I'm just doubting that your analysis is accurate, I guess we can still keep it up, if someone wants to add something, or maybe when we get some indication that things are the way you say they are.
Also the fact that we already discussed CoC a great deal before this, this is why we prolly don't see how it can be used to intimidate people. We already know what it's used for, and I doubt it allowing Luffy to intimidate his opponents will be a game changer.
Possibly, I can see your point. I've only had this change in perspective to CoC recently, I'll experiment with it for the mean time and see how consistent it wil be in future. Atm I'm fairly confident with it, lol.

If I could compare CoC to anything and I hate using parallels from other anime; if bleach I'd say spiritual pressure? It wouldn't knock an opponent out except they were fodder, but it imposes on the opponent and pressurises them without contact.

Well of course you're free to express your opinion :). But it doesn't mean we'll all agree, especially if there isn't some definite proof. I guess it's still up as long as we don't have something that can disprove your theory :^_^. I just find that unlikely tbh.

Totally understandable, scepticism is the best position to take in light of new theories; that way they can get better refined and at the very worst, it eliminates a theory which draws us closer to better deductions should there still be mystery about CoC. I just hope Oda shows us more of it, lol.

According to the latest databook (blue deep I guess) there are three levels of haki:

1 novice - That is used unconscious (like when Ace was a kid in Gray Terminal)
2 middle - That is used conscious (Rayleigh)
3 advanced - The strongest one, when is used contunously and affect the environment (Shanks on Whitebeard ship)

Conqueror's haki

Reading through different translations and even the anime, I've been looking for keywords to see just how much Rayleigh's explanation was alluding to intimidation.

These are explanations Rayleigh gave about Conqueror's haki and consequences of lack of control:
Viz Translation: This is the power to overwhelm; the colour of the supreme king. - You'll end up overwhelming people you don't intend to.
Mangastream: This is the power to intimidate the opponent, haki with the Colour of the conqueror. - You must not use it until you can control it complete, otherwise you'll intimidate innocent people around you as well.
Mangapanda: This is the ability to overpower the the opponent's will, it's called Sovereign haki. - Otherwise, you'll find yourself overpowering even those innocent bystanders around you.
What does this mean?

One thing Rayleigh has done concerning Conqueror's haki is he mentioned Luffy must learn to control it or else as stated by different translations:
Note: Bare in mind Conqueror's haki only affects individuals on a mental or psychological level, it has no physical application.
  • Intimidate innocent bystanders psychologically.
  • Overwhelm the innocent psychologically.
  • Overpower the innocent psychologically.
Hypothetically speaking, if Rayleigh said if you don't learn to Control your Conqueror's haki, you'll burn innocent people around you, surely that mean Conqueror's haki burns people in general.

Rayleigh said it'll intimidate, overpower, overwhelm if unable to control Conqueror's haki so it must mean that Conqueror's haki in general intimidates. Overpower and Overwhelm more or less mean intimidate too to a good degree, so Conqueror's haki being something else seems pretty unlikely based on current information in the manga.

Rayleigh's general explanation of all the haki types

Also in the initial explanation of haki (in general) to Luffy, the Viz Manga translation and those alike always include words that have to do with intimidation. The translations breaks down haki like this:
Haki is a power that lies dormant in all the world's creatures, "presence", "fighting spirit" and "intimidation".
- Mangastream
Mangastream breaks down Haki in to Presence alluding to Observation haki, Fighting spirit (probably Armament haki) and Intimidation which is most likely Conqueror's haki.

Haki is a power that exists within every human being, "presence" "spirit" "Aura"
- Mangapanda
Mangapanda is a bit vague starting off with Presence (Observation haki), Spirit (probably Armament haki) and Aura which is likely Conqueror's haki and roughly similar to the Mangastream translation.

Haki is a power that lies dormant in people everywhere, the ability to sense the spiritual energy and overpower enemies.
- Viz Translation
Viz Translation seemed to group both Observation haki and Armament haki into "Spiritual Energy" and Conqueror's haki into "Overpowering enemies".
Going by translation at least and even anime translations too, intimidation seems to be consistently mentioned or implied at the very least.

Red Hair didn't spread his CoC through the entire Moby Dick

Note: Red Hair didn't board Whitebeard's ship with intention to fight, however he protected himself with CoC incase any of Whitebeard's subordinates made attempts at his life.
There's a common misunderstanding that Red Hair blared out his Conqueror's haki throughout Whitebeard's entire ship, and Marco along with Jozu were unaffected. However, that's not the case because Conqueror's haki affects anyone exposed to it even if they retain consciousness.

Before Red Hair arrived, Marco told all the newcomers to stay back, that they wouldn't survive Red Hair's Conqueror's haki; some newcomers didn't listen and ended up being knocked out unconscious. One thing that need be understood is for Marco to have said stay back, it unequivocally means that if the newcomers had stood back as Marco stated, they wouldn't be unconscious.

We know that some of the newcomers either just didn't listen out of ignorance or were simply too late, they didn't stay back as Marco suggested and ended up losing consciousness.

We know the newcomers got knocked out, but those aren't the only newcomers on the ship, there are others. We know there are other newcomers on the ship besides the ones who are unconscious because one of them asked what was happening when they saw their comrades fall. Marco had to explain to them what was going on; this means these guys aren't veterans, because if they were, they'd know what just occured was because of Conqueror's haki.

Another thing to take note of is the fact that the newcomers that got knocked out are all in front of Marco and Jozu.

When Marco said stayback, he meant the area around where he was and where everyone else was; that was the Safe Zone. Jozu was behind the railings along with everyone else while Marco was sat on the railings literally with everyone else which means they were standing in areas where Red Hair's Conqueror's haki was not in reach.

If we go back to where Jozu and Marco were standing or sat at before Shanks arrived, they were both sat and standing much further away from the railings. We can conclude that the reason they themselves moved back too was to stay out of the zone that Red Hair's CoC was going to cover.

Lastly, if Red Hair's Haki was spread throughout the ship, the one has to ask why did Marco tell the newcomers to stay back in the first place if they were going to be knocked out irregardless? Marco and Jozu are literally standing in the midst of the newcomers, if Red Hair's haki was spread through the entire ship, then are these newcomers beside Marco and Jozu strong enough to not be knocked out like the other newcomers? I don't think so.

Based on the fact that:
  • Marco warned the newcomers about standing in the Unsafe Zone.
  • We're made aware of other newcomers due to the fact they didn't know what CoC was.
  • Marco and Jozu are also standing with the newcomers.
One can conclude that Marco and Jozu were not affected or intimidated by Red Hair's Conqueror's haki because they were in the safe zone like every other newcomer; one of the points being made is Conqueror's haki cannot be resisted, except by those who possess the ability to oppose it and that's other Conqueror haki users.

Had Marco and Jozu been caught in Red Hair's Conqueror's haki, they'd have been intimidated just like everyone was at Marineford when Luffy briefly released his haki; we can tell from both their expressions and reaction that they were briefly intimidated, or they'd have ignored it.

I've always had this same theory as you do about CoC. It just seems to make the most sense that it does intimidate people whether they pass out or not. If one is willing to accept that the reason someone passes out is because they're will was too weak and was overpowered by the user of CoC, then the fact that it intimidates should be apparent. I mean what else would you call it to have your will dominated by another persons will?

I also think that CoC can actually augment your other haki as well. The reason I think this is that every time we have had a clash of CoC, they're have been more shock waves from the clashes, with the clashes being one of CoA visually while the text has said it is one of CoC. We've seen other CoA users fight including CoC users and only when they mention it is a clash of CoC did we get shock waves. DD vs Luffy is a good example of this since they have blocked each others CoA attacks with CoA but those blocks did not end in shock waves, while a seemingly simple block of DD's attempt to trample Law's head did.

It does appear like that, but I also think it could be the fact they're attempting to intimidate the other that intensifies the situation, but I did feel like it augmented their Armament haki too.

Well, we can not say much about Haoshoku. Shanks was able to affect even dead objects and in one game it was stated that he can slow down time thanks to Haoshoku. So we can say that it not only affects living beings but also dead objects and even space. We can say that Haoshoku is power of will but what is power of will? Power of will is equal to life force. So what you can do with life force? You can use it to strengthen attacks or even create destructive shock waves. Everything depends on Oda and how far he will go with Haoshoku.

Whitebeard's CoC

Note: Before reading, it's best to read exactly what CoC does HERE.

Whitebeard's use of CoC is easily missed if not understanding what CoC does and the devices that Oda uses to indicate use of CoC in both the Anime and Manga. I believe the Manga complelments the Anime by portraying minute details that can't be achieved in the Anime, and the Anime can go into more depth in scenes and use more visual cues to point out specific things as will be shown shortly.

Situations requiring Conqueror's Haki
Assuming you've read what CoC does, or are yet to do so, there are 2 instances where CoC is best be used:
  • To defeat an army or group when outnumbered to even out the battlefied like seen on Fishman Island⁽¹⁾.
  • Or to Intimidate (essentially weakening) one very powerful individual⁽²⁾.
The Situation in Marineford

The battle of Marineford was fought by 2 great forces; the Marines had a lot of men, as did Whitebeard who came with 43 fleets. Though, the Whitebeard Pirates were slightly outnumbered⁽³⁾, it was nothing on the scale of 10 people against 100,000. Whitebeard entered the war with enough men to fight the Marines; it'd be a waste for Whitebeard to have used it to knock out fodder being that, he had enough foot soldiers to take on the Marine's soldiers.

Bare in mind, Conqueror Haki masters can choose who to knock out in a crowd just like Rayleigh did in the Auction at Sabaody⁽⁴⁾, and Luffy did against Joker despite Law being in the way⁽⁵⁾; if even Luffy at this stage can pick out who to use his Conqueror's Haki against, then so can Whitebeard.

With that said, we know he has enough allies to fight against an army, so he's not terrible outnumbered. By the process of elimination, the only scenario that'd really require Whitebeard using his CoC is in a one-on-one situation.

Blue Screen of Conqueror's Haki/Intimidation
When Conqueror's or Contrived-Intimidation is being employed, a Blue screen appears as shown in the following panels:
  • When Luffy used Haoshioku at Marineford, the Blue screen device appears.
  • When Luffy uses Conqueror's Haki at Fishman Island, the Blue screen device appears.

Akainu vs. Whitebeard

Akainu is strong enough to fight Whitebeard's entire fleet, so he's an opponent worth using Conqueror's haki on being that he's a formidable opponent for anyone. It's smarter to weaken an individual like Akainu, than an entire army because, an army's strength even in numbers, can't replace the strength of an Admiral.

As shown below, Akainu froze when Whitebeard appeared behind him. We know he's not slow, and Whitebeard even announced his appearance behind Akainu by stamping his Baisento on the ground which means Akainu could have dodged it. However, we know Conqueror's Haki instills fear, which is why he was frozen and unable to briefly compose himself and make a rational move.

Thanks for reading.

Red Hair Shank's CoC

Note: Before reading, it's best to read exactly what CoC does HERE.

Shanks boarded the Mobydick with his Conqueror's Haki activated; however, some people lost consciousness due to not having the will to remain conscious in his presence; the others however, apparently were strong-willed enough to remain conscious. As straight-forward as this anecdote may appear to be, there's more to it which has gone unnoticed.

Before Arriving

Before Shanks steped onboard the Mobydick, Marco and Jozu warned all the newcomers to stay back⁽¹⁾, but some being too curious or strongheaded, refused to take heed; some of the newcomers even questioned Marco's authority⁽²⁾.

One would have to assume that there'd be consequences for being disobidient, just like when one is told not to touch fire, and out of ignorance, decide to touch fire and as a result, end up getting burnt; we can surely expect these newcomers to get burnt.

His Arrival

Shanks has arrived, it's therefore, too late to stand within the outside of the unprotected zone⁽³⁾. As Shanks confidently makes his way though the enemy ship to meet Whitebeard, a wake of newcomers are falling by him, due to his overwhelming Conqueror's Haki⁽⁴⁾.

What If...

What if these arrogant newcomers had stayed back as Marco had said? Marco is no fool, he's a veteran, the newcomers were either foolish or too slow to take heed to his warnings. If they had moved to the back like Marco and Jozu warned them to, they'd still be conscious. Or else, for what purpose did Marco tell them to stay back?

Newcomers

We know the newcomers in Shank's path were knocked out, however, there are other newcomers too. The other newcomers are the people all looking shocked, asking questions and the people that Marco is reassuring to remain calm⁽⁵⁾.

Marco is not talking to Jozu or the other veterans to not panic, because they're all familiar with Conqueror's haki, unlike newcomers. Therefore, there are newcomers scattered all over the ship, not just the ones who were knocked out. Many of them are standing in the area that Marco told them all to stand, which is why they're not knocked out⁽⁶⁾.

If those guys are newcomers, then it questions, why aren't they knocked out? It's because they're in the safe area as pointed out.

Where Are...

Marco and Jozu? Initially, we see Marco and Jozu at the bottom of the stair⁽⁷⁾. It's important to take note that these stairs are by the Picket Fence, so we know Marco and Jozu are by the Whitebeard or the Safe Zone, the entire time, along with the obedient Newcomers.

As Shanks draws ever closer to the ship, they edge back further away from the bottom of the stairs closer to the Picket Fence or Railings⁽⁸⁾. Also, take note, there are no Picket Fences near the entrance, it's an open space which is why some Newcomers can be seen at the far ends of the of the Mobydick's Width/Breadth⁽*⁾.

This means that Marco and Jozu, just like the Newcomers that stood in the Picket Area weren't affected by Shanks's Haki, because they weren't in the CoC Zone in the first place, unlike the Newcomers who lingered in the CoC Zone.

How Far was Shank's Haki Spread?

If Shank's Haki was spread throughout the entire ship, there would be no newcomers for Marco to tell to keep calm because, every new comer should have lost consciousness if that were the case, this means it was only active or restricted to a certain area which was the path he planned to walk to get to Whitebeard.

And if one remembers, Shanks said he didn't come to start a war, he was just ensuring his own safety being on an enemy ship and simply have a discussion with Whitebeard⁽⁹⁾.

Conqueror's Haki can't be Resisted

There's a reason why Pirate King will be a fight between Conqueror Haki users⁽¹⁰⁾, it's because only another Conqueror Haki user can resist the effects of intimidation.

This is why when Luffy used Conqueror's Haki at Marineford:

  • Sengoku's face expressed sheer intimidation, and we know Luffy's Haki reached Sengoku, because Mr. Galdino (Mr.2) was in the executioner's uniform standing by Sengoku, and lost consciousness.
  • Aokiji exclaimed is this Magic?
  • Akainu became heavily motivated to kill Luffy.
  • and Doberman made Luffy a priority, because he'd become a very formidable opponent in future, if he learnt to control his Conqueror's Haki.
The only way for Conqueror Haki to be resisted is be resisting it with your own Conqueror's haki; a Conqueror's Haki clash in otherwords. It's because not everyone can oppose Conqueror's Haki, that it's regarded as fearsome power to be wary of.

Conclusion

The point of this is to show that, the reason Marco and Jozu weren't fazed by Shanks's Conqueror's Haki is because Shanks only restricted his Haki to within a certain area of the ship. The area Marco and Jozu, along with the other newcomers stood, was out of harm's way, or they'd have either fainted or been intimidated; being that neither happened, it's safe Shanks's Haki most definitely wasn't extended to reach that far.

Thanks for Reading

I kinda like this theory but I have no idea when we are going to get any definitive proof to it.

About the expressions of characters when someone is using Haoshoku Haki: I think that you can't actually be sure that the strong people are affected by it; the expression could just be that they are surprised about what happened or something like that. For example I thought it was like that when Luffy used Conqueror's Haki in Marineford; everyone was just surprised. Even the case where you said that Akainu was affected by Shanks' Haki you could say that he was just surprised that Shanks was there.

Agreed that expressions can't solely be used, but we see that Coby lost consciousness only after Shanks arrived, and not because of the incoming punch which he was prepared and resolved to take. Shanks knocked him out out of mercy, so, I don't think it's too farfetched to say that Shanks's CoC had a role to play, with that expression and along with surprise.

In regards to prove, I personally see it as all there just by reading what Rayleigh said, and then looking at all CoC scenarios with that context in mind.

I would still be skeptical on the extent to which conqueror's haki would be effective on strong people. If the ability was so absurdly powerful as suggested and it could work to an extent on people who don't have it regardless of their power then luffy would be basically guaranteed to win against non conqueror haki users. However we have seen that conqueror's haki can be resisted by people much weaker than yourself. Take the lesser strawhats, all of them felt rayleigh's conqueror's haki but in turn did not seem affected by it. With that in mind could we expect that luffy's conqueror's haki would be effective on, say, sanji? I think conqueror's haki could provide some advantages in battle against strong people but I do think it will be mostly marginal. Conqueror's haki has not been shown as something that makes people strong or increases their will. It's the opposite, conqueror's haki is a reflection of a person's strength of character. People who have conqueror's haki are those whose wills are most exceptional. Conqueror's haki isn't a cause, it's a result. The people who will duke it out for the title of pirate king are conqueror haki users but not because conqueror haki is awesome but rather because conqueror haki users are people who are predisposed for such a thing. In that regard conqueror haki is more like a medal than anything else.

You have provided no proof, that it's not awesome. Why else did Rayleigh say not to use it without training it first?

Why is Pirate King whomever has the strongest of Conqueror's Haki?

Why didn't Chinjao say, whoever has the strongest Armament and Observation Haki, but Conqueror's?

Why is it that whenever a CoC uses CoC against another user, they MUST clash if it's not a power?

Rayleigh already said it, it's the power to intimidate, so why would a power that only 1 in a million possess wouldn't be powerful is absurd.

Heck, we saw how everyone reacted when Luffy used CoC in Marineford, it wasn't until then that Akainu decided that Luffy was a great threat.

it wasn't even until then that Whitebeard decided that his entire fleet should support him.

People either undermine CoC, or expect it to do something more, and that's because they just don't understand it, despite all the evidence we've been given in 800+ chapters.

It did affect everyone, they all got startled.

Jozu said, without strong will, no one can hold up their consciousness against CoC; Rayleigh said CoC intimidates; Jozu didn't say that staying conscious doesn't mean they don't get intimidated, it's even more logical to feel intimidated when conscious, not unconscious.

So, yes Sanji, Akainu, anyone, would feel intimidated against CoC, or it wouldn't be a power that's to be feared.

Well, there is no evidence of the conqueror's haki really doing all that much in battle. There are instances of it clashing but the manga has not elaborated on what that implies. Take the time luffy fought hodi. Hodi didn't even have haki and luffy fought with all his strength against him. Was there any allusion to conqueror's haki impairing hodi somehow? The same goes for ceasar as well.

I am not saying there aren't clashes of conqueror's haki or that conqueror's haki isn't a tangible thing in the manga.

I did point out they felt conqueror's haki. But in the end it didn't knock them out or otherwise negatively affect them. Also, when have we seen anyone strong being intimidated by conqueror's haki? Imagine if sanji and luffy fight... Is sanji supposed to be intimidated assuming he does not have conqueror's haki? Or take law vs doflamingo. Did we ever see anything regarding law being pressured or affected by doflamingo's conqueror haki? I guess law could have it as well but the manga never alluded to that...Can you imagine people of real power being just scared of their enemies at this stage in the manga? I just don't see how that can happen... Odds are that if someone who doesn't have conqueror's haki faces someone powerful with conqueror's haki he will be about as phased as ussop or nami were when they felt Rayleigh's. We have remarkably little context to make assumptions regarding what the actual effect is.

My point is, it's the haki itself which makes conqueror haki relevant. It's what it implies. Conqueror's haki is a manifestation of will power. People with conqueror's haki will have unbreakable wills and the capacity to pull through any situation. So I maintain that the relevance of conqueror's haki is still that it is objective prove that the person who has is has unbreakable willpower, the predisposition to push through towards his ambition under any circumstances. The person with the strongest conqueror's haki is simply the one with the greatest willpower of all.

There is, we see him briefly intimidated whilst it's activated.

And we saw Luffy use it to take out 50,000 people, perhaps, that impaired his ability to keep on using it.

I did point out they felt conqueror's haki. But in the end it didn't knock them out or otherwise negatively affect them.
This is absolutely wrong:
  • The Gorgon sisters weren't knocked out, but they got intimidated and explicitly made mention of it.
  • Sandersonia right after the scene above goes on to say, if he can't control that Haki, then it's useless despite not being knocked out which means, even if he had it activated without losing consciousness, they'd have been fighting whilst being intimidated, or even ceased to be able to fight momentarily for all we know.
  • Shanks used it on the Sea-King, it didn't get knocked out, but it got intimidated and ran away.
If what Zoro did with intimidation is not at least indicative of how influential intimidation can be in battle, I really don't know how much more Oda needs to explain it, even though he's already written "intimidation" in black & white.
Or take law vs doflamingo. Did we ever see anything regarding law being pressured or affected by doflamingo's conqueror haki? I
Taken out of context, Luffy and Joker were using it on each other, not on Law.

Conqueror's haki is a manifestation of will power.
Again, wrong, you're making up your own ambiguous definitions.

I just don't see how that can happen... Odds are that if someone who doesn't have conqueror's haki faces someone powerful with conqueror's haki he will be about as phased as ussop or nami were when they felt Rayleigh's. We have remarkably little context to make assumptions regarding what the actual effect is.
It's more like ignoring what's explicitly been said and shown.

Even Robin made the distinction, that Luffy using Conqueror's Haki scared Motobaro into unconsciousness, and "Wow" would obviously be intimidation.

If you're going to talk about context, you completely disregarded and ignored the context in these:
  • Gorgon sisters.
  • Shanks against the Sea King.
  • Rayleigh's explanation.
  • Marineford reactions
You provide no evidence or even string up any actual quotes to support your claims because they're pretty much baseless. Whereas, the fact that it intimidates is explicitly stated and illustrated in panels.

The claim that someone without Conqueror's Haki would simply disregard it makes the whole point of clashing pointless. So, that simply can't be the case.

It makes no sense to possess a power that'd have no impact despite how much importance has been put over it.

There is no reason to think luffy's ability to use his haki was impaired after taking out the 50000 fishmen. If anything luffy usually seems to fight fully exerting his conqueror's haki. I doubt there is a reason for us to think he didn't use it against ceasar, hodi or anyone else he has faced at this point.

There is only one translation where rayleigh uses the word intimidate to describe conqueror's haki. However in the mangapanda, cnet and wikia it's always willpower.

At the very least cnet is more reliable than MS... I think it is enough to ignore the specific translation of what rayleigh said you reference.

Anyways, as far as the intimidation, I think you are interpreting the whole thing wrong. You are right, luffy has intimidated people with his haki. But why would we assume that is its actual and specific purpose? I would argue that those guys have been intimidated because they felt luffy's power, not because haki just arbitrarily does that. You have the case of the sea king and the boa sisters... both of whom were feeling power overwhelmingly greater than their own. And as far as marineford reactions, those align with what I am saying. Didn't the display of haki specifically make one of the admirals wary of what luffy might become in the future as well?

You're implying and disregarding the fact that overpower one's will couldn't mean intimidate.

Your entire argument is semantics.

Even speaking logically, will power can be diminished if one is intimidated or scared for some reason.

A person decides and is confident to enter a scary looking building, on getting there, they're intimidated and thus, lose the will power or determinatoin to follow through.

What does it mean to overpower one's will? It's not just an ambiguous mystical phrase, it has a definition.

Regardless of how much semantics you want to play here.

Gorgon sisters, why did they say there's nothing to fear? right after Luffy used Conqueror's momentarily if CoC isn't the power to intimidate? Even the Viz Translation says the same thing.

It's like saying if CoC was claimed to be the power to project intense heat without flames, and someone said they felt hot when CoC was released, what you're literally doing is saying it can't be heat, even though the phrasing is consistent with the action.

How is it that you built an entire theory literally around the word "intimidate" but I am the one arguing semantics when I point out the translation you reference is inaccurate? Your entire theory was built around semantics to begin with.

The sisters said there is nothing to fear because luffy couldn't use the overwhelming power they felt from him.

COC can intimidate but that is because as far as the ones feeling it are concerned they are feeling overwhelming power, overwhelming willpower. They understand the implications of luffy's enormous haki. Imagine straight up running into a lion. Would you be scared? If you are, is it because lions have the magical ability to be scary to others or is it because holy shit there is a lion in front of you? Would absolute everyone be scared of the lion? It's more or less the same situation with luffy. People react to the literally overwhelming haki luffy releases.
