RINO is short for "Republican In Name Only" (there's also DINO for "Democrats In Name Only"). I don't see it being an insult, but I guess it can be used as a term to call people a "traitor of the Party" since they're a Democrat/Republican only on paper.
Yeah but how is that racially-charged? lol

Well, the reference there is that it can have antisemitic undertones... So it is not racism against everyone. However based on the article, assuming it is accurate, the situation is specific enough that it would apply only if said to Kushner.... In any case, the whole thing seems to be deep into the alt right subculture or whatnot....
"Globalist" can have antisemitic undertones, depending on the source. But the article states "Republican In Name Only" is racially-charged.

Hmm...
That, I have no idea, really. Maybe "Cuckservative" and "RINO" is a synonym term now.

So, the US army is actually fighting Assad now.
Which is......a little late and a little dangerous.

I thought Hillary Clinton was the warmongerer who wants to fight Assad because she wanted a no fly zone and trump was the cool guy making deals with russia instead?

All I can say right now is fuck Trump and his supporters. Trump needs to be impeached and get thrown in jail. Fifty missiles at Syria... and some are saying that he's doing it to distract people from him committing treason or some shit.

Nothing about this is something that would warrant trump being thrown in jail, it is all well within his authority to do this. As for the "people are saying he is doing it to distract people...."... What are you talking about? Without a source that is more or less the sort of thing fox news would report....

I am not sure there is much danger to the US here. If anything, this might actually work out for trump. I could be wrong but this could change the syria situation a fair bit. The chemical attacks shows they were getting a tad bold so a response like this to deter attacks makes sense. Adding to that, russia can do precisely squat about this unless they are willing to nuke someplace. Iran can get pissed at the US but... they were already angry. I guess the region as a whole could react to this but what that reaction would be is a tad unpredictable IMO. At least I don't have enough info to speculate.

Realistically speaking, the biggest drawback this could have for trump russia wise is that their propaganda machine finally turns on trump. Unless of course they decide this is not worth giving up their good relationship this trump. Then again, the support for trump was never about supporting trump but rather destabilizing the US.
--- Double Post Merged, ---
I guess the big risk here would be that trump from here rather than try to get the area a bit under control under the threat of more attacks like that he instead simply chooses to continue attacks and escalate the conflict and US involvement. Basically, an invasion. But that does not seem to be particularly close yet...

Nah, I hope this starts the process. Hasn't he tried to commit treason by encouraging Russian hackers to hack into the email servers and get Hillary's lost emails?

I'm not sure what distraction. As I said, I got that based on what some people said.

Well, I can only hope that this decision is made swiftly and succeeds. However, if they're going with the plan to take out Assad, then I can only hope that Trump gets ready for the aftermath of the Civil War (if he'll leave it as it is, then it will turn into another Libya).

I don't expect things to escalate here tbh. Russia still backing Assad and I don't see Trump getting hostile to Russia over Syria. I heard the attacks were in the airbases which are suspected to have chemical weapons stored.

Trump will be meeting Xi. This is a way to send a message that he might do same to NK.

I don't think trump actually aims to take out assad. His position so far seems to have been more in the assad stays in power camp. I don't think that what we are seeing now is yet evidence to suggest trump suddenly changed his position on assad at least. Well, to be fair though what he just did is a serious flip from the position he had that he wasn't going to get more involved in these conflicts.

I am not sure if Syria and Libya can be compared in this regard. Libya was a NATO thing in that regard. Obama did lament the US was not ready for the post war thing but that doesn't make all of it his fault, there is plenty of blame to go around in that area. As for trump, I wouldn't bet on him having the foresight to plan for a post civil war Syria.

In any case, as far as I can guess, there are two things that can come out of this: The first would be that trump uses this show of force to get a better bargaining position with Syria and Russia. This would be a very trumpian thing to do. Though the US has a weaker image now than it had under obama considering the recent, significant at that, increase in civilian casualties in US airstrikes. I can't say how weakened exactly though and even that is a bit of a guess of mine, it's not exactly like there is polling going on there regarding US approval (not that I know of). Adding to that the russian propaganda machine flipping on trump... The other scenario would be that rather than this helping the US have a stronger bargaining position it results in shit escalating and the US finally either stopping their support of Syrian rebels or they have to invade the damn place. Neither of which would be a win for trump. Several things have to go wrong for either to be under consideration and both are bad for trump.

It depends how things unfold after the airstrike. If Russia does nothing and abandons Assad, then it would clear out any potential conflict against Russia while the focus on Assad can be clear. However, I'm expecting Russia would say something or even do something for that matter. Guess we'll have to wait and see...

At this point, he already decided to intercept into the Syrian War with the airstrikes, so it really wouldn't be surprising if he decides to go after Assad.

Which is why I said it's possible to prevent Syria from becoming another Libya if done correctly, by helping the Syrians and rebuild their nation (it has worked after World War 2 with the Marshall Plan, but the problem is that Trump's "America First" policy won't tolerate such a plan).

I read somewhere that Russian defence minister Lavrov compared the airstrikes with Iraq invasion. I don't see Russia abandoning Assad now after all the troubles they have gone through to keep him on power.

That's an odd comparison considering the Iraq bit was, well, an invasion and this was an airstrike. With that in mind I would argue he is simply trying to inflame opinions against trump. I hate defending trump because I disagree with the vast majority of his agenda and proposals but this is a case where that specific criticism doesn't apply yet. Besides, the comparison perhaps will never be relevant at all. Iraq was a relatively stable country with a brutal dictator. The war was actually started by the US and after years of fighting things became bad when the US left and the iraq government was not able to hold it's position well enough. Even if the US invaded Syria, just the fact that their civil war started independently of the US would makes this into an entirely different situation. It wouldn't be "another iraq". A comparison which would make a bit of sense would be Libya but even they were never actually invaded.

I wonder if perhaps the russian response to this would be them being more aggressive in aiding Assad. Basically, a bolder russia in Syria. Of course, I doubt they would dare to directly attack the US (I am not sure if there are any US troops there, I think there aren't). but they would carry out attacks in response which they wouldn't have before against rebels. At which point we have... Basically a dick measuring contest between the US and Russia in Syria.

Edit: There are US troops at Syria. It's not implausible that they would be at greater risk as a result.
Edit: Reading on this a bit, it does not seem like trump has explained what his own endgame is. I guess his answer to that would be "I want to keep my plans a secret" though seeing how he usually is I would venture the guess that he does not have an endgame. It seems like Spicer did not even answer whether it was still a US priority to remove assad. Soooo.... the waiting game begins.

I think someone in the trumpsphere (gonna call it that) has convinced him that he needs to distance himself from alt right and russia.
It makes sense to abandon bannon if he had indeed close ties to russia and then do something that was guaranteed to bring back a response from russia.

So the strike itself already was the endgame i guess. There will not be any follow up by either the US or russia in my opinion, because it does nothing to assad.

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. You have bannon having reduced power along with his apparent confrontations with kuschner all at once while the US also specifically antagonizes russia. I am not sure he was straight up abandoned though, he was just removed from the security council or whatever. In any case his demotion being connected to trump's flip on syria and russia is plausible too.

I could see that being the case though for me it would be a tad disturbing that they don't have a plan for now. Given the circumstances all the possibilities are scary. Him not having a plan (how incompetent can he be), him having a plan (holy shit what is it?), this being it (eeerrrrrhhhhh).... I think there will be a follow up on russia's part but it won't necessarily show as a military strike. Putin, like trump, relies on strongman tactics. But to do that he needs to appear tough. With that in mind, there is likely to be some form of retaliation even if it is not necessarily military retaliation.

Question, is there anything else democrats could have done to block the new supreme court justice? I see people on the progressive end complaining about that but I don't see what else democrats could have done. They got the votes to filibuster, republicans went ahead and got rid of the filibuster. What else could have happened here that democrats did not do?

You know, I almost enjoy the kuschner-bannon drama. That is some GOT shit right there. Shame that it is happening in the cabinet of the most powerful man in the world. On the upside, it does seem like bannon is slowly getting phased out. I guess that will be the first step of trump's slow transition from an insane republican to a less insane one, which would be a generic republican.

I wonder though, does trump enjoy the bannon-kuschner conflict? I think he could actually enjoy the infighting and think it makes him a good manager.... Kinda like having them duke it out for supremacy and the best one remains.

How sad is it that soon to be former trump supporters blame ivanka and kuschner for trump doing stuff they don't like? The dumbasses actually thought trump was on their side... Regardless of how this kuschner-bannon thing turns out, trump's side is only his own... His ideological loyalties are so weak he even went with paul ryan's healthcare bill without even reading it....

I think Trump is completely overchallenged with finding consensus between the factions who try to control him.

He knows that Ivanka and Kuschner but also the republicans and the alt right pundits can create pressure for him (and probably some other interest groups that we do not even know abou depending on possible illegal behaviour).
And Trump is not a guy who is able to make a call and defend it even when people get upset about it, not when those are 'his' people.

He seems to always just opt for whatever someone told him and that seems to make people stop annoying him.
