Great final! It's so refreshing seeing two non-ishgarian(Irene is loyal to Alvarez after all and so is August in spite of their connections to Ishgar) mages in the finals of our tournament!
I'm bothered by the argument of dragon Irene being plainly stronger than August and August being an equal to human Irene.
If we are going with what was stated, then August is an equal to Irene. Just Irene. No mention of human or dragon. However, we can argue that Brandish didn't know of Irene's dragon form.
Then we try to recall and inspect what both characters stated.
If we are going by NARRATIVE portrayal, then August has been hinted to be superior to Irene. Hinted to by both parties, I believe.
With Irene stating herself to be the strongest female amongst the twelve while she was battling Erza and Wendy.
August stated himself to be the strongest MAGE amongst the twelve.
Portrayal, storywise, also hints at August being stronger. In a shounen manga, stronger antagonists are typically reserved for later stages. August was the last spriggan standing for a reason. He was the most potent.
You could doubt his words as to being strongest, but that would betray the character he was written to be. Critical and acknowledging.
If we go by feats then both were pretty impressive but were written out quite sloppily by Hiro. August performed better though and I take that as him being more potent as a character to have been defeated through the same means other characters were defeated in. In a way, he was too strong a character to be defeated the conventional way (beaten to a pulp), this alluding to him being the superior among all spriggans.
This is the best direct comparison I can come up with considering assuming the limits and capacities of both mages (heavily slept on in the manga, both of them ) would be pretty inaccurate.
My VOTE goes to
August.
