BBC has a page that has R32 opponents updated as it stands

RIP to Turkey, incredible that a team with the players they have could be that inept

Indeed. They’ll get beaten by the US so no hope of being among the best third. Turkey used to be such a strong second-tier team, it’s sad.

They're already eliminated. They changed group tiebreakers to head-to-head first, goal differential second. So, because they've already lost to Paraguay and Australia, they have no tiebreaker advantage against whichever team loses in that match, even if they beat the USA in matchday 3.

And tbh I'm thankful for that, because I still have doubt in my heart regarding our performance against teams that are a bit more technical. We've proven we can pick a lock against low block teams, but not sure how we'd fare going blow for blow.

But really, this Turkey team has too much talent to be exiting already, somehow they are less than the sum of their parts.

Harsh on Ivory coast. Better team right up to the final whistle.
Also, Germany first knock out appearance since 2014 😱

Even with that showing, talent alone on that roster tells me they're at least a level above Qatar. Their manager is just a moron IMO. People seem to think he's better than just another Turkish manager but Montella has never accomplished anything of note in his managing career. I think he won the Supercoppa with Milan, but that's it... He insisted on playing a slower playmaker like Guler out wide against Australia, as well as a tiny false 9 in a cross-heavy strategy against a team with 3 giant centerbacks. They got punched in the mouth early against Paraguay and he had no ideas even against 10 men. Just terrible.

Cape Verde that is just beautiful, wow. They can actually qualify ahead of one of Spain/Uruguay.
Also, Belgium, really? Lol.

Egypt just broke the curse.

I think Egypt has great potential if they learned how to control long and still plays and tune their positioning. They also need to grow taller but nothing can be done about it lol

Good match though I got surprised by the amount of wasted goals in this one due to poor coordination from both teams actually. Egypt goal keeper was good too. Let’s see how far they can get.

Iran goal keeper carried hard. A team can suck hard but still appear good because of the goal keeper. They are the stars always in my eyes

Egypt game looked like a home game, they definitely showed up bigger than I would have expected. Though I think if they want to do something in knockouts Marmoush has to show up and actually do something.

Just came here to say: let's go Cape Verde! This country that no one thought would pass (except Brandish it seems) managed to tie Spain and Uruguay and only has the weakest team left to play. Hope they don't fumble now against Saudi Arabia.

Good Egypt game too. The African teams are slaying this time.

This tournament is setting so many records that previously were not beaten for decades. It seems it is going to be very interesting for the best goal scorer of this tournamnet and history in general. Haaland, Messi, Mbappe...

Haaland can compete for this tourney maybe but he's too old at 25 to catch up to Messi/Mbappe for all-time IMO

Yo @xi0 think you could add a poll to this thread regarding the Golden Boot?
I believe it’s the most fascinating thing in this world cup, maybe even more than the team winning the tournament.

Finally. Tournament starts now :amuse

First player to score in six world cups is a record that will just never be broken. Absolutely awesome longevity.

Probably makes sense to wait until after the last matchday for a better picture perhaps. Though I think Golden Ball is probably a more interesting discussion personally.

I enjoyed the therapy session he had on the sidelines after the first one :kappa

:hmmWon’t Golden Ball go for Messi though? The guy has already broken Miroslav Klose’s record, will score all or near enough of Argentina’s goals, and Argentina will likely go far in the tournament.
Even as a frenchie, even if France actually wins the Cup, I don’t see Mbappe getting Golden Ball. Could be wrong though.

Come now, be nice.

Final matchday starts today. Can't believe how open Group B is. Even Qatar have a somewhat slim chance of going through....

Would certainly be the betting favorite but kinda depends how far each team goes IMO. If Argentina have an early exit and someone like Mbappe or Haaland keeps scoring then I think you can argue they'd deserve it more. Messi's accomplishment is insane but if his team performs worse than others then the Golden Ball argument has to become weaker.

It's really only because Swiss didn't come to play against them
