This reinforces my feeling about how bad this current Jump truly is. Flop after flop after flop after flop. I do believe that a lot of it has to do with our current societies lack of attention span and the shifting interests of their (jump) current target demographic.
There is a theory on Japanese twitter at the moment called 「インフラ系ヒロイン」("Infla kei heroine"). I haven't read in detail yet, but it tries to explain why a lot of jump series are failling at the moment, while series like Ichi or Herzt are succeeding. It would be thanks to the heroine who plays a role that influes on the hero's role or whatever. I need to read it to be able to explain it properly.

But you should all read it. Look for the expression in Twitter.

EDIT: after reading a little, well it's a complicated expression to just say a particular type of キャラ関係性 (relation between characters). True, but it's fun how it's buzzing like the new shiny thing. I'm more interested in how all people are answering to this on Twitter and especially what they think is the real problem to Jump series failling one after another....

Very very tangentially related to the thread topic but the Ponsuka anime finally aired today and there was a tiny reference to Shudan in there, which I thought was cute.

I really hope more of Yokota's stuff gets animated eventually.
Shuudan did not deserve to die. Easily in my top 5 series that did not deserve to be cancelled. So fucking good.

Not to say that the lineup is or isn't weak, but it's really just because they made the choice to only release volumes of two of the actual hit series. Next month all ten series releasing volumes are actual hit titles and it will look a lot better lol.

Competition from the likes of TikTok and Instagram Reels is probably more relevant than we expect though. It's basically free entertainment at the fingers of the youth and lowkey TikTok algorithm is super addicting. Lot of competition for entertainment for youth that manga has to deal with that wasn't there in the 90s

Hell, since we don't get ToC till tomorrow, and we have new members since the last time we did this. What would you guys rank your top series that didn't deserve cancellation (series that lasted under a year)?

For me, I'd probably rank it as

1. Illegal Rare
2. Teenage Renaissance! David
3. Mononofu
4. Shuudan
5. Noah's Notes
6. ST&RS
7. Kagamigami
8. Kaedegami
9. The Last Saiyuuki
10. Ultra Battle Satellite

For series that just barely cracked a year, I'd give honorable mentions to Hard-Boiled Cop & Dolphin, Robot x Lazerbeam, & Agravity Boys. They'd probably be towards the top.

I live in Japan and young people definitely read manga.
The problem is that in Japan there are more old people than young people.

Do you think that's just the "middle class" series or all of them?

Because I mean, the large hits are also adding some issues. I think that's kind of related to the fact that WSJ typical shounen manga rarely reach something like 400 chapters anymore. The last one was BnHA. Neither KnY nor JJK crossed even 300. CSM Part 1 had fewer than 100. Having huge hits is hard. If they don't last much, you need a faster input of hits, and that does not seem to be the case, even though KGB and Ichi are getting there (they just lack the anime).

Honestly most of the series that I've really got into were ones that had a cult following and lasted a little while like Agravity Boys and P6. Iroha also falls into that category but I liked it less. For ones that got pretty normal axes, basically only Mamayuyu really stung for me. I also have fond memories of Double Taisei.

Double Taisei was nuts! Was so much fun reading it once it started getting hella weird.
But I always felt it only got that once he recieved the axe notice. Then again, he also did Devily Man which was pretty weird so maybe it was intentional from the getgo.
And man, I should give Mamayuyu a read sometime with how many users here seemed to dig it. Came out at the tail end of my manga hiatus.

Weekly Shoseki Top 500 (3/30/26 - 4/5/26)
15. Akane-banashi #21
40. Nue's Exorcist #14

Jesus, week so terrible for Jump that even Harukaze Mound didn't chart, and i hope Oricon is higher for Nue because these Shoseki estimates are low too :feelsbadman
The Shoseki numbers feel oddly low in general, not just for Nue, so I am fairly hopeful that it is just an underestimation🙏 especially with how the volume and the backlog has been doing on amazon (it's the NATSUKI volume for god's sake...)

When the anime is announced on May, it may help its sales.

I’d recommend it! It definitely made some missteps so I understand somewhat why it failed but it also made me feel like it had so much potential (a word which axed manga fans like to throw around willy nilly, I know) volume 1 sales were also like Kiyoshi level so part of me is like “if only it debut a little latter…”

The thing with Mamayuyu is that, despite its very clear flaws, it had heart, incredible creativity with its paneling a unique world, and (imo) solid writing in in multiple places, the volume 4 extra ending is honestly proof to me that Hayashi has what it takes.

MamaYuyu deserved to be as famous as Kagurabachi

and i dare to say that if it had survived it would be in front of KGB

Speaking about the lower success of modern series, this article (in Portuguese) comments a bit on this, with some theories.

Shoseki Top 500 (April 6)
6. Akane-banashi 21
8. Nue's Exorcist 14
54. Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call it Quits! 1
98. Harukaze Mound #4
224. The Mage Next Door 1

Massive jump for every series on the 4th day, special mention to Nue back in the top 10 and Hero Girl just outside the top 50, higher than it debuted. Nice to see it not be a complete failure at least.

Akane-banashi backlog
6. Akane-banashi 21
96. Akane-banashi 1
134. Akane-banashi 2
254. Akane-banashi 3
369. Akane-banashi 4
491. Akane-banashi 20

Akane backlog is trending pretty weirdly, volume one is on the top 100, but only 6 volumes ranked. At the very least this means that the boost is doing something, hopefully more volumes show up.

Issue 19 Rankings:

Tier 1 (Great):

1 - One Piece (yeah it wasn't gonna be anything else at number 1, i'd even have it take up spots 2-5 as well lol)
2 - Kagurabachi (It's so funny how much of this series is blatant aura farming but it's such good obvious aura farming, that i quite like it)
3 - Akanebanashi (looks like her God of Death is a friendly child version? Can't wait to see more. Also thought Ep 1 of the anime was pretty good. I saw some people complaining that they didn't focus too much on the actual Rakugo, but that's how it was in the manga too....later eps will focus much more on the Rakugo performances than this)
4 - Ichi the Witch (new characters seem cool! Seems like they use anti-magic tools? Makes sense.)
5 - Shinobi Undercover

Tier 2 (Good):

- Alien Headbutt (a group of villains, a classic. Also the page of Ouga taking the parasite was pretty cool)
- Sakamoto Days (once again, Shishiba's fights are the best)
- Someone Hertz
- Ultimate Exorcist Kiyoshi

Tier 3 (Ok):

- Roku (I'm not typing this long title out in full every week, i've learned my lesson with Hero Girl lol - anyway, it was ok. I really like the character designs, the first half was really explanatory and exposition heavy but the second half was much better imo. I can see this being fun, dunno how long it'll live, but it'll be fun. Ok start. Why is it called Roku's House of Oddities anyway? I know Roku means six and there's six of them (MC + five curses) but the title makes it seem like it's a house that belongs to someone called Roku, but it's...not? Lol)
- Blue Box
- Under Doctor
- Kinato's Magic (weird escalation there lol)
- Me and Roboco
- Nue's Exorcist (good end to the arc)
- The Hero Girl and Demon Lord Call It Quits (RIP)
- Hima Ten

Tier 4 (Bad):

- The Mage Next Door (a shame, I think this author has potential, so I'll be on the lookout for them in the future. But this last chapter was just weird lol, just an absolute nothingburger of a final chapter. Even when axed, final chapters usually still have SOMETHING, a nice wrap up or a "look at what could have been!" thing...this was just...nothing. Didn't even get to see the conclusion to the fight. Lol.)

Not that good for a first day backlog. I think it is pretty reasonable to say that it will most likely drop out of the top 500 on the upcoming days.

Hero Girl is still a flop but it woulda been nice if they let it straggle along to the next round like how Otr got to live multiple rounds...
