Boring> Annoying so yes I am siding with Gry here.

Astolfo is terrible. He is not even that cute and the trap jokes weren't funny. If the delivery is bad there you already fail as a trap character. You will never forget someone like Rukako because the "Daka otoka da" is funny and he is also actually cute. Hideyoshi from BakaTest is also a good trap character but when I think of AstoIfo I remember someone who was kinda nonchalant but took a liking to Sieg and was insufferable from the beginning to the end.

Dealing with the trio of Sieg, Astolfo and Jeanne was really something... Mordred and Shishigou should have been the MCs .

I'm not going to say your opinion is wrong Demon... but it is.

Here's where I think you may be misremembering some things. Astolpho is not just a joke character. There are funny things about her. But what is no joke is that, even in the grail war with everything going on, she's the character that just tries to do the right thing. I'm not going to say she's as deep and nuanced as the likes of Mordred. She's not. Astolpho isn't self reflective in the way Moedred is.

Instead she's this character the does the right thing with a smile. Even if she's facing something awful or going to pay some horrible price because of it. No complex thought. She just... does it. That's who she is. She's not particularly strong or smart but that doesn't stop her from facing whatever comes with that smile.

I am sorry Jammin I can't help but hate this character. Trap jokes being bad are one thing, but he is extremely annoying. The worst of the trio in Apocrypha IMO.

Astolfo is the perfect servant for Sieg, because they're both terrible characters with trash motivations. I don't mind Astolfo when he's cheery, I just find every serious moment with him insufferable, the fact that he's so devoted to Sieg(worst character in the show by far) for no real reason annoys the fuck out of me too.
Hideyoshi is also a much more entertaining trap.

Our beloved Roman waifu. Leave it to Fate to turn a tyranical Roman emperor into a quirky and sexy girl. I feel like people are really divided on her. Some think she's great, while others find her annoying. Heck, "Nero pandering" is pretty common among the crowds, because the writers give her a lot of love and probably a tad bit too much sometimes I feel like agreeing, but in general I just really like Nero a whole lot. Extra does focus quite a bit on how and why she failed as an emperor, and that under her cheerful front she does regret how things ended. But Fate Nero without a lot of bravado wouldn't be Nero, and in moderation it's fun and/or funny. On another day she might have made it on my list, but alas

That aside, she's also become THE christmas meme lol.



Wouldn't be surprised if more people know her from that than all the other Fate works combined Considering she's supposed to be an awful singer, she did pretty well :3 Probably don't need to talk about her looks, she's great~ And on that note, here are some pics:

FGO's main girl, and she more than deserves that spot. She's basically the second protagonist, growing immensely in his stead. Originally very insecure and inexperienced with human interactions, she eventually becomes a strong emotional pillar for the MC. And if you ignore the fact that this game is basically full of waifus, I don't think anyone deserves an actual relationship with Ritsuka more than Mash. Just like how he saved her once, she saved him when it mattered most (and the world with it). They're like two lovebirds already, and even the story isn't making a secret about it

That being said, she does some really epic stuff during the story. For the sake of spoilers I won't say what, but it does feel like she's keeps growing both physically and mentally. She doesn't get too many fights, but there's proof enough that she's plenty strong. Here's a good example from the Camelot movie, everyone can watch that because it's thankfully not much of a spoiler:



Just look at how she's throwing around that shield <3 Really unique fighting style, I like it. I don't even need to mention her character design, it's great.
Besides that I don't want to get into too much spoiler territory in case people wanna check out FGO eventually, be it the game or the anime, but I'm glad and happy she made it into the Top 20

And here he is. Sooner than I hoped, but later than I expected. To the seven other people who nominated him, you have my heartfelt thanks
I'm honestly not quite sure where to start, but I think I'll say that Shirou is even more divisive than Nero lol. From my experience though, it's almost always anime-only people who dislike him, because there he comes off very bratty and even stupid a number of times. With a character like him, his inner thoughts are essential to understand what makes him tick.

Because of a huge trauma in his childhood, he kinda puts everyone else before himself, and would gladly sacrifice everything he has if that means saving another. It's definitely not normal or healthy, but it's fascinating to see how he changes through the three routes (Fate -> UBW -> Heavens Feel), and how his layers are slowly peeled back.

From fully embracing his hero side, to understanding his foolish dream but still following it, to being faced with a harsh reality where he's forced to make the hardest choice of his life. Reading all that and seeing how he changed was one of Fate/Stay Night's strongest points to me, but it's not something you can properly portray or emulate with a single anime adaptation.

Honestly, there's so much more I could say. How he embraced Kiritsugu's wish, how he always worked on bettering himself, how he came to understand his foes (even Kirei), how he's been a role model to both Rin and Sakura, and so on and so forth... But this is getting way too long already for those who don't really care about this guy lol. I'm fully aware that many prefer Fate's numerous waifus, or more mature characters like Cu etc. but I'm always a sucker for characters who go through a lot of growth. And I like idealists I guess

With that out of the way, he also has the best track in all of Fate. One of my personal highlights is when we get a new version of "EMIYA", because those are awesome almost always Just listen to this and tell me it's not good (yeah, I'm sure someone will)



I should also mention that I used two pictures for him because some people mentioned Fate/Kaleid Shirou. I agree that he's especially badass in that series, the author did an amazing job with that. For me it just shows his potential again, and what he can be. It mirrors a lot of what happens in Heavens Feel, but that only makes it better. If you haven't read or watched the series, it's worth your time for that alone :3 I think for some who haven't read the VN it makes it easier to understand the guy.

Finally a pick of mine, actually two. Not surprised Nero reaching top 20, but a bit surprised at Shirou not making top 10, or at least top 15, well hes close enough.

Nero is too low this is unacceptable. How can you even dislike this girl.

Shirou is very confusing to me as an anime-only. Sometimes I like him, sometimes I find him very confusing(especially in the HF movies). He is a good supporting character in Prillya and yes his other self there is pretty badass.

I agree about his track. It's amazing. I thought he was more popular than that.

Love Nero but not enough to make my top 10. Nothing but respect for those who put her higher though. May the "umu" be with you.

Mash on the other hand. I wish I liked her more than I do. She's an ever present part of FGO with some pretty good story parts. Her personality though is so... flat. She's nice. She's very nice but aside from her beating the crap out of Lancelot papa and her big moment in Solomon. She fades into the background most of the time. So as much as I wish I could say otherwise, probably top 30 at best for me.

Emiya my feelings are complicated on. I would say one of the best parts of the OG Fate is how it takes him from a pretty lame shounen cliche (Stay Night route)...

.. into a sort of portrait of survivors guilt. And how it takes the selfless mindset and shows that it's to the extreme where it becomes a method of self destruction (Unlimited Blade Works route). There is just a lot to dig into there, and I fully respect how much @Nii likes him.... however. I can't deny that I think his servant form as Archer is too edgy for me. I like normal Emiya. Edgy-miya is a bit too chunni for me to take seriously (also the bad english with his noble phantasm never gets easier to hear). That said, in general I do like the character and how many layers they put into him is quite something. That alone makes him pretty impressive even if I wouldn't vote for him.

I forgot about Mash and I really like her character. This should have been a top 20

 

[Rikudou King]

Ah, Astolfo, fate's main trap! I love that as crazy as he is, he's still more sane then his cousins. Definitely would have been number 11 for me. Really looking forward to seeing more of him and the other paladin's of Charlemagne.

Ereshkigal is just so pure and adorable. I would say that she's better then Ishtar, only because she's not portrayed as dumb. Her recent showings with Osakabehime in becoming a youtuber just added icing on top.

Oda Nobunaga is pretty impressive with all the versions she has gotten, and all the events she's gotten to star in. The servant versions of the Nobu Nobu were the greatest things ever. I will say, as much as I like FGO Nobu, the version shown in the Redline manga is quite cooler and shows how much of a threat a serious Nobu can be.

Nero is definitely one of the few characters I really would have added to my list if I could of made the room. I like how much lore she is given despite not being really part of the main series, and the fact that she's a literal bride makes her a top tier waifu. Really like the interactions she got in EXTRA, and her status as the Whore of Babylon was a cool development, especially her more adult appearance.

I forgot all about Mash, and now I really disappointed in myself...

My enjoyment of Emiya seems to depend on what series he's in. I like him in FGO, Prisma Illya, and the other side series, but kind of dislike him in the original Stay Night. Kind of moot on him in Heaven's Feel and Unlimited Blade Work. Not sure why it's this way. That said, he's not a bad character, and as far as main characters go, he would still be pretty high on the list.

 

[Seven777]

Shirou is the most well written character in fate, his character development spans so far that it reaches across different timelines lmao. That said, the only version I can even remotely tolerate is his heaven's feel iteration.

The Fate version is the most insufferable piece of shit I've ever seen, literally everything I hate in an anime main character. He's wrong about everything, Saber is right about everything, he's infinitely less competent than in any of the other routes, yet somehow has the biggest ego of any other route. I really cannot stand him, dude should've just shut the fuck up and listened to Saber, he had no business even suggesting half the things he suggested to her.

UBW Shirou is somewhat better, but I'd root for Archer in literally every scenario. In the end vs Gilgamesh Shirou is pretty great, he's had a lot more development at this point and his twisted motivations are much more clear, but it took pretty much the whole arc to redeem him for me, making UBW the second route was definitely the right decision.

Heaven's Feel Shirou is easily the best, I'd even say one of the best anime protagonists I've seen. He fights smarter and harder than in any other route. He humbles himself and realizes how useless he is. He gains a clear, rational, tangible and most importantly, relatable motivation, giving up his entire "I want to be a hero" bullshit in favor of fighting for someone he loves. I feel like the anime screwed his character development a bit on this side, they never really go into the fact that he tossed aside his dream of being a hero for Sakura's sake. B
To top it off, Heaven's Feel Shirou is an absolute beast in combat, so strong that he can solo Saber Alter 1v1. He's exactly how I'd imagine a young Archer would be.

Overall, great character, but I also hated him for %70 of my time with him, so yeah.

Miyamoto Musashi

I hope Jammin and Sam won't kill me over saying this, but I'm not a big Musashi fan. She's absolutely fine in my books. Cool, funny, good design... but that's where she stays at for me. That's not to say she doesn't get some really epic scenes, like in Olympus (you can look forward to that Jammin), but I guess she isn't exactly my type of character, even though I couldn't quite tell you what holds her back for me from being great. Still, a cool swordsmaster always rocks, so I can seal the appeal.

Important to notice that she's a parallel universe Musashi lol, so it's not impossible to get a male version eventually I would say XD With that I'll leave you with some pics and am sure others will say a bit more about her in my stead:

Okita-san daishouri~ What originally started as a joke character called "Sakura Saber" became one of the best Servants in Fate :3 Awesome design, and a really fun mix between being quirky, funny, and badass. One second she coughs up blood and laughs about it, in the next she slices of her enemies head~



Helps that she's voiced by Aoi Yuuki, who always does an amazing job delivering her punch lines and all around attitude.
Also one of the rare Servants who actually isn't 100% healthy, as her legend caused her to be summoned as somewhat sickly. Ofc she still does amazing stuff all the time, but there's always the actual danger of her suddenly breaking down for a moment and coughing up blood, as mentioned above. And yet despite that she's always cheerful and in high-spirits (when she isn't trying to kill an enemy).

What I like most is her contrast, though. She knows she's a murderer and killer, and is absolutely merciless when she knows she has to cut someone down. She doesn't feel good about it, but she does it nevertheless. These two conflicting sides make her a really interesting character to me, so I'm glad we got a manga where that's a huge focus :3

Abigail Williams

Ah yes, Abby. Our little eldritch girl : D I'm not a loli guy at all, and while I find some of her outfits a bit too daring, I can't deny that she's got a very good design. That she serves a vessel for an eldritch god is some peak Fate shenanigans, I love it. Sure didn't expect to see Lovecraft stuff in Fate, of all things

Besides that, she really is just a normal young girl. Kind and sweet normally, she's obviously much more evil when she turns into the Outer God's vessel (but she's still in control). There isn't too much more, but that alone is hella cool in my eyes. Their take on her legend was a great idea.

Before I come to the pictures, I think this little video does show her appeal, and also one of the best tracks in FGO (around the 1 minute mark). Near the end you can also see her Noble Phantasm in FGO, which is also among the best of the game in my eyes. Please give it a watch, it's nicely done

Musashi outside of the top 10. That is unexpected. Look I'm sure Sam over his many tours as a waifu warrior has told everyone why she deserves better and I will leave it to him to continue to do so. As for you @Nii, I'll decide how disappointed I am in you after seeing the totality of your list. Though I will say who the hell would want a male Musashi? Dimension hopping Musashi from a parallel universe that has long since vanished is the best Musashi!

As for Okita, she's great, but she belongs around were Nobu is for me. But I didn't care for Redline and dropped it so I guess that's the difference between our takes. I like Nobu slightly more but to me they belong right next to each other. The Guda Guda champions.

Now Abby. Abigail Williams is great, has a terrific visual design, and happens to be the star of one of my favorite FGO stories, if not my favorite.

Explaining who and what she is isn't easy but I'll take a shot at it. She comes from a time loop set during the Salem Witch trials. Where a demon creates psuedo servant Abby in an attempt to get her, a young puritan girl who can serve as a Silver Key, to open a door to summon Sut-Typhoon(aka Yog-Sothoth from the Chutulu mythos). A scary outer god essentially. The experience has left her with a fragment of Sut-Typhoon within herself (the scary demony bits).

Now here is where things get really fun. Because of the events of Salem Abby absorbed massive amounts of mana. As a result, unlike most servants who fade away without mana. She can exists without a master forever as a stray servant. As a result, in the Fate universe, Abby is still out there able to travel anywhere she pleases through space, time, and even dreams.

So there she is this lonely, and sometimes a bit naughty, girl from tragic origins who loves pancakes. Wandering through the void of space and time with godly powers and a fragment of an alien Cthulhu god inside her. Functionally the priestess of Sut-Typhoon. She really deserves her own anime, I'd watch the hell out of that..

@Nii you found good Abby art for your post so I'll "partially" forgive you for not giving her points.

Actually Musashi IS Fate isekai. Just into the Fate universe as opposed to the other way around. So as soon as she gets an anime we'll be there. And she needs her own anime. And her own Alter. So we can a goth-y looking red haired Musashi so Sam can build a literal shrine to her in front of his house. Which would be the only reasonable thing to do, really.

Abby is more like Chutulu Doctor Who. And who wouldn't watch that?
