Are we seriously trying to find any sense in this manga? When a new author makes all the main characters completely retarded, and makes someone left behind light years ago such as Roshi keep up with the new strongest dudes, what can we expect? :fail

I don't mind it too much but I would have preferred Tien gaining relevance.

Chapter 40 spoilers.

Most of the chapter is Goku vs Jiren
Freeza intervenes at first to give Goku some time to recover, until he gets pushed out of the way by Jiren
Goku quickly goes back to Blue and tries to ambush Jiren while Freeza assists him
Jiren realizes their strategy and almost eliminates Freeza, but Android 17 saves him.
Vegeta vs Toppo continues, Toppo is tired, but he's smiling
Much to everyone's surprise, Toppo shots a blast at a tired Dyspo, eliminating him in the process.
This way, Toppo has thrown away his "Justice" beliefs, he becomes stronger, his appearance changing too. "Come, Saiyan." He says, as he proceeds brutally assaulting Vegeta
Chapter ends with Vegeta exclaiming: "For Cabba, Bra, Trunks and especially my wife, Bulma, I will win this fight!"

My bad, you are right. Official translations are out on Viz at least.

Indeed, I still enjoy MS' scans more (they tend to convey the story better for some reason).

I don't mind it too much but I would have preferred Tien gaining relevance.
It makes ZERO, absolutely ZERO sense that Roshi could have surpassed Tien. Roshi lost his relevance as soon as Goku became an adult. Tien on the other hand was relevant till the last arc, where he bravely put himself against Majin Buu and even managed to distract him for a second. With his Kikuho, he could even stall second form Cell for an extended period of time.

Why did they even include Roshi in their cast for the tournament? Even if they say Goten and Trunks can't participate because they are kids, there would still have been Yamcha, Chiaozu and Yajirobe, three characters that were vastly stronger than Roshi in the original manga, even though they lost their relevance there as well. Or the most rational thought would have been to not pick any normal humans for the tournament except for Kuririn and Tien, but instead to fill the final slot with Namekian Warriors.

I really liked the original premise of Super, that Vegeta would catch up with Goku again, and that Goku began to lose his humanity due to becoming a "God". But oh man, did Toyotaru drive this into a corner.

I've given up on trying to explain power scaling, because you can't. This is normal shonen crap where there is no consistency. There are few exceptions to this rule, One Piece being one of them.

Actually Toryama's Dragon Ball was incredibly consistent when it comes to powerlevels. Every Single Story Arc, one can rank the characters exactly. Yes, power-ups came at random. Still there is a consistency. After everyone surpassed Roshi, Roshi dropped out. During the entire series, Roshi never again surpassed another character. This is also true for every other character. After Gohan surpassed Piccolo, Piccolo never became stronger that him again.

There are only three controversial questions regarding powerlevels, but one is actually kinda silly and comes from anime only people.

The three questions are:

1. How strong is Yajirobe after he trained to face Vegeta and Nappa? Is he stronger than Tien/Krillin/Yamcha/Chiaozu? Since he was once close to Kid Goku, there is evidence that he actually could have been the strongest human at that time. But he was too lazy and scared too actually participate in the battle. He still cut off that tail though. Since he quit fighting with the Z fighters afterwards, it doesn't matter anyways. Still he was definitely many times stronger than Roshi, who became irrelevant during Goku's Kid years.

2. Who is stronger, Ultimate Gohan or Vegeta after returning to Earth to face Buu? This is the only realy controversial question that is highly debatable.

3. Who is stronger EoS, Krillin or Tien? This is the silly question because Manga readers know it is Tien. Tien was relevant (combat-wise) against both Cell and Buu and he trains every day all his life. Krillin becomes a family father and let's his hair grow, visually showing that his days as a martial artist are over. He was last relevant against Freeza .

Ultimate gohan>Buu saga vegeta I don’t see how this is a highly debatable topic

Sayans get stronger when they die or get close to dead. It was a long time ago when I read Dragonball, but didn't Vegeta stall Kid Buu while Goku was gathering the Genkidama? Gohan lost to a former form of Buu, but he wasn't killed or knocked out, just absorbed. None of them achieved SSJ3. And there you go.

Kid buu was weaker than Super Buu who Gohan dominated. Vegeta was no where close. He only stalled kid buu because he was able to taunt him but was completely outmatched.

Toryama marks Kid Buu as Buu's strongest form in an interview, it is on the DB wiki with the source. The entire formula of Dragon Ball is that there is a completely linear progression in villain strenght.

Anyways, I wasn't even arguing for or against either Gohan or Vegeta, just pointing out controversial questions in an otherwise highly consistent system that definitely wouldn't have allowed Roshi to catch up with Tien.

The fact that two people immediately jump on it, even though this thread is for Super, not Z, just proves me right here. It is a controversial question.

The lack of arguments suggests an emotional reaction. A Vegeta fan would have written the same statement, just in reverse. There is no clear answer because there are arguments for and against both sides.

Just because you say it is linear doesn't mean it is.
