I see the main reason Skullion decided to retreat was seeing what Natsu and Erza did to Madmole and Kyria. Skullion really only made the comment about how Fairy Tail were actually strong after that. Up until that point, he considered FT to be pushovers. Natsu really only lost because of motion sickness and Erza lost because she was gimmicked by Kyria's mind control, so they never got a chance to see how powerful they really were. Gray on the other hand got to show pretty much all of his best abilities, and Skullion beat him.
Similar to Natsu's FDK techs, Gray's arsenal of devil slayer moves also have an evident difference in strength. Case in point, Invel was caught by surprise from Zeroth Long Sword, but that attack was not capable of seriously injuring him. He was, however, pummelled badly and eventually beaten with Zeroth Destruction Fist, with no chance of retaliation. And the attack Gray used to defeat and fatally wound Mard Geer with, Zeroth Destruction Bow, should also be stronger and more lethal than Zeroth Long Sword. ZLS seems to be his first go-to move when employing his devil slayer magic. And Gray chose to use that, along with Ice Make: Silver, in his first fight with Skullion. So I really don't think he went all out.

Don't get me wrong though. I do think Gray was outclassed by Skullion in that exchange, similar to how he was outclassed by Rufus in their first fight, and Invel until he revived. However, I would reserve my judgement to say Gray is weaker than Skullion, until he actually went all out. Given his track record, I won't be surprise if Gray has it in him to step up another gear and turn the tables around on Skullion, if the two were to cross paths again.

I can't really see Gray matching Natsu's FDK demolition fist, and Purgatory might be a step above Demolition Fist. That's why I say if it takes multiple FDK spells to take down Gajeel, it would put him ahead of Gray. If it just takes one, that would put him around Gray's level. If it takes anything less than that, it would put Gray ahead of Gajeel.
I beg to differ. If FDK Demolition Fist couldn't even made Madmorl flinch, I find it hard to believe Gray would get taken out by a single FDK Demolition Fist, the same attack which beat Jacob. Gray has some of the most impressive endurance and threshold for pain around. I don't regard Jacob as quite on the same level as Gray. In addition, Gray has also shown to be capable of effortlessly freezing Natsu's flames in their fight, which was hot enough to melt Gajeel's iron. It would likely take Natsu delivering a few attacks of the same intensity as FDK Purgatory to put Gray down for good.

I actually don't doubt that Gray can freeze Gajeel's body. I just don't think it would be a fight ender. Ajeel, Natsu, and Skullion can all break out of being encased in Gray's ice, so Gajeel should be capable of something similar. Gray can probably freeze Gajeel with the effects of Zero Longsword or Ice-Make: Silver, and then Gajeel will eventually break out of the ice, and then they will continue brawling.
This I can agree with. :)

Gray had a substantial power of feelings boost when he rematched Invel due to his rage at Juvia's supposed death. This is Gray near the peak of his emotional state, much like how Erza and Natsu peaked out their POF against Irene and Zeref respectively. Gray might be able to turn the tables on Skullion if he taps into that POF again, but in general I don't think Skullion was too worried about having to rematch Gray if it was a 1v1.

Madmole is a dragon slayer that focuses on having exceptional durability. I don't think Gray's durability compares to Madmole's. Madmole's durability really outclasses most characters, and Natsu had to kick it up a notch with a new spell to deal with him. I do consider Gray more durable than Jacob, but demolition fist was honestly overkill for Jacob. Jacob was already starting to burn up from the heat of FDK mode, and Demolition Fist basically oneshotted him. I don't think it would take multiple hits on the level of FDK Purgatory to take down Gray, though it may take multiple hits on the level of Demolition Fist.

While it is true that Gray can sometimes freeze Natsu's flames, and sometimes Natsu's flames can sometimes melt Gajeel's iron. It is also true that sometimes Natsu's flames can melt Gray's ice, and Gajeel won't necessarily have to melt Gray's ice to break it.

Yes because going into the sequel Gray was already stronger than Gajeel and his Alvarez feats outclass Gajeel's by quite a bit.

One off-panel high diff fight isn't going to make me put them equally
IK
I put Gray above Gajeel as well.

I'm just surprised it came from you lol

Gajeel wins. DF Gajeel isn’t losing to Gray from what we’ve seen. DF Gajeel stomped Bradman way worse than Gray stomped Invel.

^What he said. Recently went back and read these fights. Throughout Black Iron's duration, Bloodman got utterly demolished. Invel actually resisted Gray to a degree.

I voted tie back then. Now changing to Gajeel, leaning towards him more

It's fun reading back on the old posts and seeing how they aged.

Fight can go either way. Gray isn't going to win merely by insta-freezing Gajeel.

He never was going to win by flash freezing

Gajeel wins. Even with little screentime he's been more impressive. Gajeel's Loses didn't come from low tier characters. He lost to natsu, aldoron and god Serena. Gray lost to skullion and couldn't properly beat tired Mira
