The guy they picked for zoro looks awfully wimpy. Punchable even. I know he did enishiro but dunno, seems like a weird fit for zoro. Dunno, the guy seems weirdly effeminate.

When I tried guessing which member was cast as whom I got them like this:

The guy casted as luffy I guessed was sanji. Because of his comically large eyebrows. Figured that if you color his hair right it'd make some sense.

The guy casted as sanji I guessed was going to be zoro. He just didn't strike me as a sanji.

And the guy cast as zoro I guessed as luffy. Because I ran out of one piece characters mostly.

I have no idea who any of these people are, which is a very good thing when it comes to this sorta casting imo.

I'm genuinely impressed the guy playing Luffy has the energy and expressiveness you'd need for Luffy. That's an extremely tall order.

TBH I can't imagine this show being OP in any way imaginable. I don't see how most of the humor or gags can translate. Let alone that you need extremely high quality CGI.

they got a diverse cast and yet got it right, even if we dont see a few as fit, none of them seem like a terrible choice..

In regards to Zoro, i thought he is pretty decent, didn't smile a bit during the talk which already seems characteristic... I'm now interested to see how the hair coloring will feature..

Honestly i think this will be really bad.

Can't say much about casting because i have to see them in action first but there is no way they can transfer all the devil fruit abilities and other techniques or even the world of one piece and all it's inhabitants accurately to live action.

Well, if the live action version of "Cowboy Bebop" pans out well next Friday, then I'm all for "One Piece" as well.

It will be interesting to see how much of the series they will manage to cover, I am eager to see who will play Shanks, Buggy and Coby, too. Not going to dismiss the potential for this series yet, especially if Oda is a consultant on it.

I think if anything, they generally (excluding Luffy) look older than the characters ages. They're all 17-19 years old at the start of the series after all. I think they can make it work, the energy is what's most important.

Honestly i think this will be really bad.

Can't say much about casting because i have to see them in action first but there is no way they can transfer all the devil fruit abilities and other techniques or even the world of one piece and all it's inhabitants accurately to live action.

It'll definitely live or die by its production value. That's always the case with live action adaptations of (especially) fantasy and sci-fi. Whether they can replicate the world-building, at least to some extent, is one of the most important aspects for sure.

I've been dreading this project since they announced it in 2017. But honestly now that we get a glimpse of it, I'm trying to see the good things. I still don't have faith that it will actually be good, but like... I want it to be at least as good as a One Piece live action can possibly be. And the more I look at this casting, the more it feels like they - at the very least - really want to get it right.

I'm pretty sure Zoro casting has more to with his experience in acting complex over the top sword fights rather than just because he is pretty.

But yeah, it's all about how they manage to visually create the world. Find that balance with cartoon and realism that works and make it look good.

I'm pretty confident that the first season covers up to Arlong arc. That'd make a neat dramaturgic arc culminating in Namis iconic "Please, help me". Another good ending would be the classic drink scene after fleeing Logue Town, if they really squeeze it. My theory, loosely based on the script rumors that have been floating around, with a hint of my fanfiction:

1. Romance Dawn told in long flashback sequences, Luffy meets and frees Coby from a cruel pirate Alvida.
2. Episode of Zoro. He gets an extended back story, detailing his background in pirate hunting and attempted recruit to Baroque Works and meeting with Yosaku and Johnny. Setting up Mihawk's existence. Ends up with Luffy seeing him tied on the cross.
3. Figuring out the injustice/nepotism going on here with Zoros judgement (extended plotline with Helmeppo, Morgan and Nezumi, a mini detective story), fight with marines, Zoro joins Luffy, Coby meets Garp in a B plot while still solving the corruption at the marine base, Coby learns that Garp is there for the same reason doing internal investigation on marine side, Coby comes to Luffy to tell him that he will join marines, Luffy flees hastily when he hears Garp is at the location.
4. Episode of Buggy. They meet Nami. The marine corruption side plot is there. The "Hachiko" dog is super cute and will become a meme.
5. Episode of Usopp. Kuro is also somehow connected to the corruption mystery.
6. Baratie 1/2. Might include aftermath of conflict with Kuro. Episode(s) of Sanji.
7. Baratie 2/2 These episodes include filling original content on Krieg, Gin and Mihawk. Gets tied into the conspiracy sideplot, and also make a sneaky reference to Crocodile, both with the Warlord explanation with Mihawk, and as Krieg enemy at Grand Line.
8. Arlong arc 1/2 Episode of Nami.
9. Arlong arc 2/2. Some original content where the corruption on East Blue is revealed to be a ploy of Nezumi and Arlong. Garp (and Coby) after solving the mystery arrive at the scene, but bit too late, as Luffy has beaten the shit out of Arlong and Nezumi, who already has had the bounty placed on Luffy. The implication is left though, that there is something else shady going on in the background - they were supplying someone at Grand Line/Alabasta (Crocodile)
10. Logue Town. Zoro meets Tashiki and is confused. We get a surprise mention of Ace, as Luffy receives a message from him ("Saw your bounty, meet me in Alabasta! - Your Bro") Buggy and Alvida surprise Luffy. Garp takes over the role of Smoker, trying to apprehend the pirates, but also trying to stop the execution of Luffy, doesn't quite make it in time, but then the freak lightning accident happens. Garp looks around, and sighs at a hooded figure disappearing to the crowd. Smoker and Tashigi do appear though as local marines who help Garp, Garp is impressed, but their role is minor. Logia Fruits are explained, Coby and Helmeppo are revealed to be following Garp. Garp reveals to them that he is Luffys Grandpa, when questioned why he let him slip away. Strawhats manage to escape the Buggy Pirates and the Marines. The season ends with the drinking scene while going up the mountain. We might get a glimpse of Laboons silhouette.

Season 2: Baroque Works/Alabasta, if the S1 is succesfull. Probably gets cancelled though, as most Netflix shows.

Also, its the starting Zoro, who seemed skinny... If there's one cast they shouldn't have revealed, it would have to have been Zoro... The way the manga/anime revealed him was amazing. Anyways, i didnt mind him honestly speaking. Sure he will buff up further as the story progresses....

Why did the logo have to be any different, specially, why a real skull??? its not bad, but i dont see the point. The original is perfect...

Iam overall skeptical if it will indeed hit the success of other TV shows, specially netflix ones... The first season is only going to hook on the current fans as the story really gets interesting and demanding after east blue saga...

In terms of sets, gfx and world building, the only challenge would be certain DFs, and the fishmen. The crazy part begins in season 2

Jim Carrey would be better as Bon Clay, but i haven't seen enough of Jim Rash to honestly make the comparison...

I'm curious for now the casting of season 1 characters, especially the ones that have bigger or recurring roles, like Shanks, Buggy, Mihawk, Coby, Alvida, Arlong. Rumors have it that they were looking for an older marine officer for a recurring role. This could be Sengoku or Garp.

I remember the official casting call was for the main 5, Coby and Garp. The fact that those two are important enough to cast early makes me think they migh put some focus on Coby's cover story training arc with Garp as well, to show the workings of the Marines.

I can definitely see Jared as Shanks. He's got the right look and age. We know he can be comedic, but also able to nail the "cool-headed yet angry under the surface" that's so important for the character.

I could see someone like Nicolai Coster-Waldau doing well as Shanks too.

I love Jemaine Clement and everything he touches. I think he might not be able to be quite bat-shit crazy enough though, his comedic delivery is always much more low-key and dry.
In terms of voice and just nailing that craziness factor, I thought of Ken Jeong. But that might be way too meme-y of a choice.

Coster-Waldau is also a solid idea. He can also pull of funny and charming, but go dead serious in a second.

I thought Clement more along the lines he did Vlad in What We do in the Shadows. He was crazy, but also a total drama-llama. But maybe Jonathan Brugh as "the young rebel vampire" would be more fitting for a dangeour explosive Buggy?

Ken Jeong could be too much. Though with Buggy, I'm not sure if too much is even a thing.
