Hey there, so I've decided on doing some quick low quality Edited Mangas of GTO S14D by myself for a forum that I admin while we wait for a proper team like Keishou or whoever to come out with the goods. I'm currently a Japanese student at uni and have been studying quite seriously for a couple of years, but I still can't say I trust myself enough to let what I do circulate without a disclaimer like page at the start of each release making sure that everyone's aware that my work is bound to be full of mistakes. :p

But anyway, I can generally get past the majority of text in a chapter, however every now and then I stumble over lines I just can't seem to get my head around.

Right now I'm stuck on this line:
あなたがそんな事だと片親だから躾がなってないんだって
お母さんが責められるのよ!?

From what I understand this mother is saying how since she's the only parent bringing up her daughter, if the kid acts up she'll be the one who'll be criticized? If I'm on track with that, just some phrasing help would be appreciated :)

Since I predict more lines like this coming up in the future, I think I'll just keep adding onto this thread instead of making a new one every time I get stuck.

Well, the first line is saying something along the lines of "(someone) says you're a single mother so you are not giving the proper discipline." I'm not 100% sure because I don't know who's saying it, and under what context. If it doesn't make sense, mind showing me the whole page?

Second one is "My mom is being blamed!?"

Right, sorry I should have included the page.
From what I understand it's the mother talking to her daughter, and telling her that she (herself as the mother) will be blamed. Anyway here's the page:

5th and 6th bubbles.

Oh, in that case, it's more like:
"If you act like that because I'm a single mom,"
"I'll be the one taking the blame!"

So I believe you were right.

Sweet, thanks a lot.

I'm sure I'll have some more stuff to ask so until then :P

EDIT:
Actually, with 責められる, is just plain her worrying about being blamed or is it more her worrying about being criticized as a parent? Worrying about how you are viewed in society and what people think of you seems to be a pretty big thing in Japan so I thought the later could be the case, and criticized could be a better word?

Ah man, looks like I made the edit to late haha.
Did you get all that? :P

EDIT: Actually, I've just written this:
Bubble 1: If you go doing things like this, I’m a single parent,
Bubble 2: So who do you think will get the blame for giving you a poor upbringing!?

Any thoughts?

I suppose criticize could work too, but I personally feel that it's not strong enough in the context.

And it's not that she'll get the blame because she's the only parent, it's implying more that being a single mom, she probably doesn't have the time and energy to properly educate her daughter. Does that make sense?

Ah right, however, when i put 躾 into this I get:
躾 【しつけ】 (n) (uk) home discipline; training; upbringing; breeding; (P); EP

I guess there's something in 躾がなる that I'm not getting?

Sorry, you're right. It's late for me so my brain's not all here @_@
In that case, I think the first bubble should be more like "People will say that you weren't brought up properly because I'm a single mom."
Followed by "And I'm the one getting the blame!"

Sorry for the confusion.

Ah ok, no problem :)

Here's a phone conversation that comes up. There's nothing before and there's nothing that follows this conversation so I decided it's not worth posting the page since there's no real context to understand. We have no previous knowledge as to what the mother's profession is. The mother just goes back to the phone after punishing her daughter and this is all that's said over the phone:

あ もしもし 編集長ですか?
申し訳ありません・・・・例の記事ページの件なんですけど
先方の都合でまだアポ取れてなくて
ええ 明日には必ず・・・・

And that's it, focus resumes on the daughter being sad.

obviously the first part is easy,
"Ah, Hello? Is this the Editor-In-Chief?"

"申し訳ありません・・・・" = "I'm very sorry..."
but then I'm not sure about 例の記事ページ
I thought it might mean like a mock article or something? But then it seems like 例の can mean more than "an example such and such"? Like 例の件 can translate to "the matter in question", so should the line translate to something like "I'm very sorry... Regarding the page article in question,"?

Yep, "I'm sorry...About that article page..." or something like that.

Cool thanks,

Due to other circumstances I'm yet to make an appointment (?)

Yes, tomorrow I'll most definitely... (I assume she's talking about making the appointment?)

First one, 先方 means the party she's addressing, but I'm not sure which. And it's not so much that she has yet to make one, it's more like she couldn't yet.

Does the second one come right after the first? If so, then yes.

So she's saying due to certain circumstances related to the editor-in-chief she hasn't yet been able to make an appointment? Or related to some other party? Or is it impossible to tell? :p

and yeah, the last line comes straight after.

She's probably talking about herself though :P

So due to circumstances involving herself?

Should I just say "Due to circumstances blah blah"?

Sometimes it's better to not translate word by word, because of ambiguities in Japanese.
I would personally just say "I haven't been able to make an appointment due to certain circumstances."

Cheers for the last piece of advice.

So I'm back with more questions...

Line:
"To be beaten with a hanger(??) when not behaving perfectly"?

so 2 questions, what's the deal with the ハンガー? Is it a particular type of "hanger" that I'm not thinking of? What comes to mind is a wire clothes hanger and that would be pretty dumb... Also is behaving perfectly a good translation for ちゃんとしてない?

Hm. Did anything happen before this scene that could give some clues? ハンガー could also be an airplane hanger or hunger. Or it could be something specific to this manga.

しゃんとする means to do something properly, so "We will be hit by ハンガー if we don't do it properly."

Can you show me the previous page as well?
