All Purpose Sig Contest Discussion Thread 2011

Uh, so I want to participate in this contest..
and I'm almost done with my sig..just a little problem.
If anyone remember with the chessmate signature, its the same problem.
I'm having problem resizing , whenever i resize it to 500x170
it becomes toooooo stretched and ugly and I want to keep it's shape.
Do anyone knows how to resize it?
and is it a must to be 500 x 170?

170x550 pixels (300 kilobytes in file size) is simply the maximum size limit. If you want to use a vertical dimension smaller than 170 pixels or a horizontal dimension less than 550 pixels, you can.

The winner of the rabbit sig contest has been decided, and the person with the best bunny is Bugzee!

This adorable signature fits perfectly with the spirit of this theme as it ingeniously weaves together so much relevant imagery. As I mentioned in mod comment in the submission post, the theme was inspired by the Chinese New Year. The artwork definitely has a very traditional Oriental style to it. To further underscore the connection of rabbit to the year, elements of the various seasons are strewn throughout the image from the bountiful fruits and loving hearts of spring to the autumn leaves and delicate winter snowflake placed brilliantly to look like the head of a dandelion.

I counted six rabbits in the signature (how many do you all see? ) with one precious rabbit in the center as the focus with a look of blissful satisfaction as suggesting that it is responsible for blessings all around it. The lucky nature of this cute little fellow is supported by the placement of rainbow ending right at its feet.

That guy on the right side looks somewhat familiar. He seems like a chibi version of an anime character, but I can't quite place where I've seen him before. At first glance, he seems somewhat out-of-place amongst everything else going on, but upon closer inspection, one can see that his hat provides the last, missing element that completes this symbolic homage to rabbits: the moon.

Most importantly, this signature's sooo cute!

Amazing job, Bugzee! This signature definitely makes me feel very proud to have been born in the Year of the Rabbit!

Tip for the future:
If you want to preserve the looks of your signature when resizing:
- If you're using Photoshop, go to Image Size and when you write down the dimensions, dont forget to check the "Constrain Proportions" checkbox.
- If you are using the free transform tool to resize the layer or a render or something, hold shift and resize the image from the corner. holding shift = checking the "Constrain Proportions" checkbox during the free transform mode.

I think I'll make a signature with that render ... Nothing to lose! at least I will practice making sigs with different colors and themes.

I was so happy that I got the first win of the New Year with that future sig and not forgetting that awesome commentary by Tsuki which was the best ever imo~ Now, I got the first win in the new thread! Kanpai!!! …and yet again Tsuki makes another amazing commentary. I love reading them~ Thanks for taking the time to write them up! It’s not something you come across regularly in any forums. Definitely an entertaining read as always!

@ Coffee – I’m sure you could make an awesome sig with the same kind of feel/style as the “Lucky Rabbit” one. I’m confident that you could go even one step further with it~ If you have any base ideas or concepts and you want to make one; let me know and I’ll give you some feedback/suggestions on it!

@ Zeltrax – Awesome first submission dude! I love the “wings of freedom” idea. I compared the original size to the one you submitted in and just to add to what Shin said; it seems to me that you simply downsized your signature like one would normally do with a picture.

As stated before the maximum size of a sig submission is 550x170, but by no means do you have to use the full blown size at all. Check the sig hall of fame thread and you’ll find many examples where members have taken advantage of a smaller sig size. Sometimes when I feel that I might use or need a large canvas size for my sig, I usually expand the canvas a bit larger than the maximum size. E.g. I might go for a 650x230 canvas template and place/sketch my ideas on it. After I play around with the objects and I’m happy with their positions then I’ll change and downsize the canvas to an appropriate level to compliment/fit my base idea. This helps a lot in some situations where you don’t know how much space you’ll need to add and complete everything in your sig. ^___^

@ Shin - Really cool submission, dude. Finally, a shin sig with no red or black as the main focus! Anyway, I think you went with a really cool idea~ That sig reminded of those theatre posters where they focus on promoting a play with one particular character on their posters/billboards~ It could even be a album cover or cinema poster! Great work, effects-master~

Firstly, congratulations and thank you for the compliment
And yes, that is exactly what I did...
This is basically how I went about it
"Merge all visible layers" and when it's done, I'll just resize the entire thing as one layer. I think I shouldn't have done that and also should have restrain my proportions like shin said(thanks!)

I'll use the 650x230 idea when I make my next signature and yes, the hall of fame is a wonderful place!

I've been a silent follower of this contest for a while now...but I have to admit the current theme feels like something else, and I just had to post here...it's the first time when I found myself in difficulty of voting, and the submissions are far from over...I'm looking forward to this one
