so you really hate what your handle stands for....kinda weird??

anyways...you have one of he most eye-catching color palettes i've ever seen in my life and being able to have a coloring similar to your style has been quite an achievement for the other colorists here...how'd you come up with those amazing earth tones?

I dunno, I just pick them straight from the colour picker. I guess I prefer a certain sort of tone, and that's what I naturally gravitate towards, and then I usually spend ages tweaking the colours after I've finished till I'm satisfied. I've never really noticed I had a particular colour palette style, but looking at all the colourings side by side, yeah, I can see that now. XD

what are you coloring next? you clean these panels yourself right since you don't credit any cleans?

Yep. I used to clean Bleach for Mangarain, so I like to do it myself. I'm anal like that.

could you please do the naruto-gamakichi poster and the 341 (?) naruto-sasuke fighting stance...willitblend did justice to these panels and i hope to see your own interpretation of them...

I thought about doing those, but willitblend and AK totally blew me away with their colourings! I don't think you can get a better interpretation than theirs, so I probably wouldn't be able to offer anything new there.

well it's hard to top those...but i DO know you have a fighting chance of doing that! besides, it's not a better one we all like, but something that been done by you!
if you decide to do it, i'm sure a lot more artists are gonna be inspired and a lot more fans are gonna lose their jaws!

btw, maybe you can use them for your tutorial? but probably for the advanced ones though....

Paint Pixel is an artist with a huge reputation across the Naruto fandom, who has influenced and inspired countless artists (including DD), but she hasn't been active for about 2 years now, maybe more? Many people consider her to still to be the best artist the Naruto fandom has seen - even today. Her style is simple, elegant and classic - it hasn't dated.

I've quite a few of her works - I'll post some samples in a separate thread so we don't hijack Amaretti's!


On that note, Amaretti is the only artist I know of to be compared with Paint Pixel which, by itself, is a real accomplishment.

I think Amaretti is even better than paintpixel. Amaretti's style is something I haven't seen before, very original. Anyway, both of them are great artist's.

I agree - they're both wonderful. I love Amaretti's softer, more modern approach, but I like Paint Pixel's for their timeless quality. Incidentally, I think Amaretti's colouring of AL overlooking the city is the best single page colouring - ever. I think that one colouring blows all competition away, or at least, I've yet to see a colouring better than it.

ummm ...for a panel like the sakura one you just posted , how long does it take you to color it and in what size (pixels)? I know that you can't say exactly but an estimated time would calm my curiosity also how long does a full page take you (approximatively) to color ?
and besides the questions which kodoman put umm when did you first start coloring on the computer ?

Which artists do you get inspired by?

What started you off colouring?

Now that you mention it, paintpixel and DD. Whenever I saw paintpixel's colourings I was always in awe. She has a very classic, very uniform style that's consistently brilliant, but even then is was pretty different from how I liked to paint, and although I loved her style, I was never really motivated to emulate it (though I have more recently looked back at her work to see her technical take on background art and the like). Then I got to more recent chapters and starting seeing DD's work - whose style seems to cover many different styles - and it made me want to try my own hand at it. I think it was DD's cell-style painting of the first page of chapter 315 that actually inspired me to want to colour the pages rather than the covers.

Panels ususually only take me about a day or two (cleaning the panel first eats up loads of time), but those particular Sakura panels took me several days (weeks? i can't remember). I stopped halfway through because I stopped liking the way they looked, but I decided to post them anyway.

And the new panels I'm doing from the recent chapters are as big as the RAW allows. Kylara has been scanning high res RAWS lately (which is fantastic!) so the individual panels are roughly 1000x800. And if the panels are large on the page, about 2000x1000. Ish.

The older panels that I redraw get enlarged to about that same sort of scale.

also how long does a full page take you (approximatively) to color ?

Normally about four days, inbetween procrastination and distractions.

Does that happen a lot? I can't believe you could think that way about your work, but I guess there is no harsher judge then yourself, hey? I really admire you for still posting work that you're not altogether happy with - I know what perfectionists artistic people can sometimes be! That's what I used to respect about Metalanime too, he'd force himself to finish something he'd grown sick of and post it anyway - I think it must take tremendous discipline.


And hoorah! for Manchester! I'm an Aussie based in London, but I've had a few wild pleasurable night outs in Manchester! It's a great place, *coughexceptforManUcough*

It happens at least once with every piece I'm working on. There'll always be a point where I start to hate how it's turning out and nothing seems to be going right - especially when I'm being slow and there are other people posting their own fantastic versions of the very page I'm working on - and I'll want to just throw down the pen, give up and cry.

I usually get over it though. The best way to fight it is to get it done quickly so you're still in the 'this looks great!' mood when you post it. I find that if I take too long to finish it and post it, I find myself beginning to see what's wrong with it. And the longer I work on something, the more I dislike it. I wonder if any of the other artists experience it, but I can post something in the morning that I'm very proud of, but by evening I'm beginning to hate everything about it. XD

I could just be a psycho, I don't know...

And hoorah! for Manchester! I'm an Aussie based in London, but I've had a few wild pleasurable night outs in Manchester! It's a great place, *coughexceptforManUcough*

and yeslool I totally know that feeling! it happens to me every time ......or sometimes it happens from the start (like with the karin cover for those who saw it) I saw so many good colorings of it and then when I started on it , even while choosing the base colors I was like omg this will look like S*#t ....how can I possibly make it look good ... but then got over it by forcing myself on it (worked 4 hours only on the skin) so basically second psycho!!! yay! lol
Anyway about the previous post DD's the one who inspired me to try harder when I was having a very emoish period I found his account on DA and well I saw how he improved and yes I noticed cleaning takes soooo long : lol hmmm for days for a page ^-^ that certainly makes me feel better :P

Well that's certainly a lot better than my first attempt at photoshop. I mean, this is one of my first attempts, but it doesn't hold a candle to how badly I fubared the first attempt (I think I used the magic wand to colour in and the burn tool to shade I wish I still had it to show you)

I did that when I was about 14, and as you can see it's not so different from your first attempt. We've both improved now, and hopefully neither of us will stop improving.

Well, I've only been colouring manga for the last few months. But I've been a digital artist for a lot longer than that.

I don't know why but I thought you didn't like Sakura 0_0' I know....stupid...ejem...but she's incredibly good colored, as the other new panels, I love them soo much! ^^, But the panels which include her seem (to me) colored with...love? I mean, don't misunderstand me please, the pink overtone or the red one...They fit her soo much. I know, I'm paranoid ^o^ LOL

Hope you can finish that double page with Sasuke and that snakes stopping Suigetsu and Juugo when your arm gets better, btw, is it? ^_^

Funny thing is, probably the other artists look at your work and despair too! But it's so great that you all 'get it out there' anyway.

On that note, what is the colouring you are most proud of? And which is the one you like the least?
