About BB, can't dispute this ranking is deserved. I haven't played the games she's from but in FGO she's so weird and entertaining as this A-moral rogue AI girl. She wasn't on my list because I only really encountered her in FGO where she shows up twice in events. Where she still is great but it wasn't quite enough to kick anybody off my list.

Terrific post @Nii, you really captured the BB spirit. I see she hacked your avatar and mod thread as well.

She even hacked other places too, that little devil But on a serious note, really glad you liked it! It was a spontaneous idea tbh, and I thought I might as well just roll with it bc it fits perfectly for BB. I was looking forward to what Asako would say, but ofc she disappeared again

Isn‘t it a bit sad that the Alter version of a character seems a lot more loved than the OG version?

Nothing sad about it, they simply did a terrific job with her Alter version. There's still many people who like normal Jeanne as well, or who got more interested in her thanks to her Alter, so it's a win-win in my book.

Seems like he is a fan of Mapo Tofu? In Prillya he was the owner of a Mapo Tofu shop IIRC. Or was frequently seen eating it.

Yeah, he really loves Mapo Tofu Understandable I must say. Last time I was in Japan they served Mapo Tofu at the Fate museum and it was delicious

Shit, can't believe i forgot Kotomine. He's probably the best character in the damn franchise, I should have given him my 10. Like most characters in the Heaven's Feel movies, his characterization was shafted, his final fight with Shirou was kind of butchered too

Sadly agreed. They should've just added like 10 or 15 minutes to every movie, would've been more than enough to give Illya and Kirei the focus they deserve. As much as I like a lot of what they did with the movies, that they made Sakura the single focus wasn't a good idea. Guess they did it for otaku pandering perhaps, though I know the director is a big Sakura fan, so that played a part too most likely.

Haha worms, worms woman lololol. So funney. Now that this is out of the way, we can properly talk about her character, right?

[A little disclaimer at the start: Everything I'm hiding here is spoilers for Heavens Feel, so don't open that if you haven't read/watched it.]

I'm honestly surprised she's made it into the Top 10, considering her only actually big role is in Heavens Feel (and HA to some extent), but I guess the movies helped. I know Sakura is a tricky one for many. She's an extremely tragic character, suffering again and again in both Fate/Zero and Fate/Stay Night, so while I don't think anyone actually dislikes her, they dislike that she's too much of a punching bag, someone you're supposed to feel sorry and pity for. Believe me when I say I can understand this sentiment. It's almost ridiculous how one person can have so much bad luck and go through so much awful and horrible stuff.

Basically sold to the Matous by her own family, being forced to go through horrendous rituals, treated like shit and being experimented on by Zoken, and last but not least being raped/forced into sex by Shinji multiple times. Honestly this character screams tragedy.

That being said, I still like her a lot. For one you really have to respect her mental fortitude. That she doesn't break mentally for so many years is astonishing, and even late in HF it takes a lot of manipulation and Shinji ofc, to finally break her. And you can see that despite everything, she's still a cheerful and smart girl. Pretty sure she would have become an amazing mage if she had stayed a Tohsaka, but it is what it is.

Nevertheless, she endured and thankfully met Shirou. They both were a big support for each other, Shirou probably even more so for Sakura. To me they're almost the perfect couple. Two broken people who can find actual happiness together. I won't go into detail about Heavens Feel here, but by god do these two deserve to be happy.

Thankfully she has a lot of good times in Hollow Ataraxia and Emiya Family, it's always nice to see a Sakura free of her burden of the past. She even gets her moment to shine in HA as a badass mage, hopefully we'll get more of that at some point. She's cute, kind, determined, and most importantly a genuinely good person. It's okay if you think she's defined too much by tragedy, but for me she shines beyond that

Let's go with some fanservice for the start : D (this fight is the one that hooked me on Fate/Kaleid) The pictures were provided by the great Marmalade, and I think she especially likes Kaleid Illya, so I will say that she's pretty different from FSN Illya: She had a loving family raise her, who decided that she doesn't need to be a grail for some stupid Grail War, so she's more or less a normal girl without any baggage. She's a ball of sunshine you could say, with friends surrounding her. She's adorable for sure, but also has strong convictions that support her when the going gets tough. I almost wanna say she reminds me of Shirou a bit, just without any survivors guilt or trauma lol, just with a heart of gold.

Buuuuuut she's a more interesting character in Fate/Stay Night in my eyes. I'm honestly a bit surprised she made it so high on this list, because I feel a lot of people don't really know this Illya. She's not so different to Sakura in the sense that her main development is found in Heavens Feel (which the movies mostly ignore ). She's portrayed a bit like a psycho girl in the beginning, but if you look a bit closer it's mostly just her childish attempt to latch out and get attention.

It's pretty interesting, because on one side she's very mature and behaves/acts almost like an adult, but in other regards she's still a little kid. In short, she's another victim of another pretty crazy mage family, the Einzberns. These guys even kept Kiritsugu from visiting Illya after the events of Fate/Zero, so a lot of her anger is their fault alone. Maybe I'm getting into a bit too much detail here though

All things considered, she's another fascinating and complex character in FSN, and she gets some pretty damn great Illya-oneechan moments in HF. Her relationship with Berserker is also great. Just his existence alone kept hurting her, but they nevertheless grew very close to each other, and he became our princess' protector Lots of good things there, but I'll stop it here and give you some more pictures to look at:

Just kidding, glad to see Fate's best girl Illya being appreciated by you guys~ I don't really have a preference when it comes to Kaleid Illya or FSN Illya, they are two very different characters but still the same I'd say.
FSN Illya makes me sad, her fate has always been doomed from the start - But I love how she handles it. The best she can. Also her bond with Berseker is fantastic indeed.

I wish I could like Sakura more but I don't . I have nothing much to say about her. Kinda similar to how I don't hate Shinji or Zouken when I think about it.

Disregarding Prillya I liked Illya more in the HF movies but certain things like her situation after Iri and Kiritsugu disappeared and stuff were very vague. In the anime/movies the siblings relationship with Shirou isn't well established too IMO. Disregarding Prillya of course.

That fight in Prillya is the one which hooked me too. Also the way Illya says "Berserker" is cute!

It's probably just too difficult to portray in anime form. Showing Kirei and Shirou's philosophy and parallels through animation and dialogue would take a lot longer than 15 minutes if it were to be done well, if it can be done at all. Fate Zero did Kirei well over time with it's many episodes and even then Kirei was a much younger and simpler character at that time, as was his relationship with Kiritsugu. I don't think the movie could've done much better than it did, it really should've been a proper series like UBW, if anything UBW should've been the movies. Focusing on Sakura was likely just the easier and more vital aspect of the route to portray with their limited time and budget.

Illya and Sakura are good characters. Both characters I can see how people could really like. Not favorites of mine though.

Sakura gets kind of a raw deal. As Nii said there is a lot going on with her in heaven's feel but what I feel he's downplaying a bit is how little of it goes on outside of heaven's feel. Outside of that she really is treated largely as a doormat with little or no will of her own. Things happen to her and around her but she herself does little. Aside from some deredere bordering on yandere tendances toward Shirou there just isn't a lot there the majority of the time. Which sort of cements her for me as the third best heroine in the Fate visual novel. She's not bad, she just isn't what the other two are.

Illya I mainly know from the Fate/Stay VN where she is a very different character than you see her elsewhere now. Where she was basically a psycho loli with a crush on Shirou. Fate has definitely turned her into a lot more than that since then. Her appearances in FGO have showcased how far they've come with her, and improves my opinion of her by quite alot. Also probably the cutest panicking facial expressions in Fate.

BB is my favorite yandere, and like with Abby, her joining with Nyarlathotep increased my enjoyment of her. It's actually a fitting choice, given Nyarlathotep is the sole Outer God who's truly evil, with a love for toying and manipulating people. I liked how even when BB attempts to do something good, like save the MC from the threat of the Lostbelts, it involves her literally trapping them in a timeloop of suffering. Her relationship with the other Sakura Five is also interesting, her children who really don't have much love for her.

Kotomine Kirei was someone I didn't much care for in the original series, not because of his personality or anything, I just wasn't all that interested. Until I watched Fate/Zero, and somehow he grew on me. I love his relationship with Gilgamesh. I don't remember which of the side series, but in one of them he was like one of my favorite reoccurring characters. Wish we got more interaction between him and Caren.

If this list didn't involve the other Fate series, Jeanne Alter would have definitely been in my top five. It's really hilarious how a character who began as an evil version of a selfless hero quickly became a fanfiction writer and then a chuuni. It's also interesting how her relationship with regular Jeanne pretty much switched, with Jeanne bullying Jalter by becoming an overbearing "older sister". Another nice piece is her frenemy relationship with Saber Alter.

It's definitely due to her development in Heaven's Feel that Sakura grew on me. She really is someone who was able to endure things that would break down most other people, without becoming twisted herself. With all the suffering she goes through, it's not surprising that most of her servant versions have pretty twisted personalities. Love her relationship with Medusa, wish we got to see them fully be a team.

Illya is kind of a confusing character to me, given how both childish and mature she is in the main series. Obviously she's much better in her own side series. Her relationship with Heracles and Shirou is really nice, and even with Miyu is sweet. Her and Chloe on the other hand...

It's time for more Emiya, baby. Kiritsugu is our protagonist for Fate/Zero, and a really unusual one. While striving for a noble goal, he stops at nothing to achieve it, including hurting or abandoning the people he loves. If it's to save the many, he is more than willing to sacrifice a few. And thanks to how he treats Saber and ruthlessly kills his opponents, he doesn't come off as particularly sympathetic.

Still, eventually you see that he's basically been robbed of the people he cared most about more than once, and has since developed his own defense mechanism to deal with potentially losing even more. It's not that he's become apathetic, far from it, but deep down he's somewhat accepted that he will lose them too eventually. Basically he doesn't want to be hurt on the same level again, so he's made himself a thick shell.

The one thing that keeps him going is his wish to save everyone, for the world to be at peace, because he's seen war and conflict around him time and again. He's another character who's both "mature" for accepting that you can't save everyone without losing anyone, yet also childish in the way that he dreams for world peace. It's a pure, innocent wish most adults easily deem unfeasible early on, but this guy doesn't give u. Great thing we have the Holy Grail!!

Or not, because it ends in disaster. He lost everyone while achieving nothing... But in his desperation he finds a single survivor. It's what saves him and what saves Shirou. Little did he know that Shirou would eventually grow up to stop the twisted Holy Grail War for good. World peace might not be achievable, and it's true that ultimately he didn't achieve much, but I think you can't really fault him for trying.

Spoiler: The Beginning of the End

Watching this, I remember how surprised I was that we actually got a bad end of sorts. It's honestly just a lot suffering for everyone in this last stretch, Saber included But I'll talk a bit more about all that when we actually talk about Zero.

That being said, he's one of two people in what's possibly still the best Fate fight to date. Technically we've seen better battles by now, but the payoff for Kiritsigu vs Kirei ist just so great. It's been foreshadowed since the early stages of the series, and incredibly charged on an emotional level. It's like ying and yang clashing, with the stakes at their absolute max. It helps that it's pretty epic to see these two duke it out directly, with absolutely no holds barred. It's awesome on so many levels.

And it becomes even better with the knowledge of Fate/Stay Night in my eyes, because it has a similar payoff. Sadly ufotable didn't quite deliver the same level as Kiritsugu vs Kirei for that, but it was still great to finally see it animated.

It's mordrin' time! I'm sorry. Here she finally is. She didn't quite manage to beat her father, but it does fit very well with her theme of not actually wanting to surpass her. Mordred's character arc is among the best things in Apocrypha, and it's great to see her come to terms with the fact that she just wanted to be acknowledged by Artoria, and support her.

Granted, back when she was alive she clearly went about it in almost the worst way possible, but no one can deny that she didn't exactly get an easy father to deal with either

Maybe someone will be confused why I say "father" when I mean "Artoria", but let's just roll with it, okay? : D There's some weird shenanigans about how he turned Artoria into a male for some time and yeah, you know... the details aren't too important. They really stretched it a bit with this, but I guess they had to make it work somehow. Ultimately it doesn't really matter much, and Mordred is plenty badass and cool on her own anyway. Personally I found her kinda annoying at first, but the more you learn about her, the more sympathetic she becomes in my eyes. Didn't quite make it on my list though, prolly because the tomboyish brawler type isn't among my favs in general. Still, I must admit this is pretty adorable
