I am CANCELLING Syd Craft! How DARE the mangaka reveal that his pure heroine was *gasp* seeing other men?! Four or five of them?! That whoooooorrrrrrreeeeee! I have burned all my copies of Syd Craft! Such betrayal!

Anyway.

I don't know how well the integration of comedy and mystery works for Syd Craft, but I gotta give 22i some props on his effort. In that panel up there, you can clearly see the calluses on her hand, which prove vital in the solution to the mystery later on. It's a detail that's there, but easy to miss because the panel right above it has a bae's cleavage shoved directly into your face. And you really don't pay attention to it since it's being laced with a gag.

The interesting is, every deduction Syd has made in this chapter was information that was already shown and drawn, he pulled nothing out of his ass. Amelia Watson always calling him Syd Craft? Yes indeed, I even checked the previous two chapters, she always goes for his full name. The closet that Petty stashed Amelia Watson in? Drawn behind her when she whacked her with a broom. Being the only one who opened it? Shown via a panicky gag that you'd laugh at and not really think about. Sleeping pills? Mentioned offhandedly by the old man. I was halfway expecting Syd to pull a really bullshit reasoning when she was crying, like, "Amelia Watson wouldn't be vulnerable around me! She's too proud for that!" But no. He solved the case with fair deduction. It's completely fair play whodunnit. There is nothing Syd has deduced that the reader could not have deduced based on the information presented.

Right now, it's still introductory phases, but I'm kinda itching to see what a full blown whodunnit would be like in the manga when this much detail and attention is paid to in the sequences leading up to the reveal. What we got so far are only basic mysteries to ease you in. I wonder how serious 22i really is about doing detective stories and whether he can hold it up on the weeklies. Even Aoyama Gosho takes lots of breaks to find inspiration for cases as he works along. Worse come to worse, pad out time with a beach episode arc while you write your mystery on the side. And that kinda feels in character for the kind of manga this is.

It's fun to read it as a gag manga for the first reading and just laugh along. It's even more interesting to read it as a mystery manga on the second reading and try to catch as many details as you can leading up to Syd's deduction. Somehow, these elements don't completely detract from one another and are seamlessly integrated. At least for this chapter. I'm impressed.

Yeah, I'm enjoying Syd Craft. Baby's first detective manga. A lot more fun than it is on a surface level...

Please tell me this isn’t the case…..IT’S WAY TOO DAMN EARLY.
I really wonder how it will develop after this. It can totally retcon and go to the status quo, which would be just bad.... or it will go back to our Himaten duo, I mean that's what the title stands for after all,, wouldn't make sense for the Mc to go with honoka.

Gosho Aoyama takes lots of breaks to keep his health from failing again, when he was younger, he had consistently only 1 or 2 breaks a year, and some years he even took no breaks at all.

Man, I am exhausted. Jump has to stop this 22 series trend ASAP.

1. Witch Watch: First chapter of the flashback that I truly liked. The story of the little warlock was very sad and I hope they will survive the backstory and eventually show up even in present time. The only part I didn't like much was the end: why should he think he can "save" her? She has all the rights of the world to prefer traveling with the other guy.
2. Undead Unluck: The final battle is getting to its climax and the endgame stuff is good now. A chapter dedicated to Fuuko and her shocking realization...this is very bad news. What will Andy do?
3. The Elusive Samurai: This is a great battle already. Reinforcements come from all sides (oh no that explosive-people-throwing guy...) and the two rivals know they are living a great rivalry. Can't wait for the "drink of respect" of next week.
4. Akane-banashi: Kiroku is put through very tough pressure, I wouldn't want to be in his shoes having to make decisions like that. The last page was of great effect, with the reminder that the greatest of his generation is the guy we are now watching grow as a Rakugoka.
5. Sakamoto Days: Shin resolve is good, but his friends have to not let all his time at Sakamoto's go to waste. Yay for fat Sakamoto returning in callback panels and...what is he doing here? Wasn't Sakamoto keeping him busy?
6. One Piece: Once again the early adventure feelings, only this time they are executed well. I can breathe the sense of adventure that always accompany the Straw Hat crew when they land on a new territory, and there are also a number of callbacks to the past since this island was teased for a long long time. I'm happy to see them happy that they finally reached it.
7. Astro Royale: Team effort victory is a great staple of Shonen Jump. It really gave the vibes of final battle with very high stakes, so I definitely promote this chapter.
8. Ichi the Witch: Good build-up for the opponent who needed some recommendation to make her look strong. Despite all her effort though, nothing can beat the hunter instinct of Ichi in taking the spotlight of the chapter.
9. Shinobi Undercover: From this chapter I understand that there has to be some backstory even for operators. Now they just became the most interesting characters of the series. The new guardian is good too.
10. Blue Box: The father is probably right and his proposal is reasonable, she'll keep living near Taiki anyway and he's not disapproving their relationship. Chinatsu and Yumeka meeting and having an impromptu match has the same vibes of Tokiyuki and Sadamune meeting and sharing a drink.
11. HunterXHunter: So many misteries at once! It was a nice chapter: what happened was more or less understandable, the kiss part was pretty funny, and in the final page another mistery adds to the pile. Why this choice?
12. RuriDragon: While it is always a nice and heartwarming read, this time it turned its major criticism around and was guilty of the opposite: usually I lament when the dragon part is put aside, this time there was too much of it. Life is all about equilibrium.
13. Kagurabachi: There is no more mistery and the objective of everyone is clear now, so it is more easy to understand the dialogue. I could even take time to appreciate that owl splash page.
14. Kill Blue: Occasional good chapter with some pretty funny jokes. The most notable, of course, is the diss battle that unfortunately we couldn't hear. The not-ramen eating contest doesn't seem that interesting, but we'll see.
15. Syd Craft: Love is a mistery: After the second chapter was spent developing a side character, it is only natural that the third one is spent developing the other. I liked the investigation, and also that the cases are not always murder, but the scenario can vary from time to time. Souffle > Elio for now.
16. Hima-Ten!: Himari keeps being the focus of these chapters with her no-date drama. But what I will remember from this chapter are the
onomatopoeias: did you spot "Hono-phew" and "Hima-attack"?
17. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi: After the axe emergency was over, we have now time to explore some lore and it is a smart choice for a setup, because it can lead to an easy excuse for an axe ending anytime. Probably not next week though, next week is for the hot springs episode.
18. Super Psychic Policeman Chojo: This detective chapter was funny for once. I thought Chojo was the culprit but I was proven wrong. Fun fact: for a while, this chapter was less viewed than perennial bottom Roboco on Mangaplus (now they switched places again).
19. Mission: Yozakura Family: Sign that the series is ending number #39: the only True Blooming that was hidden from us until now has been revealed in a random throwaway chapter that exists for the sole purpose of showing it before series end.
20. Me and Roboco: It was a nice idea to parody Undead Unluck before it is over. They could have done more with the concept though, and in the end Bondo was right, they didn't actually do anything until the end of the chapter. Un-impressive.
21. Nue's Exorcist: They are underwater, how can she say that? Oh wait that was the point. I missed the "you can't hear me here" part the first time.
22. Hakutaku: I felt nothing for the whole chapter, that was supposed to be cathartic. Remember Nine Dragon Balls Parade? The protagonists wanted to recruit at all costs a guy who had quit baseball to work and was content with it, and they insisted until they succeeded. That story irritated me, this one left me indifferent.

"If I were to write a book with me as the main character... It would be a tragedy."

21. Nue's Exorcist: They are underwater, how can she say that?
Something something, air bubbles and shinigami
Makes for a cool scene at least and Fujino is by far the best girl so I'll let it slide

Fumiko is ok but Andy is kinda of a miss...
Because they're not actual avatars. They're just recipes for the in-game character creator. They could've at least added a couple throwaway clothing items or something.

I'm sad that nothing is on the horizon with as much cultural significance as HeroAca.

Was the last one we were waiting on...continues the cycle of editor interference ruining multiple series, no SasuNaru, no IchiRuki, no ItaFushi, no ZenTan, no BakuDeku...time will tell if editors allow KilGon or LuVi to occur. If it doesn't it will be like an arrow to the knee.

As I said in the past forum once the MHA ending arrives and if certain ship happened it would be a total meltdown by a certain part of the fanbase just how it happened with Bleach with the Ichigo and Orihime thing.

That part of the MHA fandom is going nuts and even harrasing Horikoshi latest tweet, it just amazes me how a pairing can make people act this way, is a total embarrasment.

This is just an example of the thousand of things that have been said lol, just wanted to mention it cause it's crazy.

And Thanks Horikoshi for all your work :verily

Very good issue to kick off the new fiscal year, lots of chapters were pretty pivotal in-context and even the worst of it was still passable - nothing was plain bad or offensive or terrible to read.

Here's my top 3 for #52, final issue of 2024:
1. Akane-banashi
2. Hunter x Hunter
3. Sakamoto Days

And my top 3 and full ranking for #1 of 2025:
1. Hunter x Hunter
2. Akane-banashi
3. One Piece
Excellent, could have been in the top 3:
4. Sakamoto Days
5. Kagurabachi

Stellar, very good stuff:
6. RuriDragon
7. Ichi the Witch
8. Blue Box
9. Hima-Ten!

Good:
10. Me & Roboco
11. Astro Royale
12. Nue's Exorcist
13. Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi
14. WITCH WATCH

Pretty decent:
15. Undead Unluck
16. The Elusive Samurai
17. Mission: Yozakura Family
18. Shinobi Undercover

Fine, passable, not awful:
19: Hakutaku
20: Syd Craft: Love is a Mystery
21. Kill Blue
22. Super Psychic Policeman Chojo

@Shinuki no Reborn feel free to use both those above for the current + next polls.

This trio of Hunter x Hunter chapters seems like a strange detour but ended up doing a lot for both Morena and Borksen; the latter who was only introduced in the last batch of chapters two years ago and we've been fully in her mind for weeks now. Loved the new shades to this relationship between these seemingly tertiary characters getting explored so heavily. If next week is the last before a break then I hope we get to see the fallout of the martial law as it affects the other major players.

Togashi is still giving updates despite having surgery this month, by the sounds of it:
  • Storyboards complete for up to around 438
  • Character inking done up until 424, likely now proceeding to various next steps in the meantime
  • Chapters 411-413 in the final steps prior to being published; since he hasn't done his usual photo of sending the manuscripts for print I do think there will be a break and he'll be able to get ahead of schedule in the interim. Or maybe the extra time during the double issue weeks will be a blessing and keep us going if he picks up the pace? Either way, I think up to chapter 420 feels pretty much guaranteed for this year.
This was my favourite One Piece chapter in Elbaph so far - it feels like this drawn out introduction is now going to step up a gear (or five). Still mad about that death in Kagurabachi... never committing myself to another character being my new fav, even if they look cool as fuck :(. Ichi the Witch was a blast, and Hima-Ten is doing a good job of balancing the romcom tropes with some grounded, realistic dialogue between the characters. Undead Unluck and Mission: Yozakura Family are proceeding with the final battles pretty well. Naturally, I preferred Me & Roboco's parody Undead Unluck chapter to the actual thing though, that was fun. Astro Royale and Nue's Exorcist doing nearly the same thing on the same week, and being close to each other in the TOC is amusing. Both were really good chapters though, can't discredit them even if the timing is strange.

Shinobi Undercover really does feel like the chuunibyou little brother to Sakamoto Days, thanks to it channeling early-MYF energy as well. I wish the art and character expressions were better, but Sakamoto Days improved a lot as it went so if this did manage to survive I wouldn't be too mad if it meant Santa levelling up their game. Meanwhile Super Psychic Policeman Chojo's chapter felt strangely pointless even by one-off gag manga standards, lacking in any real jokes or impact in what it was going for? And Kill Blue seems to me like it's speeding through what's it's set up. Going to be curious to see what happens by the end/after this festival arc in the next few weeks to indicate it's near-future.

For RuriDragon, this was my favourite chapter of the series so far. The fact we're at 25 chapters too considering where we were a year ago is really nice, and only one month has passed in-story, wow. Great balance of funny, Ruri stepping up to the plate in a way that affirms her evolving as a character, a new big sister introduced with a sick design, and lots of others got cute little moments too. And on one particular point from my 2025 predictions:
  • RuriDragon will continue as it's been doing with occasional longer breaks while still bi-weekly. Volume sales in a month will stay around here volume 2 is at, maybe dip slightly. We'll get to see her dad within the series and they'll be some revelation of him sleeping with her mother when he was in some sort of humanoid form.
We're not quite there yet but I'm going to give myself half a point already with what is likely going to be used as the exact reason why Ruri's mum didn't actually bang a dragon, at least in its traditional dragon form. Hot sexy semi-humanoid man dragon is bound to happen.

As for the My Hero Academia epilogue, what a brilliant send-off, and based on some of the reactions here and elsewhere it affirms the obvious: (1) the MHA fandom remains one of the most embarrassing of the past generation and (2) as far as fandoms go they actually hate their own series they claim to love more than maybe any other; at least others will dickride their favs until their blind to the faults - which is annoying in a separate way - but seeing the reactions to the final pairing or the final rankings of the heroes when all of it makes complete sense for their characterisations and arcs up until now is seriously baffling. Specifically: Of course Deku and Ochako was going to be canon. Of course BakuDeku was not. Of course Bakugo isn't going to be good as being popular when it comes to being likeable to other people.

If you genuinely thought otherwise then you weren't actually a fan of the series - you had your own tinted glasses painting the series in a direction you wanted or were somehow convinced would happen, even though the text never, ever suggested it would. If you're outraged or shocked or upset by this ending while also claiming to be a fan of the series then you're simply not a very attentive reader and don't enjoy what it's actually about near as much as you think. Embarrassing MHA fandom being embarrassing as always. Rage about your favourite character not being good at being a perfect hero and his score reflecting that, or that it was framed form Ochako POV (imo the best decision since her arc felt not fully complete in the WSJ chapter run - so this was needed and correct), rage all you want but it all makes sense and concludes the series in a fitting way. And this is coming from someone who overall was pretty unenthused by the final war and wasn't loving the series the past few years as much as I used to.

I've said it before, as a gay man myself, having a legitimate gay/queer pairing in WSJ would be a dream to see (though it has before with Hibari-kun in it's own problematic but affectionate way, which it being published in the early 80s is even more impressive), but it's not happening in MHA or any series that are being published right now at least based on the chapters they've released so far. Complaints about that being the status quo are valid but become a bit of a useless echo when it's because people have projected their own fantasies onto a pairing or characters and it's clouded their judgement. Shipping should be fun, have fun with it, don't take it too serious if the series itself doesn't, and if it doesn't become canon then it's not that big of a deal - what you liked about the dynamic still stands even without a big Canon™ stamp of approval. Okay, maybe you're entitled to be a little mad if it's a romcom, but that's the exception. Don't embarrass yourself by hating on the character that 'won' in the shipping war you invented in your mind. If you're going to frame it as some anti-gay agenda then I'd suggested you read a manga by an actual queer author or a steamy or cute BL if you want to find something that scratches that particular itch - there's a wealth of (good) options out there. To name a few across the demographic labels:
  • Double by Ayako Noda (Josei)
  • Blue Flag by KAITO (Shonen)
  • Hiraeth: The End of the Journey. by Yuuki Kamatani (Seinen)
  • Here And There And Us + and it's sequel: Here And There And Us (And Then And After) by Thanat (Seinen that became cute BL)
  • Like the Beast by Kotetsuko Yamamoto (Horny Boys' Love)
  • I Think Our Son is Gay by Okura (Unspecified demographic/self-published)

It wouldn't be a problem if the entire manga wasn't written as a love letter to BakuDeku fans.
