I never had much use for this annoying piece of shit, but this might be one of the dumbest pieces of content I've ever seen him put out. Wasn't this guy one of the pillars of the #Resistance libs? Him being insanely out of touch was always obvious but dear god. Him reporting on how "normal" and nice Trump was to him during a dinner...well I guess that will make people feel better about him cratering the economy and the government disappearing people... like holy shit. And the audience fucking guffawing at him over this nonsense, please put them in straightjackets.

Ah, a tale as old as time. "Hey, I met Fidel Castro, turns out he is super nice/funny/sociable/charming!". Yeah, autocrats tends to be charismatic. charisma is a weapon autocrats use to win people over to their cause. Charisma glitches our brains, we should be skeptical of it, not swarm towards it like moths.

Maher's been shitty about a ton of things over the years. Especially vaccines. And it's so annoying because he keeps attacking Trump on like a weekly basis. It doesn't mean anything if you don't keep the same energy when you meet the man. By that logic he's just as fake as Trump is, because they had different energy by the time they were face to face.

It's the perfect example of what people call "aesthetic liberalism", like sure he'll probably still continue to shit on Trump but note how completely absent any critique of Trump being anti-free speech is. Which is the most important thing (kinda ONLY) to Maher and figures like him, but not any of the other issues. It really does seem he just detests MAGAs because of how stupid they are and not over of much of the substance of policy differences.

But don't worry guys, he was totally charming and affable to him in person and they found out they agree on most things even though there's no stated reason why that should be the case. It really isn't too much of a stretch that he'd ostensibly support at least some of the things Trump has done if it came from Obama or Clinton.

His atheist activism is pretty much the same thing. It's just shitting on religion (which I mean... based), but never actually promoting secular humanism or engaging with religious people beyond "You know you believe in dumb shit, right?" Matt Dillahunty doesn't want anything to do with him because of his problems with the movie he made about religion (Religulous or whatever it was).

I hope John Stewart makes a visit on the show sometime soon. Or calls Maher onto his show. I still remember the good old days of him making appearances on Fox News and pulling no punches.

That's why one shouldn't easily trust people who claim to be liberal or "on the left" but are "against wokeness". They all go down that path eventually.

It really is time to wrestle power out of the hands of these people.

How do we wrest power from a tyrannical government?

I think France was onto something back during the French Revolution. I mean, their king was working with other nations to undermine their own. That sounds a lot like Trump if you ask me.

In a successful change, there is never just one strategy. There is a multitude of people that try different things and some of them are really effective. Every little bit of resistance counts, whether it is legal or nonlegal, constructive or disruptive.

If you ask what to do, it is best to look what groups around you are to your liking and aid in one of them, whether it is a protest, donations, organizing or even neighbourhood help. It can obiously also be helping a campaign that you like.

In Iran, when people were abducted, spontanously crowds gathered and often successfully stopped it.

You only learn what stategy is best for you when you try some out.

At least leftwing democratsand activists seem to be generally on the right track right now, talking about mutual aid.

That moment when the solution to the issue of trump potentially ending democracy is... ending democracy. Yeah, that checks out.

I do not think "potentially" is the right word anymore.

You say that, but France voted on whether or not to impeach Louis XVI from the position of "alive" and came to a consensus. That's democracy.

That's still not the same by any stretch of the imagination. Trump was democratically elected in an election where everyone agreed on the result. He was elected for a full term. Not liking trump isn't a justification to get rid of him. Add to that, he is mostly doing what he promised on the campaign trail and has a reasonably strong mandate to do given the election results (however stupid and/or unhinged). Worse of all, in spite of all of this trump's still not as unpopular as biden was most of his presidency. And if that's not enough, trump has the police and military on his side. As far as revolutions go the left in the US is comically underequipped. Not even in terms of hardware but in terms of ideas. Democrat leadership stands for nothing and the collection of left center and left wingers behind them can't agree on anything. To the best of our knowledge less than two years from now there will be midterms and less than 4 years from now trump's term will come to an end, however destructive, and there will be an election that will produce another democratically elected president. As long as that doesn't change the US is still a democracy and that's where anyone with democratic values should be looking at (while not ignoring that it's important to do politics and fight for policy even with trump in office).

??

Not everyone agreed on the result, and likability isn't why people want to get rid of him, it's because of the policies he and other republicans are putting into place and the terrorism they're committing that people want him out. To add to that, Elon might have tampered with the elections as well.

It is if it's done democratically. What can be done democratically can be undone democratically.

Mostly lmfao? Did he promise to destroy our reputation with our allies? Give Ukraine to Russia? Crash the economy? Deport Americans? Ignore the law? The answer is no, lol. The literal only things he promised to do that he's accomplished is getting rid of illegals, and he fucked that up by deporting non illegals, and claiming that their are only 2 genders which the average person doesn't give a fuck about. Said he'd end the war between Russia and Ukraine on Day 1 btw, but he never said "I'm going to betray Ukraine to do it." Promised to fix the price of groceries but instead guaranteeing groceries AND EVERYTHING ELSE IN THE COUNTRY is more expensive lmfao.

Jesus.

Except it's very quickly becoming more than a Left vs. Right thing. It's a "haves vs. have-nots" thing. And that working class is filled with Conservatives raised since childhood to believe they need an AR-15 so they can defend against a tyrannical government. It just takes a push. This is what they've been preparing for their entire lives! Time to put their money where their mouths are.

Donald Trump is treading. Let's see if that Gadsden flag is just for show.

Yeah that's time enough for people to cool down on their righteous fervor. Long enough for the podcast circuit to work its magic and keep the culture ignorant. Long enough to keep sensationalizing negative LGBTQ propaganda. You're asking us to just let it get worse.

To the extent I followed US elections (which is not a small amount) no one brought any legitimate accusations of fraud up. Democrats conceded, the election got certified and things moved on as they should have. None of the lawsuits raised at states on ballots got anywhere. It was all business as usual. And don't get me wrong, it's 100% the case that someone out there didn't think the election was fair or was stolen or something like that but that's just a factor of living in a world with 8 billion people, not real things that can be backed up with evidence.

Well, sure, but then, what's the democratic path to getting rid of trump other than time? There's basically zero chance of his stooges using the 25th amendment. And if they do you're all trap with JD vance as president.

Kinda? It's not like US the US walked out of the 2016 with it's reputation untouched. And it was followed by biden's term which didn't exactly look good from the outside. You guys were circus trying to squeeze meaning out of the incoherent babbling of a dementia patient. This term is basically trump's 2016 term except all adults in the room were catapulted away. All the career republican politicians that kept him in check back then were rewarded with being unceremoniously kicked out of the party. No one who failed to capitulate to trump remained and anyone who does has made an art of kissing his ass (say, marco rubio). As far as ukraine, come on, we were all thinking he had it in him to betray them. We were just waiting for the fear to materialize. Heck, who would even be surprised if trump "declassified" information to putin?

I mean, I could be misreading the room here but do you really think the AR15 crowd finds trump to be tyrannical?

Yeah that's time enough for people to cool down on their righteous fervor. Long enough for the podcast circuit to work its magic and keep the culture ignorant. Long enough to keep sensationalizing negative LGBTQ propaganda. You're asking us to just let it get worse.
Hmm, why? The stuff trump is doing with trade will take way longer than a few years to fix. china is clearly up to something, very probably at least trying to take advantage of the chaos trump unilaterally started to better position itself on the world stage. I suppose china could blink soon but right now they seem to be signaling that they will let trump continue to make thing worse. If "righteous fervor" cools down then that's on US folk, a random ass non resident alien me who thinks ending democracy is a bad idea.
