So I have some complicated thoughts about this... that probably only @Nii will be interested in.

First about Heavens Feel. Here's the thing. IMO, Nii is absolutely right that it being the most like Fate/Zero but I don't mind it exactly. Where I differ is in a more fundamental place actually. I know with the various anime, and for the purposes of this interlude thing, you have to divide the Stay, UBW, and Heavens Feel routes of Fate/Stay Night because that's how the anime are. But the visual novel was not built that way and I do not view them in that way.

What do I mean by this? Well, Fate/Stay Night, despite fans denial of this fact, was a classical eroge, which is essiantly a visual novel with sex in it. Which I read a lot of when I was younger. Now when people think "eroge" they often mentally jump to "nukige" which the more pornographic type with less story, which Fate was not. Why is this important? Well Eroge are stories typically with multiple routes each with it's own heroine. The branching point is either handled by following the story along a common route to a branching point and then making a choices that leads to various route OR set where you follow one heroine route and then the story begins again on the next heroines, etc, etc. Written in a way where you are meant to experience each. If that latter structure sounds similar, it's because that's what Fate/Stay Night was pretty much to the letter. Even if Fate is probably the best one ever written, fundamentally it is what it is.

It is one story told in segmented sequential parts with a different heroine each time.

This first is Fate or the saber route. It's a simple approachable tragic love story that explains the core concepts of Fate. With a protagonist who is a bit obnoxiously shounen in Shirou but aside from him it's quite good.

This leads into Unlimited Blade Works or the Rin route. Which jacks up the complexity and turns Shirou into a much better character by turning the faults in his character into something more interesting. As well as delving much deeper relationship with Rin, who stands out strongly in the first route as well. While continuing to build upon the lore.

This then finally brings us to Heavens Feel or the Sakura route. Which is sort of the culmination of all that lore it's built up in the previous two routes. It's the most "Fate" in the sense they it really starts to dig deep into the core concepts of the grail and all of that. Which is both it's strength and it's weakness. It is a very complicated story that relies on what was built in the previous route to even function.

Mmnn, still hurts to hear. 18 years after Fate/Stay Night came out, after all these anime, and he still says it like he has a mouth full of gummy bears. It's why a lot of people think it's "I am the bone of my soul". You'd think with just repeating that one line so often one of the other VA's would coach him up a bit. A lot of them speak great english.

The highest-rated Zero only character, not surprising at all and very deserved. Almost everyone likes or loves Broskander, a man among men I remember he was among most people's favs when the show aired back then, mine included. Kind of how you imagine a natural ruler - someone who's headstrong but also oozes charisma, who makes you feel like you want to follow him because he has both the passion and the abilities to make his dream come true.

On the other hand he's very direct, kinda brutish, and also selfish. But it's his flaws that make him a better character I feel. He's not just an ideal, but someone who feels like he's one of you, your king and a larger than life figure, and yet your friend who is by no means perfect. Doesn't hurt that he was one of the few characters who almost always radiated positivity in a show with a rather bleak mood all things considered.

The reason he changed someone like Waver so much is because he knows how to compel and motivate people, and shows throug his actions that he's not just talk. Nevertheless, when he's doing some of his grand speeches it's still pretty amazing. Watching this again put a smile on my face:



The thing is, he's a character I really like, but I like others just a bit more nowadays. Definitely would've been in my Top 20. I can understand why he might not be everyone's type of character, but for me he worked really well.

Fate's poster girl. Out in 5th place already... Would've liked to see her in the Top 3, but oh well

I would argue Artoria isn't just Fate's most known character, but also one of the most known characters among otaku, to a point where almost everyone knows "Saber" and her identity. The idea of Arthur Pendragon turned into a female and fighting for the Holy Grail is just that fascinating, even if a bit weird at first. She doesn't just have top-class design, but also one of the most epic attacks in the form of Excalibur (tell me anyone who isn't hearing "Exuucaalibaaaaa" as they read this ).

That's just a superficial look, though. If Iskandar is like your friend, she's the shining light in the distance. It's just that she shines so brightly that no one can really come near her. Which obviously is a bit of a problem and something she only very slowly comes to terms with in Fate/Stay Night. I remember when I watched Fate/Zero, I liked her, but that was about it. Kind of a bit too "I am a knight of honor!" like, who's just a bit too righteous and stoic for her own good. Not like she doesn't have her moments, like when she's driving that awesome motorbike But in the end I feel like Urobuchi didn't portray her that accurately, or maybe too defined by her regrets, because she kinda felt like a different person in Fate/Stay Night

(I still love this iconic scene, and the Fate franchise does too)

After all there's good reasons why people were kinda wondering about how Artoria acted in the new UBW anime. For example, while not exactly sneaky, she's very merciless when it's about doing her duty. Case in point, she didn't hesitate one second to try and strike Rin down when she comes to their house. She's a no bullshit kinda character you could say, and I like that about her. Basically here she isn't this kinda holier-than-thou character, but someone who's absolutely willing to get her hands dirty if necessary.

The other main thing about her is the whole king vs girl aspect, in the sense that she's one of the most famoust kings in history, yet also still has that kind and a bit insecure country girl side to her. Some don't like this at all, others do. To me it makes her a more complex character, someone who isn't just your knight in shining armor to protect you, but also a young girl at heart who has enough self-assurance to show her weak side. Trying to completely hide that side when she was alive is what lead to her downfall, because she was more like an icon than an actual human being.

Yes, yes, the option that you could turn her into your waifu obviously was part of why she has that side to her. But the original reasons don't really matter in my eyes, and she works just as well even if he her and Shirou don't develop romantic feelings for each other. She's just a very well-rounded character. Kind and cute, badass and ruthless, cheery and thoughtful.

Funnily enough, Fate/Grand Order never really focused on the original Artoria at all. But through her various different versions, you can see even more sides to her (like a version where she actually grew up) and learn to appreciate her even more. Yes it's a bit silly at times, and ofc there's also "joke" version of sorts, but it's still really cool to see. Really looking forward to LB6 for that reason alone (the next FGO arc we'll get)

I can understand that people who've only watched Zero or the UBW anime might not find her too great. You can see her good points there too, but they're much more hidden in my eyes than in the Visual Novel. She suffers in the same kinda way that Shirou does: You don't follow her journey through 3 different routes and see how she progresses and changes.

And she's also similar to Shirou in the way that I just don't know when to stop writing So I'll do that here and share a great many pictures with you instead (other versions included):

And wow, I totally expected Saber to win due to being somewhat the „face“ of the franchise. Pun intended.

Iskander is the bro-est bro ever to bro. Best character in Fate/Zero. Not quite in my top 10 though. Would have been top 20 for sure though, despite my general displeasure regarding Fate/Zero. He is great. I just wish he had been in a show that gave him more room to be great.

Artoria is, if anything, underrated at this point. I agree with what Nii said in particular about how Fate/Zero sort of missed on it's characterization of her. If Studio Deen hadn't turned the anime of her story into a train wreck and sort of locked it away from the mainstream Fate audience, I feel like she would be even more popular than she already is.

I'm very much in the camp that believes that the real substance to her character is her arc in Stay. Where she is the paragon of knightship and kingship but very uncomfortable being a human being. Artoria at the beginning of that story is driven by her duty in an almost robotic way. To the point where even her dream isn't really about what she wants. What makes a character as stern and withdrawn as her interesting is bringing out and exploring her humanity. Which is one of the main things that story does.

These days Rin has largely taken over as the main poster girl for Fate. But I definitely felt like Artoria deserves recognition as a great and iconic character. Whose story really is a great one.. even if Moedred is better.

Iskandar is a pretty interesting character. He really shined in Fate/Zero. Unfortunately outside of that, he really gets overshadowed by the other "kings". Also, his child version is adorable.

OG Saber, Artoria has been given a large amount of character depth. That said, it seems outside of the main series, she's used more for comic relief then serious storylines. Only one I could think of is the Camelot arc, and even that involves an Artoria who is considerably different from the regular Artoria. It's a shame that she doesn't get more interaction with the other knights of the round-table. Also absolutely love her armored dress look.

So once I started thinking about the Artoria post, I realized that I completely forgot to share Fate's most iconic and replicated scene when the respective characters popped up on this list... But it would be a waste to not use them at all, which means I'll just use this short little post to give you all a fix of this:
