped all the other flops), i didn't honestly expected almost top 5, but well, first chapter was pretty well received everywhere so shouldn't be that surprising in the end, the real test start next week, but congrats.

Nothing really out of ordinary besides Jujutsu Kaisen having it's lowest placement in a very long time. Magu-chan color page seems like is for "popularity", still surprised on how many color pages the series gets.

I'm pretty sure there's no rule on this since multiple new series get extra pages around/after this point. It's the eighth chapter regardless so this is the first ranking, and 6th place is a pretty good spot.

For reference on others first rankings this year:

• Build King - 8th
• Sakamoto Days - 6th
• The Elusive Samurai - 6th
• I tell c - 8th
• WITCH WATCH - 6th
• Nine Dragons' Ball Parade - 9th
• Blue Box - 6th
• Candy Flurry - 8th
• The Hunters Guild: Red Hood - 6th

Nothing has ranked higher than 6th, and all those those are either newbie successes or at least very safe for now. Anything lower has already been cancelled or will be (Candy Flurry) soon.

Jujutsu Kaisen's ranking is way lower than usual, but no point stressing about it. HSF is jumping from mid to bottom recently and not the best of times for the Ayakashi Triangle/Magu-chan/Me & Roboco serialisation round right now. Hopefully soon we'll get confirmation on the new serialisations, I'd guess we'll only get two more series and one cancellation.

Red hood not ranked? Pretty weird, extra pages have always been ranked... and 6th place is very good.

There's really nothing special about extra pages placements, Kowloon got extra pages in the chapter it got axed at bottom 2, so isnt like Red Hood is that high because of the extra pages, but like said the real test is next week to see if will sink or not

I was only talking about series this year since they are more relevant to the state of the magazine currently. Those both did start excellently but it was a long time ago, even last year cancelled series like Moriking, Bone Collection, and Hard-Boiled Cop and Dolphin started at 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively when there were more free spots in the magazine. In 2021 it seems like 6th place for the first ranking is a good place to be and anything lower isn't.

Where did this idea that getting extra pages on the first ranking means/changes anything? Series like Our Blood Oath, Build King, and Nine Dragon Ball Parade as well as most newbies at some point get extra pages, whether before or after they were ranked, and if they were ranked it's more often than not when they are already low or in the bottom of the magazine by that point so it doesn't mean anything special and it shouldn't affect the rank at all, whether it's with chapter 8 or chapter 18. Only way we wouldn't know by now is if it had a colour page for that particular issue.

There's nothing to indicate this shouldn't be its first ranking, so I think most people will/should consider it the case. Either way, we'll find out its real trend for the series in the coming weeks.

Red Hood showed incredible foresight into the minds and wishes of its potential readership by introducing the perfect character design at the exact moment it needs to achieve worldwide success and discussion, by all measures it's a genius move generating buzz to make it one of the more popular series in the magazine. Anime discussions must be taking place already at this stage with how things are going.

Or something like that, if I wanted to be as hyperbolic as you often are with series you like. Sounds silly, doesn't it?

The new character has clearly rubbed you the wrong way, and I'm not the person to advocate for ecchi in my favourite manga but it was barely anything compared to what One Piece, MHA or Black Clover do with their female characters. At least here we have a pretty varied (adult) body type. Sure, she's got certain horny people talking but she also has a memorable design, made a strong first impression, and serves a purpose in the story at the moment. Her existing isn't a cheap trick, and even if it were it's a smart thing to do when competition in the magazine is so tight and it needs to garner its own fans quickly, and doing it this way doesn't detract from the overall story at all.

If a busty female character is a tool for cheap positive sentiment can't the same be said for a hot Male character? Fujoshi are also a big paying crowd.

If nothing else, that is an extra push. Otherwise it'll be a chapter with a normal amount of pages. Every series you mentioned now got an extra pages at some point (not on their first rank) and got axed afterwards. I don't think that extra pages on the first ranking is a good sign.
So as I said - definitely take that "6th" place with a pinch of salt. We'll see where Red Hood is placed next week when there is no additional pages.
