Ground Rules for the Power Level Discussion Thread

As always, please follow the guidelines set by the Forum Rules that apply across the board.

It's important that discussions from a current chapter are spoiler tagged until 24h have passed from an english release.

  • For the sake of constructive discussion, where and when possible please quote/ source any information you provide. Particularly when it comes to conversations carried over from other threads.
  • Avoid passive agressive posts, sly remarks or baiting/trolling. You can certainly have fun or disagree without it being at someone's expense.
  • Only use anime examples that are canon and as means to provide clarity to pages in the manga. Any other anime material is otherwise non-canon and should only be referenced if it can be proved that the mangaka had approved it.
  • We will strive to avoid repetitive discussions and any extensive battle topics will be guided to the Davy Back fight to existing threads or new ones can be made there.

As of now these topics are shelved due to repetitiveness or until the manga can present us with material to further discussions:

  1. Shanks v Mihawk
  2. Hand to hand fighters > Swordsmen
  3. Zoro > Luffy
  4. Zoro v Sanji
  5. Is Smoker a top 30 character?
  6. Mihawk's rank within the story
  7. Law having CoC currently.
  8. Katakuri > Kaido/Luffy/Etc.

If you wish to continue any of these discussion and remove it from the list, you will need to provide manga material as proof. If there's also anything you think we've covered numerous times, let me know and I'll update the list.

This is the only warning there'll be regarding these ground rules, anything no adhering will be removed. So please just check your posts before posting them.

You can say they have equivalent durability and attack power, not there being a huge gap in either.

Katakuri was able to fight for 12+ hours (tanking G4 hits), King lasted less than 15 minutes and had a glaring weakness.

His block mochi also showed his mastery of CoA.

King had no advanced forms of haki, nor a conqueror. He really has nothing to hype him over Katakuri
Katakuri doesn't have durability equal to King, not even close.

Katakuri was beating Luffy up for most of those 12 hours and was left leaking by a base kick from Luffy. Regardless of the trick, King was shrugging off blows from Zoro and brought him to his limits in a fraction of the time it took Katakuri for him to do that to Luffy.

I was being generous, King has significantly better durability.

I just flat out disagree. Whe he doesn't have flames his durability is garbage and he is going to need speed to tag Katakuri so his flames will be down alot.

He still lost within 15 minutes. Nothing you say can really change that

I was being generous as well.

You can argue his "flames on mode" is more durable but he'd lose quicker to Katakuri.

King doesn't have the stamina, clearly.

Nah King is being overestimated. His defense is great... i guess. But that doesnt put him above any of the YC1s. What is so great about a great defense if you cant defeat anybody. Katakuri would be able to get around that Defense with his block mochi eventually. Kata has better feats than King.
King has no Advance anything.
His attacks are rather dull, the only good attack is his Dragon Fire.
His speed isnt that great compared to Kata's FS.
The fire is like whatever.
What base kick from Luffy had Kata leaking? Kata endured G4 attacks better than Doffy did. Some people say G4 Boundman > Kata but I disagree. Kata had his guard down and Boundman took advantage. But as soon as he got his composure, Boundman had no effects on Kata.
So this "bas kick" has nothing on Kata.

Nah, it definitely is.

We've already seen Kaido fight her, and it looked by no means that he'd low-dif her. I don't care if Kaido wasn't going to kill her; you can be serious and not bloodlusted. And I saw you and some other people use the 'she knows how Kaido fights' excuse, like Kaido is a complicated fighter, and that would give Yamato a big boost. There's also one thing that point ignores; if Yamato knows how Kaido fights, in this case, the reverse is the same. Kaido also knows how Yamato fights.

Her squaring off with Kaido one on one is definitely better than anything Marco has done. For the longest Marco's biggest feats were squaring off with Admirals evenly. Yamato's feats have her square off with an even stronger character and actually damage him and have a back and forth. As for Law and Kidd, I'd probably swap them with Yamato IF they actually beat Big Mam.

Advanced COC's potency is crazy. We've seen how it went in the Oden flashback during Roger vs Whitebeard. And even outside of that, it's the only move that has dropped a dragon type zoan in one hit. Page One was shrugging off hits from Raid Suit Sanji and post Udon Luffy yet got one shot by Big Mam with ACOC. It's potency is crazy, when mastered.
Let's wait and see. The next arc will give us a more accurate picture.
She'll likely join the strawhats, plus we will see Luffy using advanced conq on characters who can be damaged normally

Marco actually fought BM for a few chapters too IIRC, with the fighting ending with each going their separate ways, with BM commenting that she doesn't want to waste her time and energy putting him down. And he immediately went onto 1v2 King + Queen for hours, while spending energy healing up thousands of soldiers.
Law and Kid collectively already are Yonko tier. They've forced BM beyond her limits. The BM they're facing is on juice,

I'll admit I was wrong about low diff though. I re-read the fight, she did better than I had remembered.
She can give him to low-mid diff, mid diff if we're pushing it. I think you have to be admiral tier to push Kaido to any further difficulty, don't think she (or anyone among allies except Luffy) is admiral level.

Nah, block mochi isn't getting past King's defence mode. No way at all.
Block Mochi was stronger than G4 Luffy's punches, but not by much. Beginning of Wano G4 Luffy did zero damage to Kaido.
King can no sell attacks from rooftop Zoro. Rooftop Zoro's attacks can damage Kaido and BM considers them threatening enough to warn Kaido to dodge. None of which are possible for beginning of Wano Luffy

King is above Katakuri in pretty much all stats, except CQC (due to future sight). The dude is a speedy/offence type ancient Zoan.

King's attack power is around same level as Zoro's, prior to him getting advanced conqueror's. Zoro's attack power was definitely above Katakuri's, prior to getting advanced conq (considering his feats rooftop).
King is above Zoro in speed/CQC as well, and is physically stronger. King was also faster than Sanji in his raid suit.

Katakuri vs Luffy was significantly more impressive, because:
- it's a Luffy's arc fight
- it happened when the characters were significantly weaker than they are currently.
We can't just look at their performance and judge them with the same standards.

A fight between King and Katakuri will be extreme diff. They are close in overall PL, with each having their own strengths.
Katakuri's future sight allows him to time his attacks well to land hits on King in his offence mode.
King is speedy enough in his offence mode to land some hits, even though Katakuri will obviously dodge most of them thanks to future sight. King has good AOE with his fire attacks, and AOE counters Katkuri's fighting style with future sight (there is only so much you can tweak you body).

Is it fair to compare Luffy's opponents to Zoro's? I don't buy that because Zoro fights with swords, and swords often take out their enemies in one or two blows, whereas fighting with fists is harder to win because blunt force isn't as deadly, usually. King's durability may be very high but not against swords, while Katakuri might get one or two shot against swords if it hits.

I think Zoro would probably be one of the few who can't lose to swords easily, other than Mihawk's. Another reason why I also hate the whole "emperor commander!" tier thing, it totally disregards the strengths and weaknesses that each commander has, and it's possible that Smoothie could beat King, or Jesus could beat Beckman or whoever's Shank's first commander or right hand man (though I think Shanks' crewmates are the strongest?).

Why? I agree some go overboard with boxing people into PL.
I agree with you that OP is also more about matchups and Devil Fruits, than just combat stats and haki.
Like, IMO Doflamingo wins against Zoro all the time, if they start the battle far enough. Though people mostly consider them in different tiers.

But "commander level" is a general way for people to categorize characters who operate at a high level. With " YC1" special among all of them.
I don't see an issue with this at all.

I just flat out disagree. Whe he doesn't have flames his durability is garbage and he is going to need speed to tag Katakuri so his flames will be down alot.

You can argue his "flames on mode" is more durable but he'd lose quicker to Katakuri.

King doesn't have the stamina, clearly.
Even without his flames, he took a hits from Zoro when he was using ACoc, that's better than what Katakuri has taken. Not to mention, most of King's blows were taken in base, full and hybrid King's durability shits on Katakuri's even without the flames. But why am I discussing King with no flames, he has them.

Nothing to change, Kata got hit like 7 times and went down. His durability isn't fire.

Characters weaker than King have fought for days, I'm not going to sit and say because he lost to Zoro quickly he can't fight for long LMAO. Katakuri is not injuring King in defense mode, heck, he's going to struggle to harm hybrid King regardless if he's in defense mode.

But this isn't a King vs Katakuri fight simulation. You said he's got nothing on Katakuri in any stat, that is a lie. I don't really care about an actual King vs Katakuri matchup right now.

Whatever you think about Katakuri’s stats the duration of his fight with Luffy had nothing to do with his endurance, it was Luffy’s

They only fought for 12 hours because Luffy was completely outclassed for 11.5 of them and kept getting up despite taking a beating. He couldn’t lay a finger on Katakuri for the vast majority of their fight. A regular kick and a bound man punch until Katakuri stabbed himself. Then Katakuri took a few hits from Snakeman and fell.

If anything Katakuri actually fell in the same amount of time as King once Luffy/Zoro could actually start hitting them.

Kata got hit a lot
Remember luffy attacks and launches a crazy amount of attacks cause he does barrages ( literal Gatling guns in style )

The current Zoro who just defeat King with ACoC is way above the Luffy who took down Katakuri. Comparing the stats of both commanders based on their performances during their fight with Luffy and Zoro isn't justice.
This is just a way for fans to start another "Luffy vs Zoro" by comparing their opponents. Which actually isn't possible especially with opponents of different arcs.

Just so you can understand :

- Give WCI Luffy to Current King and you'll have a fight that could take days with Luffy having zero chance to defeat him or even damage him
- Give Current Zoro to WCI Katakuri and you'll have a fight that would end in 1 or 2 strikes after Zoro finding a way to bypass Future Sight

See? You can't compare those 2 Commanders from those fights cuz the level of their opponent is far from being the same.
Doing so is just too BS (especially from Luffy's fans)

People say "Mochi can't get past King's defences"
My response "doesn't need to. Katakuri can drown King in it"

Katakuri is a versatile fighter due to his DF. King hasn't shown any of that. Like many said above, King's durability is only high with flame mode on.

Katakuri has aCoA (block mochi), aCoO (future sight), CoC, and DF awakening.
What does King have as of yet? Until it's proven he has awakening or something.

Also, it's a fact King went down in 15 mins when Katakuri kept Luffy occupied for 11 hours. Using FS still takes energy, got barraged by G4 BounceMan, then got hit by base Luffy for while Luffy was learning FS and then last bit of Snakeman.
And this is the durability of a guy who hasn't been punched in decades.

The time could be Oda being inconsistent, but it is out there for me to exploit

Still it is inconsistency

Oda has made some fights last for hours or days to add drama, but it doesn't make sense when characters of similar strength are taken down in seconds

I.e. Whitebeard vs Akainu lasted for what, 5 seconds? Whitebeard got has of his skull melted, but fractured Akainu ribs

By comparison, Aokiji vs Akainu lasted for 10 days. Should we conclude that Aokiji attack power is 100,000 less than Whitebeard, while he has 100,000 more durability than Whitebeard?

I've mentioned this before, but fights lasting long hours/days exist for the hype and demonstrate great feats of endurance, but we cannot expect Oda to do that for the Strawhats because it's just not feasible. Well, I wouldn't say it isn't feasible, but Oda would most definitely have to change how he'd plot the arc. Because, the way things are now, I see that type of fight largely devolving into a mix of Sanji vs Queen and Luffy vs Cracker. A lot of jumping around and a lot of off-screening. And that sounds like a mess pacing-wise.

If Oda was to make it work, he'd have to have the crew that isn't fighting those types of opponents play a larger role in moving the plot forward, while the main fighters get their fights started early on. Those fights would have to be in the background for chapters on end until they finally get the focus back. Then Oda would have to give each of those fights a flashback to show how the fight progressed over time until we finally reach the present-day, climax, and conclusion.

That being said, I wouldn't use the time frame of Kata's defeat and King's defeat to compare their endurance. It's highly likely that King, and even Queen for that matter, could fight for days on end if the plot required. And you know why? Because Jack did it when the plot required. And we know he's weaker than the other two.

Now, in terms of durability between Katakuri and King, King should be the most durable one. Aside from Lunarian heritage, he's an ancient dino Zoan, which are known for their extreme durability. Ignoring the fact that Oda conveniently had King not using his DF anymore during the final moments of Zoro's fight (which is another issue entirely), I'd say the intent was clearly to show that he's a particularly tough cookie to break, which was largely the All-Stars' claim to fame. On the flip side, Katakuri's durability was never highlighted to that extent, rather it was his Haki Mastery and, to a lesser extent, DF Mastery.

I agree with everything you said.

Just frustrated people are bringing absolutely raging points like "Katakuri cannot hurt King". So I am just bringing BS points as well. Feels good to be Moe and Lady Vadoos sometime.

From what the manga shows us, Katakuri has superior skills to fight against someone like King. But I am not going to rate Katakuri as the best YC1 either, just that King is a bad match up against Katakuri.
King's advantage is that he has no fighting style and is random. And who will that be ineffective against? Katakuri
King is fast. Who counters that? Katakuri (he casually dodged Snakeman and even black mamba)
King's weakness, who can find that out faster than Zoro? Katakuri
Who can keep dodging attacks for hours? Katakuri
Who can kill King even without being able to harm him? Katakuri by drowning him in Mochi (I remember Katakuri doing it twice to Luffy).
King's AoE attacks. Who can dodge that even before King attacks? Katakuri.
King's teeth blade throws away Katakuri's trident. Oh, only for Katakuri to stretch his arm to get it back.

Katakuri cannot be defeated without being able to disrupt his CoO. He is just that OP.

Basically this. Katakuri and King requires very different "strengths" to be beaten.
Against Katakuri, Luffy simply grew to specifically counter Katakuri's style

Luffy developed enough future sight to counter Katakuri's combat style exclusively. But this doesn't mean he is overall as strong as Katakuri, because Luffy's future sight doesn't synchronize with his DF the same way Katakuri's does (with his logia-esque body)

Beginning of Wano Luffy will have zero chance to beat King. I've mentioned it in one of my posts here.

In a hypothetical match versus King.
Beginning of Wano Luffy would lose mid diff to King if he decides to be in offense mode. King would be outright faster and stronger than Luffy in offense mode, the only mode Luffy would be able to deal damage to him in beginning of arc. As well as tankier due to inherent tankiness of ancient Zoan.
Or King could simply cheese and remain in defense mode when Luffy is in G4 and wait out, leading to a no diff win for King.

Also, the fandom war agenda is 100% transparent lmao

Still it is inconsistency

Oda has made some fights last for hours or days to add drama, but it doesn't make sense when characters of similar strength are taken down in seconds

Yep.
It is beyond me how people don't get it at this point.

All this "they fought for days or tens of hours" is just Oda's way of hyping things up, or saying characters involved are close in PL.
Basically, it's a narrative tool for Oda more than anything else.

Another thing is that Luffy vs whoever is always going to be a grueling, lengthy fight.
Cause that's what Oda wants for Luffy.

lol at invincible Katakuri….Didn’t Sanji make him miss with his godly CoO….Luffy was countering CoO naturally from the beginning…Katakuri got frustrated because Luffy would dodge or simply not give up…CoO doesn’t allow you 100% accuracy…or did we forget Luffy dodged Katakuri spear countless times before he developed his own aCoO

King vs Katakuri will be close match.

They both have means to deal damage to each other

King his better brute stats, but Katakuri can dodge most of King's physical attacks due to future sight. Plus his future sight will allow him to time and land attacks in King's "offense" mode
King is pretty fast, and will manage to land some physical attacks even through Katakuri's future sight due to his speed. King has good AOE with his fire, and AOE counters Katakuri's fighting style with future sight (there is only so much you can tweak your body)

I would give the W to King in this matchup because of his AOE.

But there are matchups Katakuri would win, that King wouldn't. Like, I think Katakuri can win against Zoro, because future sight + mochi body is great against Zoro. All of Zoro's strong abilities, except dragon twister I suppose, have no AOE

Each have their own strengths, and are overall in same tier

Katakuri cannot be defeated without being able to disrupt his CoO. He is just that OP.
Basically this.

Katakuri and King have 2 abilities that make them stand out among other Yonko Commanders.

Katajuri with FS and King with his flames.

Of those 2 abilities, the one more easily exploitable are King's flames. In Katakuri's case it took him underestimating Luffy, who he saw as insignificant and basically called Luffy dead mid fight because he drown him in Mochi. Katakuri is not stopping midfifht against King

People love to throw the word agenda around without address the facts

Not only does King have a more exploitable Weakness:

Katakuri has an especially more hardened form of CoA in Block Mochi

Katakuri is faster or on par with G4 Snakema

Katakuri has Advanced CoO

Katakuri has Conqueror's Haki

Katakuri has AWAKENING

Katakuri has the stamina over King

Let's go ahead and give King more attack power. His stats still pale in comparison to what King has shown. He would need to sacrifice the one ability that makes him fast enough to even begin to tag Katakuri... his flame durability

King has no advanced forms of haki. A more exploitable hax. And doesn't have CoC

I'm not saying this makes him weak. But I am saying it makes Katakuri stronger than him.

Exactly like why are comparing this???

anyways this is my the ranking of yc1
ben beckman
Marco
King
katakuri

they are all same tier but all not on the same lvl of strength
