Looks like Super is finally ending and hopefully the new Dragon Ball will have a better name than "super" I'm really praying the manga will move past ToP so we can get a clue of the coming arcs after the hiatus

Dragon Ball Super is like a parody of the end of Dragon Ball, which in itself was a parody of the earlier manga. What once was a manga with an actual story became essentially fan fiction, and I can't believe people still read/watch. I mean every chapter has a freaking powerup now! I guess there is money to be made, so on it shall go, but I miss the old days where it was actually about something other than "omg can they get stronger again?"

I am not sure the manga was at any point like that lol. Powerups were arbitrary since day one. What changed over time was that it left its comedic elements and transitioned into a proper action oriented shonen. That said, I loath how the anime handles powerups. I was a huge fan of the more recent DB movies (battle of gods and return of f). I bought into the SSG, then goku and vegeta growing stronger due to having god ki and then even SSB. My only issue with SS was the color. What a wasted chance to make a super saiyan red (distinct from SSG). And then DBS anime went on what seems like a cocaine induced rampage and simply fucking nothing made sense. Suddenly goku and vegeta started using any arbitrary transformation they could at any time and it became impossible to even know how strong they were or how strong their enemies were. FFS at one point krillin faced SSB. Krillin being able to do anything whatsoever against SSB is contrary to how 10 years worth of strength differences worked in DB. And then you get to the TOP... Where ultra instinct is a transformation for some reason, gohan decides to come up with his own way to grow stronger and is apparently within the same realm of strength as blue and arbitrarily decides to not use SS even though the point had been made in DB that gohan could actually go SS on top of mystic. And then the insult of SSBKKx20... And vegeta getting SSB form which gives him fucking shojo eyes. So what you have is saiyans being able to completely customize their transformations to suit their tastes. Wtf is that? That said, that is for the anime, the dbs manga is far more coherent in regards to this things in general and barring a few moments is mostly enjoyable.

Anime of Super is kool & enjoyable but very, very cringe worthy at times. I feel like i'm watching DBZ with lots of filler mixed in with somebodies head canon, before the internet blew up & Episodes past the Freiza saga & Cell games where on re-runs for what seemed like an eternity in America; with fans running with whatever info they hurd as fact. As for power scaling, inconsistencies is majorly due to Animators animating the storyline from Toriyama's & Toyatoro's notes on the plot & direction of the story; Instead of them animating & adapting an already finished manga chapter or manga arcs. But i'm happy we received what we have so far from such a OG franchise & modern Gateway series in the west into anime/manga

I hate the episode with Gohan's hair going from golden yellow to Black its retarded...When Gohan had is potential unlocked, The kai told him he can access this power the same way he goes SS...& that going SS used up stamina. So mystic was never a transformation or form. It was a power up & boost to where Gohan no longer needed to go SS to use his FP, meaning its dumb for him to be a SS, & go oh I can power up to where my hair returns its original color and i'll be stronger than I was as a blonde/SS....Portara retcon was wack, but I guess they needed a way to have characters separate again...But the whole SSB Vegito can't even go FP without defusing dulls the portara fusion & basically nerf's the character ongoing in a Franchise like DBZ where the main characters reach new heights of powers every other arc...Trunks power-up was thrash, fun to watch but made little sense & never go explained lol. Zamasu merging with the universe thrash. & Power Scaling needs not be talked about everybody agrees that SSB should never be challenged by Krillin, #17, Gohan, Kale etc..

The manga does the DBZ franchise more justice with a lot less to critic negatively. Aside from not writing a ROF which would have been very good because True Form Freiza vs Base Goku is a wonderful fight but later shows the power scaling inconsistency of Base Goku who no longer shows the lv of power when he went toe to toe & was winning against someone who is shown to be much stronger than a SS2. Then there's base Goku Black who was owning a SS2 Trunks who was almost = ss3Goku; Trunks mentions he haven't seen GB go SS in a while, we later see SS Goku Black get a Zenkai & start to hurt a SSB Vegeta, ties with him after another zenkai then proceeds to Rose mode..Aside from all that the manga is awesome to me.

Not really. Go back to the start. Goku trains hard with Krillin and Roshi before the first tournament, does work the hard way, he and Krillin power up. Later, Goku gets his ass kicked by the Pai Pai (i think that's the assassins name). He gets a power up mostly by climbing up a very tall tower, actual physical training. And his power up was in service of the story - hunting Dragon Balls, in this case to bring back his friends dead father. Over and over the power ups were from training and really just made him faster/stronger, while he and his friends were on adventures, with the occasional tournament.

Now, they are getting 3 powerups within the same tournament! No training, just "oh, i bet I can do this thing now". Why? Why not! The story is just "hey, battle!" Really, it's obvious that this was a cash grab. There was no story reason to bring it back, that's been made plenty obvious.

That is half true IMO. Goku did train as you say but he was also taking advantage of his saiyan physiology through all of it. Even in his childhood he took advantage of the getting stronger after every fight the saiyans have going for them and on top of that he did also get stronger from recovering from life threatening wounds. Granted training was more emphasized back then however it doesn't change that goku grew arbitrarily stronger as the plot demanded it.

Dragonball was pretty much the archetype for both adventure/ exploration shonen (first part) and the ott slugfests with multi-form villains and boatloads of power-ups (the part called Z in the anime). What it always had though, was a reasonably decent and interesting story behind it and that’s what I’ve missed with Super - it’s basically a series of brawls loosely strung together with as minimal storyline as they can get away with, and when ‘power levels’ and particularly reaching new heights become as meaningless as they already were post Frieza, that gets boring very quickly. Honestly GT, for all it’s flaws was actually probably along the right lines with trying to eschew what the final parts of the manga had turned into, but it was too handicapped by Goku et al already being massively OP for the purposes of just adventuring. Really it’d have to focus on Trunks and Goten exploring, but again, that’s limited by the fact that unlike Goku, they have their comfortable home lives and families...

Dragon Ball's story has always been simple. I'd say that the story is actually more complex in DBS, but it's nothing outstanding. GT had some good moments but overall it was terrible. Toriyama isn't trying to write the story as before.

Simple? Yeah but effective. Complex doesn’t mean better, just more convoluted to mask its very simple goal - to provide a backdrop to the fights. I know I’m just echoing what has been said a million times before here, but Goku isn’t even Goku in Super. He’s a character that looks the same and takes on his role, but he’s a shallow parody of the character that existed in his original form. Like a more 2d parody of Luffy (who is himself a more 2d parody of the real Goku). I disagree, execution wise GT was beyond terrible. ;) But conceptually it was generally along the right lines. No, and honestly I don’t think you could get back to the same level with a tapped out universe like this one. It had its time a long time ago now, and while for so long I wanted it to come back, the reality is living proof of what people say about ending on a high.

Eh, that sayian stuff was a retcon later on, i don't think reading the story, or watching the anime from the start gives that impression. Certainly not so that it makes it feel like the entire point of the story was constant powerups.

Now it's "SS1...SS2...SS3...SSGod, SSblue....etc"

Each powerup seems important to one, and only one, story arc, and you wonder what the point of any of it was. If the manga/anime was more grounded in a story, not the fan fiction battle fest it's turned into, these powerups may have some meaning and be cool.

Similar problem I had with Naruto. Started so good, natural strength progression. But by the end, it was powerup after powerup, making all the hard work moot. Some ghost is just gonna ram power into you so that you don't even need all the cool stuff you spent all that time learning.

I said it's more complex but not that it made it better. In the end it's still very simple, I don't see how things are convoluted. Goku isn't exactly written like in Z, but he is still essentially the same at least to me(easygoing, confidence often bordering on arrogance, love to fight, train and eat etc). As I said above, it isn't Z anymore, Goku wasn't exactly like in Z in GT either.

I honestly don't see how GT was better than DBS conceptually. But in the end it's the execution which really matters.

To me the character rot actually set in in Z - I would suppose following on from Toriyama’s well documented decline in interest post Frieza. Goku wasn’t meant to be a dumbass, it was naivite from having literally grown up completely isolated from anyone but Gohan until he was 12. Yes he’s also a very straightforward character, but I really don’t think stupid was what Toriyama was trying to portray to begin with (and later in the story it started to get that way only because it was an easier characterisation to maintain some of what made earlier Goku endearing).

To me it’s better conceptually because they attempted to actually do something with re-establishing a story driven story (an attempt which ultimately failed as, like I said, the potential of the verse had been pretty much tapped at that point). Super, by contrast, just embraces the ridiculous power inflation and throwing new enemies at Goku so he can beat them. It’s funny, the entire series is essentially a Goku wank, but it only actually bothers me after he comes back from fighting Frieza... I don’t know if there’s a subtle shift in his personality that makes him seem more arrogant, but I just find it harder to actually get behind his successes after that point in the story. It’s very similar to Natsu in Fairy Tail, only with Natsu it’s very obviously because he becomes increasingly pompous after both of the timeskips.

I'd say it's fake complexity. I mean, multiverse with a hierarchy of gods sounds complex, but when it's entire purpose is...a tournament, you realize they aren't trying to use the cool ideas for a story, just an excuse for fights.

I like the new character design/ art style for the movie this year, I was never particularly a fan of the ‘shiny’ look!

A pretty good chapter. The faster pace does wonders over the anime. But will it more or less have the same conclusion? Well, the last episode was pretty impressive...

Yes, the conclusion should not be very different.

If it doesn't end differently, then Goku will have a bit of character development realizing he simply is not defeating Jiren alone and accepts Freiza and 17's assistance. Those scenes were amazing, frankly. Best part of the whole anime. And I like how things are progressing differently in the manga.

I just hope someone reshapes the battlefield around next chapter. The current one is no good for individual fights. For a desperate, confused Melee, sure, but this isn't Smash Bros. The fighters simply aren't going to use real team tactics at once to make it interesting, like with the Gods of Destruction brawl just before this.

  • 18 and Piccolo eliminated.
  • Ribrianne and her friends eliminated.
  • 17 still on a rampage.
Average chapter. RIbrianne's interactions with 18 were funny.
