With a four week dry spell in play I thought it'd be a worthy discussion around a hot topic that's relevant to the latest chapter, specifically. This could age like milk, so feel free to call me out if this doesn't pan out. I'll own it.
One of the common posts seems to be that Ryokugyu is going to get low-diffed by Luffy. Some of this is built around the reasonable, objective information that Luffy is currently surrounded by strong fighters. Some of it is based around Kaido's perceived strength, and the fact that Gear 5 Luffy was able to contend directly with Kaido and eventually defeat him. We also have bits of information we've learned since Luffy's awakening, such as the Gomu Gomu not only being a mythical zoan, but is actually proclaimed to be the most ridiculous power in the world. It brings joy to the desperate, and snuffs out the wicked. We very much saw this come to fruition with Kaido who some might argue as the most wicked villain we've seen; Not quite evil in the same way as Doflamingo but extremely evil none-the-less.
I just want to give a gentle reminder that Admirals have not experienced humility in the series. We have not seen moments where an Admiral was essentially knocked off their "high horse." We've seen the likes of Moriah, Doflamingo, Kaido, Big Mom, and numerous commanders of the Yonko embarrassed by Luffy and his allies. Admirals are feared. The title of Admiral nearly ensures the safety of every Tenryuubito (save for Luffy, but he's Joyboy / Nika, after all, and disregards logic). There is only one other name that holds a similar weight behind it, and that's the Yonko. Even the Yonko are stretched too thin to aid anyone in their territories. We had the New Fishman Pirates form right under Big Mom's nose, and Barto going around handing out Luffy flags in Shanks' territory.
So in some appreciation of the Admirals, let's take a look at the OG Admirals. Kizaru, Aokiji, and Akainu.
Kizaru
From the get go we knew he was bad news. Luffy had punched Charlos, and when tasked with dealing with it we were shown this panel:
His very intro features him casually riding a cannon ball to SA.
Kizaru seems to be the least ambitious of the original three as he didn't put his name in for the Fleet Admiral role, and seems to submit to Akainu's authority. That does not mean he's not a fierce opponent. When he shows up on the Archipelago he is extremely casual. Kizaru's ability allows him to defy natural physics in a way that no other ability seems to. He adds mass to light. Obviously the Supernova were nowhere near the Admirals at this point, but in general the series hadn't fleshed out power levels.
He was also able to contend with a Yonko:
Aokiji
The first admiral we met in the series and also the first person to create an incredibly hopeless situation for the whole crew. The only reason they managed to escape was due to the indebtedness Aokiji felt toward Luffy for handling Crocodile in the Marines' stead. He's the man who travels the worlds' oceans by bicycle. Capable of freezing giant gulfs for weeks at a time. As the first admiral we were
Robin introduces them as "the ultimate military force of the navy." They can enact the Buster Call, essentially erasing entire islands from existence. Aokiji's ability has been a landmark for shows of power in the OP series. From the moment he was introduced, the first thing he did was freeze the ocean, including the Sea King that was about to attack him:
It's no wonder one of his debut chapters was literally titled "The Ultimate Military Force."
After nearly annihilating the SHP Aokiji pedals off:
In Marineford he stopped the tsunamis that Whitebeard created with the Gura Gura no Mi, and managed to turn Diamond Jozu into an amputee. The man has allegedly joined the Blackbeard Pirates after losing a 10-day long duel to Akainu. He's an absolute monster.
Akainu
The monster we love to hate. Akainu was notorious before current OP events when he ordered the boat carrying innocent Oharans destroyed. He is the extreme version of "Absolute Justice" to contrast Aokiji's own sense of justice. He's a very no-bullshit kind of guy. From nearly annihilating Coby, to tricking Squardo into dealing a devastating blow to Whitebeard, to murdering Ace and nearly annihilating Luffy in the process.. We've never seen someone utilize their destructive power to the level Akainu does.
It's heavily alluded to that he has future sight, as he's able to materialize his body in such a way that Marco's attacks do not harm him.
He spent the majority of Marineford contending with the "boss" that is Whitebeard.
When the Blackbeard Pirates attempted to strike a deal with the navy, the mere sight of Akainu caused them to flee, despite outnumbering him.
We all know Akainu is insanely powerful, so here's some of his best moments:
Akainu's debut attack in Marineford:
After murdering Ace, he blasts a good portion of Whitebeard's face (and "beard") right off:

In general the OG Admirals were a force to be reckoned with. They even managed to use their hands, with haki, to stop the tremors from destroying the execution platform holding Ace:
The NG (New-G) Admirals
Fujitora
Like others, Fujitora had a somewhat unorthodoxed introduction into the series. He was being swindled by some of Doflamingo's troops who took advantage of his blindness, despite the fact that his other senses were so honed that he was able to accurately sway the odds of the game at hand into his favor. Fujitora blinded himself to due to the sadness he experienced at the hands of all the evil he'd witnessed. He lamented his blindness when sending off Luffy, wishing to see the kind face of the protagonist. Fujitora is more in line with the ideals of Aokiji over Akainu, and currently banned from setting foot inside any military base, despite holding such a high position.
Fujitora controls gravity itself with his ability. We've seen some pretty insane stuff at his hands, and we've never seen him go all out.
He took advantage of the situation in Dressrosa by choosing not to act out against Doflamingo. I have no doubts that he'd of made short work of Doflamingo, as we can watch a fairly effortless attack from him:
In one of the most badass moments in One Piece animation, with a single swing of his sword, Fuji brings a literal meteor down.
It's worth noting that Fujitora gained his position in an open draft which required participants to prove they had the strength worthy of an Admiral. It's very likely this was orchestrated by Akainu as the new Fleet Admiral.
Fujitora weaponizes all of the rubble in Dressrosa that was created from Pica and Birdcage:
Green Bull
The newest Admiral to be introduced is one of controversy as he strikes readers as overconfident. First seen much earlier we learned that Greenbull hasn't eaten in three years, really living up to the ridiculous Admiral hype:
We know that the Admirals faced the Revolutionary Army at the Reverie, and whatever happened there, it does not seem that it was favorable for the RA. Both Fujitora and Green Bull seem to of survived with minimal injury (a bandage on Fuji's head).
We also see yet another Admiral with a very unorthodox method of travel in Green Bull:
For whatever reason, Ryokugyu decided to head to Udon and deal with the remnants of the Beast Pirates first. Our first "battle"-ish view of the Admiral is him berating Queen as too far beneath his station to cause him any real trouble. Granted, King and Queen were likely not at full power (almost definitely), but the fact that this man has the confidence he does can't purely be narcissism.
In a last panel I will show here, we can see how this single person completely changed the landscape around Udon:
---
I guess I will close with this: We haven't really seen any Admirals suffer a huge loss in the OP world. I'm not saying that it's not coming, but I would be very surprised if it happens in the form of a low diff. Admirals are at the peak of the four stages of competence, and they know what they know and they know what they don't know. That is to say that an Admiral would be very painfully aware of their limitations, as well as their abilities. It would be very odd to see one taken out, even in the current situation, with ease.
Things to keep in mind:

Things to keep in mind:
- We know nothing about Ryokugyu's ability other than it's plant based
- We know that Luffy is not well suited in battles where trickery is of concern
- The element of surprise is strong
- Ryokugyu should be well aware of the strength an individual who can take out a Yonko would hold. I highly doubt he's suicidal. He did duke it out with the RA, which included Sabo
