The republicans are crying about gas prices compared to democrats. The democrats don't care about gas prices though, these same people are fine with paying more money and having less to pay rent. No wonder they're homeless!! We have all these efficient and cheap energy sources but California wants to try to rely on renewable energy costing us more money. The democrats make themselves homeless, and after doing that, they request communism and more socialism because they used up all their own money. Haha! Once homeless people move to California, many of them get infected by the radical democrat ideas, no wonder they need mental health assistance! You would think the state stealing the most money from their citizens through taxation would have more to give to the homeless, but nope! All these democrats who claim to care about coronavirus but then vote Newsom who just ends up NOT wearing his mask or social distancing, if that's your best guy, then I feel bad for you democrats! It's already proven that democrat's TOP CHOICE is an incompetent failure who can't follow his own rules, that is called CHAOS. hahahahaha. LIES AND HYPOCRISY RIGHT INFRONT OF YOUR EYES from the democrats!!
To be fair, neither republicans nor democrats can do jack shit about gas prices. Well, it is technically possible they could do a little but it would basically amount to some variety of using the government's muscle to somehow push gas prices down which would in turn hurt corporate profits which is not something either party has a stomach for anyways.

They could if we nationalized oil refinement, but of course neither Republican or Democrat would be for that in any major way

What exactly do you mean by nationalizing it? As in, the government taking ownership? What I had in mind roughly, though I have no idea if its feasible, practical or smart, is something like forcing US oil companies to first meet local demand and only export what's left after that. I know some countries do this sort of thing with other products and it appears to work. But of course, at the expense of those sweet overseas profits (and also overseas consumers). The government taking ownership of the oil is 110% a bad idea IMO. By current republican standards (and to a large degree democrat standards) either is pretty much communism and an attack on private businesses. Although at least in this case nationalizing oil actually is socialism.

So like, going cold turkey on russian energy?

On that note, a few reports say ukraine is actually recovering territory. When do the nukes start flying?

The issue here is that the entire economy revolves around fuel. You could say the US lost 3-8% of it's supply with banning Russian imports, yet prices didn't only increase 3-8% did they? It's price gouging, and I think it's immoral for something like this to have that kind of profit-motive. This shouldn't be a thing that happens, and I doubt anyone is fine with it unless they're AnCap or something.

Well yeah, the idea would never fly, especially not with Republicans. Profit is the only thing they are concerned with.

So like, going cold turkey on russian energy?
Yes. Or at least do the next best thing, which is strongly taxing that energy.

The german gas reserves are holding for 3 months if nothing is added to them. I would assume that Italians also have some reserves, possibly even more. I don't think Russia can even keep going for 3 months and of course we get other kinds of gas in the meantime, so it would be closer to 6 months.

That is a gamble and i'd rather not do it, but I think it needs to be done now.

They are. Honestly, the only thing that keeps Ukraine from recovering all the territory right now is that they cannot fight back against some of the russian aircrafts, at least not in a good way. Or against long range missiles.
Once they get that Tech from the west, they can actually beat the russians back.

It depends? I don't think it's necessarily unreasonable that prices increase by more than what the supply decrease. Depends on the market. That doesn't rule out price gouging of course.

In fairness that wouldn't be a good idea. Money in politics is bad enough in its current form. Imagine what it'd to if it becomes billions or trillions in nationalized oil... better alternative? Tax the absolute shitznit out of it. It's not like US oil is going anywhere or it can be drilled from china.

Don't get me wrong, I support sanctioning russia into a fifth world country. As far as I am concerned that's cheap, easy and effective warfare. Or at least cheaper, easier and more effective than actual warfare (no one seems to be able to win wars nowadays). But this kinda reads like kamikaze. I mean, sure, the russian's economy would be tanked. But... there's a timer on the EU economy being tanked into the third world as well. Which regardless of the war is a fairly desirable goal for putin's obsolete empire game.
--- Double Post Merged, ---

To me the bigger question regarding russian aircraft is.. how long can russia sustain it? Missiles cost tens of thousands of dollars or even more and keeping an airplane airborne is also ridiculously expensive. This is warfare for rich countries, not third world countries like russia. If aircraft and missiles is what is preventing ukraine from advancing more.. Uff.

Let me say it this way: If Putin thought he could force the EU into the third world, he would.
An energy embargo would have very severe effects on the EU, i am not going to deny that.
A rise in unemployment
Companies that might not be able to produce due to lacking energy.
Rationing heating.

But it can be manageable, at least many experts think that. It would also have the positive effect of forcing us into green energy, that is something we will have to do either way.

But the biggest reason for it is that we just cannot allow putin's war to be supported by our countries. This is a duty that we have to face, even if it will hurt us too.

That is the point. He cannot do it for long and the time is even shorter if the ramp up sanctions. THat is why i believe Russia cannot keep going until the effects on us (with the energy embargo) become really bad. They have trouble to keep going right now.

To me, it is about the west stating a goal. The goal should be "ukraine needs to win this conflict completely and force russian soldiers out of its complete territory". If we state that goal, we can talk about what the smallest necessary action to achieve it is.

Idk, the status quo of unmitigated profit while everyone gets fucked at the pump with no serious initiative for energy alternatives is preferable?

IMO this is absolutely preferable to nationalized oil. What country with nationalized oil has actually progressed? With nationalized oil everyone still gets fucked at the pump and the government absorbed trillions of dollars ripe for corruption.

Well... I think laying that at the feet of them having nationalized refineries and nothing else is kind of myopic, lol

It would never happen in the first place, but if it did, the result would probably not be the same IMO

Nothing you say makes sense or is even remotely correct. You also seem to be one of those republicans that'll criticize Dems for something they didn't do or had nothing to do, but when a Dem or a left criticizes republicans with actual proof, you cry and say we should all get along.

It's funny how republicans don't know anything about socialism or communism, they just call anything they don't like communist or socialist. Anyone who knows USA's history knows that the economy and the people have suffered more under Republicans in the 20th and 21st centuries while Democrat presidents have saved the economy or made it better.

You're so embarrassing, but 99% of republicans are.

I am not sorry I offended you!
I don't take you seriously at all for you to offend me, don't worry about it.

The way the republican politicians were questioning Ketanji Brown Jackson though... The GOP really is full of immature dipshits.

All 3 of Trump's Supreme Court picks were picked solely because of their potential less-than-friendly opinion towards a certain landmark decision from the 1970s that the majority of the people in this country have no interest in relitigating. And of the 3 only one of them was considered to have the qualifications to even hold the position of Justice in the first place.

So is that less of an issue than someone having the credentials but being nominated because they're part of an underrepresented demographic? People can nominate whoever they want, but they should be qualified first and foremost, no?

Curious to know what everyone's plan for rising food costs is.

Pay more for food... or... starve?

Not sure what you expect people to say

I agree with you, they were both picked because they're both competent and know how to do their jobs, unlike Trump and his picks.
