Latest on the Balogun thing

Truncated 2 cents of mine - the only issue I have with it really is them waiting until the day before the match for this ruling. It should have been on the 3rd at the very latest, otherwise Belgium isn't owed anything. Them "lawyering up" and trying to get UEFA involved is hilarious to me, what are they going to do, boycott FIFA?

From what I've read from several sources, the crux of the issue at hand isn't whether it was wrong or not, it's the fact that VAR was used incorrectly and that resulted in a red card that couldn't be appealed. The video assistant referee showed the head referee slow-motion replay for judging "intensity" when that is something that slow-motion replay isn't supposed to be used for. If the referee had issued a red card on the field, then the appeal process would have been normal. Because it was given after VAR intervention (in which it wasn't properly used), it resulted in a red card that there was no apparent recourse for.



This is why "Article 27" was invoked. Personally, I think it's stupid and should just be changed to a yellow, but the actual ruling made by this committee doesn't really concern the ref's judgment. FIFA has no interest in admitting their officials are shit or that VAR is bad, they'd rather just blame it on procedure.

I think it makes sense that slow-motion and still images shouldn't be used to judge the intensity of an incident and you can see that by all of the people copy-pasting Balogun "standing" on Muharemovic's ankle and thinking that's the end of discussion. But if you watch it in real time can see that Muharemovic played through Balogun's back/side, and Balogun happened to step on him while moving along a normal path.

The optics are what they are though, you can thank the orange parasite for that. The administration is so desperate for good press that they have no issue throwing US Soccer under the bus in the process.

If it wasn't one of the big teams or America the host would the same thing be happening? No one should have that much faith in FIFA. But in my eyes this never deserved a suspension in the first place, so I don't think I can be more upset about FIFA reversing it than the original punishment itself.

The way they apply new technology is weird af. People want the "human element", but not too much, but also not too little. Just the right amount. We can use slow motion, 200 camera angles and ball sensors but lets kneecap it all in various convoluted ways. And still have no correct judgements in many games.

I'm not naive about our administration or FIFA, but hypothetically, if someone in USSF or our delegation knew the rules that FIFA didn't follow in regards to VAR and that is what these supposed phone calls are about, is that corruption?

Granted, the existence of Article 27 itself is dubious and you shouldn't need to ask FIFA as a governing body to follow their own fucking rules, but idk

Because Mexico's LW was absolutely ass but when they could coordinate a little bit through set pieces it was a different story.
