One thing I'm wondering is how they're gonna tackle the size of the characters in this series. They can't possibly do a "Hagrid suit" for every humongous 3-meter tall person. Probably gonna have to take a more "realistic" approach, which makes the casting choices much wider.

I saw someone say they wanted Stephen Lang (from Don't Breathe, Avatar) as Garp. Grey haired and about as buff as can realistically be expected of an old man who's not a comic book character. They're never gonna find an actor with 1,5 meter shoulder width, yknow?

Stephen Lang would be cool Garp. What about Ron Perlman? I don't feel like he would do it though.

Perlman could work, I can also see him as Whitebeard honestly, if he's not too old and tired at that point.

They could probably afford some big names for the recurring villain types like Mihawk. I know Antonio Banderas used to be fan casting favorite for him but he's a bit too old at this point. I think Jonathan Rhys-Meyers definitely can nail the icy stare and demeanor to play him..

Btw, the cast is adorable. Taz Skylar, Sanji, cooked for the rest of the crew. Mackenyu/Zoro, commented that he doesn't know where he is at the moment.

Stumbled upon some audition tapes, no idea if these people are anywhere near being cast but thought I'd share anyway since it also gives a little glimpse into what the writing could be like.


Only one of these I think kinda sells it is the actress up for Alvida tbh.

Interesting. It seems like Shanks was an open casting. I figured that could be one of the roles where they would spent some extra and get a well-known actor for 1 episode, thorough direct contact.

Same, definitely thought he'd be a big name actor to draw new viewers to the live action, seeing as he'll be in the first episode but only a handful of episodes throughout the show so not too hard on the budget. Really hope they find someone with the chops for it.

A little too caricature-ish to me, but I wouldn't be surprised if they went with someone a bit over the top for Alvida specifically (and I don't really care much for her character to be honest, so wouldn't mind a new take on her).

Same, I actually wouldn't have minded they cut Alvida completely. Basically Luffy could save Coby from any pirate.

I'm a bit worried about the "is it because I'm a woman?"-angle in her dialogue. It could come across as making fun of feminism in bad way.

So I had no idea but apparently there was this livestream with a whole bunch of One Piece YouTubers and Matt Owens (the show-runner of the live-action) made a surprise appearance and talked for quite some time. This is already like a year and a half ago, but honestly it's pretty reassuring to hear how much of an actual One Piece FANBOY he is. Like, hearing him talking about it makes it clear that the guy in charge definitely one of us. And Oda and his team are very involved with everything they do as well.

Also he tells the story about how he won Oda's trust to do the show, and his relationship with Oda in general.

Like, I may still have doubts about the end result, but this whole thing was very comforting to hear.

Steven Maeda is the showrunner though, Matt Owens is the lead writer.

But apparently they work pretty close with each other.

Still, it still takes away this image you might have a of a faceless corporation (Netflix) profiting on something they don't know, and actually gives hope that they will do the story justice.

Yeah. And Oda said that Matt won him over by telling how OP saved his life. So script-wise I'm certain justice is done.

I'm seriously more concerned right now it just translates to screen visually.

I do speculate though, that they are gonna build the ships so, that the figureheads and some other details are easily swapped, so one ship can pose as several different ones.

He gets it, they get it. It isn't just action for the sake of it, they are always fighting for a reason. Jobst did excellent episodes on Daredevil, so I'm really hyped if he is involved as well.

Jobst is the man for action scenes, ans great TV director in general, that got me hyped!

I do speculate though, that they are gonna build the ships so, that the figureheads and some other details are easily swapped, so one ship can pose as several different ones.

Probably even just the first episode even, so yeah I'm very pleased we won't be getting a bunch of cheap CGI ships even when it's smaller scenes like that. I can imagine they'd go the route you mentioned, where they switch out the detailed aesthetics of the ship and use the same foundation for different crews etc, which is totally fine, but i think I saw some leaked pictures somewhere of at least what seemed like a Marine ship as well so they don't seem like they're cutting corners in that department.

I don't wanna catch myself getting too hype about this but I kinda can't help but to, especially since I'm rereading/rewatching the series atm and thinking "man, more people deserve to experience these stories". And hopefully that's exactly what the live action will do.

Same, I don't want to build up too many expectations, but with every little tidbit of info... I just can't help it. I'm getting hyped AF.

I was just watching some OP story arc tier lists on Youtube, and got a little teary many times when they went thorough the events. There is just so much goodness in there in the core of the story. I really hope they nail this, and new audiences will figure out why this kooky pirate adventure is so huge in the genre.

Well Orgz said it.

Means that he just doesn't get the source material - he feels it. It is personally important, not just any other writing job. He really knows what he is talking about - but he isn't just any fan fictionist, but an established TV writer with some good portfolio material. From all his statements I can tell he is a fan and a professional. That is a promising start. Because the script is the most important thing, always.

Idk the casting looks pretty good so far.

But I can understand the issues. One Piece is too large for any budget. There will be cuts and that alone is going to be hard for any dedicated fans.

But that's not the main problem. Take LOTR for example, the previously established book fanbase outraged over the cuts like Tom Bombadil, but end of the day the movie's Story was fully functional, appealing the casuals who forgot 90% of the book's details anyways and brought in more fans than ever before, who experienced the story for first time. I belonged to the last category, too.

No, the real issue is that One Piece is a cartoon and definitely not politically correct. And many of the tools it employs don't translate well to real life.

Boob size for example. The size and shape of One Piece breasts is hardly achievable by natural means in real life, and while augmented breasts can have a certain appeal of their own, that's also not really the aesthetic implied by the Manga. The tool doesn't work from paper to real life.

But of course the size of breasts is not really that important for someone to be attractive. But the absence of the tool means that it has to be entirely substituted by acting.

Nami is going to be very hard for the actress. Western movie industry (or any movie industry) doesn't have these female characters that are both this hot/sexy confident type and also cute/vulnerable/funny. And in general they try to avoid sexualization. My biggest fear is that they make Nami either a prettier version of Pippi Longstockings or a purposeless teenager eye candy.

Which brings me to the next point, Sanji.

And I don't even know where to start. Obviously almost any of the tools regarding his libido are taken away. No heart shaped eyes, no nosebleed, even the dancing seems out of place irl.

Again should be a nightmare for the actor, how do you make it clear you are full of lecherous thoughts without being accused of either being a sexist (which Sanji is, 100%), or a creep. Totally see a blonde Zorro with kicks incoming.

Speaking of Zorro... I don't think the third sword will ever enter his mouth outside of Oni Giri. That's another thing that just won't work, and is certainly going to be adjusted in favor of cool two-sword show fights. Which isn't nearly as problematic as tits or nosebleed but these little things will add up.

Also, Cameron Crovetti, who plays Homelander's son and also the son of Nicole Kidman's character on Big Little Lies (along with his real-life twin brother) posted this the same day:

None of them confirmed of course but of course this gets speculations going.

Personally I can see Boyega as Smoker or maybe one of the Arlong Pirates.. with the twins (or just the one) maybe playing Kid Sanji in his flashback? Maybe Coby, but they seem a little young for that imo.
