They need to be abolished, not defunded.
You're doing the same thing they're doing, getting hung up on minutiae. There are many avenues to reform, and none of them include increasing their budgets.

Problem is that they can't be reformed. How do you reform a system where police will protect the bad ones and punish the ones who speak up? When despite the protests and everything ,they continue to get violent and attack or kill anyway? They don't want to be reformed, they want to keep their power and be able to abuse others without accountability. Defunding won't do a thing but make them act like children and refuse to do their jobs.

I'm talking about reforming criminal justice, not necessarily individual police officers

Yet people still want to act like cop apologia is in anyone's best interests. As if calling for bloated budgets to be slashed is demonic. As if precincts across the country don't routinely act with their own interests in mind and not with what's best for citizens that they swore oaths to protect.

Pigs will continue to be pigs, until they're forced to do better. That is what "defund the police" is about.
Yeah. I wish they'd worded it less frighteningly so more centrists would get behind it. "Defund The Police" seems to be a bridge too far for people that aren't super ultra mega left. And that means further left folk are made to look crazy, and are ostracized from the rest of the left. We all need to focus on our messaging.

As for the defunding, think of all the social programs that portion of the police budget could be spent towards. Programs that could prevent a lot of kids from resorting to criminal behavior in the first place, to start.

Defunding the police is bad messaging? I am shocked at that revelation.

I held out hope that people would be smart enough to dismiss it as just bad branding while looking at the arguments in favor of it instead but... nope. We have to baby these dorks into voting in their own best interest.

It's annoying.

I mean, yeah? This isn't even a US thing, it's the same everywhere. And even worst, actually getting rid of this slogan is going to require A LOT of extremely competent messaging, time and effort. Democrats by now have tattooed this into their foreheads. It's been burned into voter's retinas. For years to come opponents to police reform will be able to frame any policy for law enforcement reform as defunding the police. And this isn't on voters, this is on idiots who suck at messaging. For a party that allegedly supports gun control democrats sure do shot themselves in the foot non stop.

Democrats: DEFUND THE POLICE!
Voters: What? That sounds like a terrible idea.
Democrats: I mean, not literally, only lunatics believe that. You gotta google and read through a bunch of articles to get the full context of an idea that hasn't materialized into specific policy proposals yet.
Voters: THE FUCK DOES THAT MEAN!?

Centrists would never, regardless, I think. The messaging could be perfect, and they'd still not be on board because vast majority have been brainwashed to think cops are good and necessary.

in the meanwhile, Dems are actually increasing funding to cops, and voters are seeing that happen.

Police aren't the same everywhere. The average police department in the US could outgun local military outfits in most countries.

My post was about "defund the police" as a slogan and messaging, not the military capabilities of a given county or however they are distributed.

.... So? You can't reasonably expect the majority of the population being against that. It's absurd. Not sure of what your point is or how it relates to my post.

It's related though, because corruption or misuse of power when you're outfitted with assault vehicles and weapons has different implications

Obviously, I"m saying that the Democratic politicians are full of shit and that they're actually not defunding the police, they're doing the opposite. It's the centrists and the right that are too stupid to notice that and think Dems are about defunding and weren't lying. They were talking about defunding for the first few months of protests, but after that died that, they did the opposite. At this point, anything short of sucking the cops' dicks won't be accepted by anyone that's not to the left of center or know how shitty the cops are.

This is an example of why reformation is impossible, and why we need to just get rid of the whole organization.

Isn't this a situation where politicians, realizing how bad the slogan is, didn't get on board with it? I don't think we ever actually saw most democrats onboard with this. You are never getting the majority of the population onboard with "defund the police".

If that's the case then all you can do is buckle up, embrace defeat and accept things will never change. Not in your lifetime at least. Barring something staggering happening that turns the plurality of the population against the police institution. As in, it'd take something that puts police brutality and/or we have seen over the past decade to shame. Reforming in turn is something which has a small chance of happening.

no, this is a situation where politicians pretended to get on board with it temporarily and then reversed the defund to even more funding than before. They were doing shit like kneeling and whatnot to pretend showing support for Black people.

Nothing will change unless we start taking action, whether that's revolution or getting violent.

If everyone has a concealed weapon, the safer we'll all be, right?

"I want to emphasize that South Street is manned by numerous police officers," Pace said. "This is standard deployment for Friday and Saturday night - weekends - and especially during the summer months."

Philadelphia police said a separate shooting incident happened nearby around 11 p.m. Officers found 13 bullet casings at 4th and Bainbridge, a couple blocks away. Pace said investigators are looking into whether there's a connection in the two shootings.

Officers had the area between 2nd and 5th streets on South Street blocked off overnight.

This story is developing. Check back for updates.
