So if you claim August has low durability because he got pierced by the knife, doesn't that mean that God Serena has more durability than Gildarts? If a slash from Acnologia only ripped a hole through God Serena but it ripped off half of Gildarts' limbs then wouldn't you say that Gildarts is less durable than God Serena?

Yeah, and guess who died?

It sure wasn't Gildartz.

Now let me turn the question back. Who is more durable?

The guy who had half his limbs ripped off but managed to stay alive or the guy who died by a single hole?

I think it's pretty obvious. Whoever manages to live is the overall victor in durability. God Serena died... he didn't just get defeated...

Life/Death >>> Damage when it comes to determining durability.

Wrong. Not gonna bother debating about Ice Trail, but that scene you provided was filler. While Zentopia was mentioned once in the manga by Yukino, there's no guarantee that every scene in Zentopia was cannon because filler scenes happen in cannon arcs all the time. Provide a link where Hiro acknowledges that everything that went down in Zentopia in the anime is cannon and I'll believe that your scene isn't filler.

What does this have to do with the Zentopia arc scene being filler or not?

You said Natsu could throw multiple mountain busting punches. You're only make yourself look bad here.

Yea I completely agree with you. That was actually the point of my comment. I was trying to show that physical damage taken doesn't nessecarily correlate to durability. August may have been pierced with a knife but despite it going straight through his heart he shook it off like it was nothing and proceeded to nuke the living hell out of Natsu and co.

It still went through him. Natsu been blasting concrete walls with a single punch.

If I threw that knife that Brandish used at the wall it would bounce or stick to it. Now use Natsus dragon fist, it would break the wall.

Iron fist>Knife

You're a hypocrite, you completely ignore all the shit I posted and still say "God Serena is stronger" bye.
What?! I never said anything of the sort. I said that God Serena was what Gildarts was calling formidable when he was alive. How does that make me a hypocrite?

Can't tell if you're actually being serious here or not. Mind showing where I made that statement?

Not a one liner btw.

Here's my top 10 non FT guild members on Ishgar's side when it comes to power:

1. Jellal
2. Hyberion
3. Wolfheim
4. Minerva
5. Kagura
6. Jura
7. Sting/Rouge (tied)
8. Midnight
9. Cobra
10. Hoteye

Since this war has literally just been FT guild vs Alvarez a lot of the people on this list don't have much feats and I'm probably wrong about where to rank them.

Gildarts lost his arm, leg, and his belly. God Serena only had his belly taken from him. Who had it worst? Gildarts did and Acnologia was in dragon form. And don't use that target as an excuse that he's stronger than Gildarts. Acnologia hates humans, he thinks of them nothing more than insects. He didn't get a rip about August and Jacob.

The fact that August had a knife pierce him means he has low durability. And Natsu was able to negate the spell, probably not for Lucy and Happy but he did for himself.

Natsu was bathing in Atlas

uh, no. Sayings someone is strong doesn't mean they're equal.

Gildarts has casual mountain busting punches. He threw 13 punches instantly and can move at "poof!" Speed. did you really just ignore the fact that Gildarts blitz the fuck out of bluenote with Empyrean?!
--- Double Post Merged, , Original Post Date: ---

Irene pushed him back like 2 feet and teleported him. If Acnologia really wanted to, he could've killed her the same way God Serena did. Acnologia wasn't even moving. Not a worthy feat to say she's stronger than Gildarts.
how does a knife piercing him mean he has low durability? The fact that he proceeded to unleash a large, powerful attack seem to prove you wrong. If anything, he can be vulnerable, but a high durability he does have. though, so does Gidarts.

But Acnologia did not, and I doubt it'd have worked as Irene would have been prepared.

Worthy enough that Acnologia gave her respect as opposed to seeing Gildarts as an ant. While God Serena may be extremely powerful, it's a widely accepted opinion among the characters that Irene and August are superior, and Gildarts himself admitted he's close to Serena's power. One shouldn't go by this 100%, but it does say something.

I gave a very similar argument not too long ago, she ignored it of course...
I just don't see how people can make such a whacked assumption that Gildarts is stronger than August and Irene. I mean, within the verse itself they're hailed as two of the strongest wizards ever, and they haven't actually gotten much action time yet. Using feats to scale power comparing one character against another is just stupid.
One might as well say Gildarts is stronger than Zeref if he's "the second most powerful character"....

It's also about matchups. Zeref could be stronger than Irene, but Irene's intelligence and knowledge of her powers could allow her to beat Zeref regardless. So far, August has been stabbed but doesn't show any sign that he was, and Irene was recognized and praised (?) by Acnologia and managed to send him far away, whereas Acnologia stomped Gildarts out of boredom.

Yes it's a matter of regard. Acnologia clearly felt that Irene was worthy enough to talk to, in his human form no less, while he swatted Gildarts away like a fly. I see Gildarts as being Hiro's fallback character for Fast Forward plot development. If he wants to get something done quickly he brings in Gildarts. "Oh the rules of logic don't apply to him, so he can one shot this guy and we'll all move on".

I can agree with you to say that August is powerful. I'm not saying his durability is shit either.

And by the way, this comment isn't necessarily directed at you.

But at the same time, there is nothing that disproves Gildartz being on or around the same tier as August and Irene.

After all, there is reasonable evidence to assume that Gildartz is at least Irene's level, and maybe even August himself.

____________________________________________________________

@Everyone else

I've read all of the posts recently, but haven't decided to reply to anyone in particular. This isn't directed towards only one person.

However, let me go over a few things that were said above:

1.)
For those that say Irene has more AoE than Gildartz:

While it's true that Universe One spans a large surface area, you can't deny that it does absolutely no damage. Irene being able to move Acnologia from one place to another isn't an impressive feat and cannot be compared to Gildartz.

While Gildartz's attacks spans a smaller radius, he actually does damage (and major destruction too).

What Irene did was pretty much useless. The only things she gained from Universe One was pissing off Acnologia.

In a real 1-on-1 battle, that does no good, it just prolongs the fight. At this point, Acnologia can just fly to Irene and oneshot her.

In conclusion, to say who has more AoE: Gildartz or Irene?

Technically, it'd be Gildartz because he actually does damage whereas Irene is simply just displacement.

Literally speaking, it'd be Irene, but you have to remember that AoE is useless if it does no damage.

Which is more useful?

Wahl's skinny barrage of bullets or Invel's large blizzard?

I think you guys get my point here.

2.) I'm not going to lie here... but all this talk about "mountain busting feats, town level feats, city level feats, etc." is starting to get really annoying.

This has been said over and over again, and I've seen some people argue against this faulted logic.

I don't know how many times I've stressed this, but those calculations are completely meaningless to me.

I'd rather use hype and portrayal to measure a character's strength/power than those calculations.

Long story short, there is no way of measuring damage and megatonnes through your computer screen's pixels and a real life photograph of a mountain.

I've analyzed the calculations before:

It is borderline absurd in my opinion to guess the height, width, and dimensions of a drawn panel and calculate the energy and explosiveness of an attack.

Not only is there a lot of guesswork involve, but the "original creators of those calculations" don't even have any concept about the way TNT works and the units they are using.

Their conversions are sloppy in my opinion and they have no credible foundation to the basis of their conversions and calculations.

If you want to measure Gildartz and August's feats through these calculations, then by all means, go ahead.

But I'll let you know right now that none of that will convince me.

3.) What happened to all of you guys that argued by "feats only"?

Literally, no more than a few months ago, a lot of you were participating in the debates of the Fairy Tail Tournament.

When you guys argued, all of you guys were so obsessed with using "feats only" to judge the strength/power of a character.

Right now, you guys are going against that.

The person with the better feats at the moment is Gildartz, no question about it.

Up to this point, August is as strong as he is based off of portrayal and hype.

Nothing more, nothing less.

Gray and Gildartz were eliminated extremely quickly in the tournament because they had no feats to back them up at the time.

The way it works when it comes to powerscaling is this:

The character with the better feats is the stronger/more powerful character until proven otherwise.

You guys are the ones that set this rule, not me.

Therefore since Gildartz has the better feats compared to August, he will be the superior one until August shows more feats for us to judge.

It's as simple as that.

If you guys want to say Gildartz is on par with August, that's understandable.

But saying that August is superior to Gildartz by miles is complete bullshit, especially when August currently lacks feats and has shown almost nothing for us to powerscale him.

Up to this point, the Spriggans have turned out to be a major disappointment.

The way Invel and Brandish performed was nowhere near to what we all expected from them.

So it's risky and pointless to assume so much from August when the dude has barely shown what he is capable of.

Well said. It clearly states your standing on the matter :gent
  • I agree that Power shouldn't be measured by feats. It's dumb
  • I agree that there's no real way to even judge Augusts ability yet
  • I disagree that Gildarts can be easily compared to characters we know very little about aside from Irene who has probably pulled off the most impressive spell in the series as of yet
  • I wholeheartedly agree that it's innapropriate to judge the scale and proportion of an attack or effect that's been drawn on a 2d piece of paper... That's not to say that the anime should be more believable than the manga though

Ok I'm sorry but I just can't agree with this. If a lack of feats is what is keeping you from putting August above Gildarts then how can you put him below? He doesn't have any feats that put him above Gildarts, sure, but he doesn't have any to put him below either. The impressiveness of Gildarts' feats mean absolutely nothing in this context because we have nothing to compare them to. If you put August below Gildarts because he hasn't shown any superior feats, I can just as easily put August above him because he hasn't shown any inferior feats. The rule has to work both ways.

Invel's performance was to be expected. The only hype he got was based off of pure speculation from the fandom and the only reason people hyped him up was because he was close to Zeref. He hasn't gotten any hype from any characters in the manga at all. As for Brandish, we haven't seen her go all out a single time yet, and based off of Dimaria's description of her abilities Brandish is actually looking extremely powerful right now.

Gildarts wasn't eliminated quickly in the tournament at all, in fact if I remember correctly he made it to the semifinals. Gray did get knocked out quickly but he was missing something that August does in fact have, which is actual hype. There's a difference between speculative hype and manga-based hype. As of right now August is the only one out of these characters who has been hyped from multiple different characters in the manga itself, and as of right now there is absolutely nothing at all to suggest that that hype could be inaccurate.

You are misunderstanding the fundamentals of powerscaling (again, I didn't make this up, the fanbase insisted on this, so I'm being nice and following it):

The character with the better feats is the stronger/more powerful character until proven otherwise.

In other words, the character that has currently shown better feats is the superior one until the other character can show better feats.

Invel's performance was to be expected. The only hype he got was based off of pure speculation from the fandom and the only reason people hyped him up was because he was close to Zeref. We haven't seen Brandish go all out a single time yet, and based off of Dimaria's description of her abilities Brandish is actually looking extremely powerful right now.

By the overall fanbase, Invel's performance was unexpected. I watched closely that week.

Even if I disregard that, you can't deny the Spriggans have not lived up to the potential that they were portrayed to uphold.

And cmon, really dude, Brandish is not looking extremely powerful right now...

She is looking like she just got ran over by a car.

She even admitted her magic doesn't work on Enchanted Neinhart tier and above.

Natsu oneshotted that Enchanted Neinhart in base form.

Gildartz was eliminated way quicker than he should have been.

Recently, there is a general consensus that Gildartz is stronger than Jellal and Laxus based on feats.

That wasn't the case in the tournament.

Gildartz should have been the overall victor, not Natsu.

No proof.
Gildarts said he would be strong if he were alive. That doesn't auto automatically mean he's as strong as him. I've already have evidence that Gildarts is stronger than Seren.

August had a knife go through him. Gray pounding Invel with Ice Gauntlets but you didn't see Gray piercing his skin or blowing holes in him. Simply because Invel has a higher durability and August does not.

He may have a lot of magical power but that doesn't excuse the fact that he's weak. Acnologia didn't try against Irene, he launched one attack that could be seen easily.

You are misunderstanding the fundamentals of powerscaling (again, I didn't make this up, the fanbase insisted on this, so I'm being nice and following it):

The character with the better feats is the stronger/more powerful character until proven otherwise.
Yes this is true. But that doesn't apply to this case. For this rule to apply, you'd have to prove that Gildarts' feats are better than August's, but as of right now August essentially has no feats to compare Gildarts' to. So how can we just say that Gildarts has better feats?

In other words, the character that has currently shown better feats is the superior one until the other character can show better feats.

By the overall fanbase, Invel's performance was unexpected. I watched closely that week.

Even if I disregard that, you can't deny the Spriggans have not lived up to the potential that they were portrayed to uphold.
Invel's strength was hyped by the fanbase, sure, but the problem with that is that the hype the fanbase gave Invel had no basis in the manga at all, which is different than August's case. And while it is true that the majority of Spriggans so far haven't lived up to their portrayal, their hype was mainly given by Makarov, someone who had absolutely no idea of how much Fairy Tail improved over the year time skip. Again, August's case is different.

And cmon, really dude, Brandish is not looking extremely powerful right now...

She is looking like she just got ran over by a car.

She even admitted her magic doesn't work on Enchanted Neinhart tier and above.\

Natsu oneshotted that Enchanted Neinhart in base form.
Magic power doesn't necessarily correlate to durability.

Gildartz was eliminated way quicker than he should have been.

Recently, there is a general consensus that Gildartz is stronger than Jellal and Laxus based on feats.

That wasn't the case in the tournament.

Gildartz should have been the overall victor, not Natsu.
Natsu won precisely because of the rule you mentioned, because at that time he had shown better feats than Gildarts. I've already explained near the beginning of this post why this doesn't apply to August.

Probably just going to have to wait for Gildarts and August to have a fight (if we're lucky it'll be against each other). Right now the portrayal favours August by a fair bit. Gildarts is probably portrayed as someone who can beat God Serena high-diff, while August is portrayed as someone who is much above God Serena. My belief is Gildarts can give August a high diff fight. I am accounting for August and Irene to be over-hyped.

God Serena has more durability than pre-skip Gildarts. Acno ripped body parts off both of them - so their durability against Acnologia's level of power is irrelevant. The only difference is where they got hit. Serena's was lethal, Gildarts wasn't. Gildarts gets points for being able to survive - but that isn't durability.

If you want to compare durability - punches from Bluenote damaged Gildarts in a minor way. A punch from Wolfheim didn't hurt God Serena at all. So God Serena has the best durability feat of the 2.

Current Gildarts might have better durability than before, we'll wait and see. His preskip durability would still stand up in this arc anyway.

Gildartz has shown plenty of better feats compared to August.

He survived an encounter against Acnologia, his attacks have caused major destruction compared to August, his attacks have one of the largest AoE up to date, he has oneshotted Natsu in the past (who negated August's heat attack), he oneshotted Historia God Serena.

Gildartz is also known as Fairy Tail's Ace (the strongest allied guild in the war) and have taken on quests no other mage has.

He has plenty of feats and credibility on his shoulders.

August's best feats are:

Oneshotting a weakened out of power tied up base form Mirajane

Being stabbed by Brandish with blade

Natsu negating his heat based spell

Don't see how August's case is different.

Makarov hyped up August too didn't he?

We don't know how strong August really is at this point.

It's better not to assume because it is risky at the moment.

When August has shown some credible evidence, then we can powerscale him.

Magic power doesn't necessarily correlate to durability.

Brandish's Mass Manipulation Magic could not affect Enchanted Neinhart. That means her MP is lower.

Natsu was able to slice through Enchanted Neinhart's wind attack and oneshot him.
